My child will have chores to do, but not so many that they bog her down or wear her out. She will be taught that her homework and her schooling absolutely come first, though. If she consistently forgets to do her chores, I will discuss the issue with her and take appropriate action. If she decides she wants to do volunteer work or play sports, her choreload will be reduced. If she ends up in a situation where she has so much homework that she has little time to rest, her choreload will be reduced or waived, as necessary. I will allow for "rest" time in there, no matter if she is just working on homework or if she has chores to do. I will teach her appropriate time management skills, so hopefully this will not be a problem.

I agree that asking a kid to do 1-2 chores a day isn't going to kill them or weigh them down.
My kids are HSed and they have a few regular chores:
DD12: she does the dinner dishes and her own laundry. (She was throwing clean clothes back in the dirty laundry because she didn't want to put them away or because she started throwing dirty clothes on top of the clean ones. I got tired of washing clothes I knew she hadn't worn since the last time I had washed it) SHe also changes the guinea pig's bedding and takes the trash and recycling to the curb once a week. Her job in the bathroom is the toilet
DD10: does the lunch/breakfast dishes after lunch. Helps keep the Guinea pig's food and water full. Cleans the bath tub. Gather's the trash on trash days
DS7: helps clear table, cleans bathroom sink, helps keep guinea pig's food and water full, takes the trash out to the curb once a week. (It gets collected twice a week)
They all help with keeping the common areas picked up, putting away groceries, taking their clean laundry to their rooms.
The girls are also learning to cook

i don't like the word "chore" LOL, but that's just me 
i have 3 (9, 11, and 13). we don't have a list of chores or jobs or anything else. the expectation is that if you see something needs to be done, do it. all 3 cook, do dishes, wipe down the bathroom, straighten up, mop, vacuum, or anything else that may be needed at a given moment. with the exception of laundry - that's my baby, and yardwork is my son's ;o).
some days only 1 or 2 kids do something, somedays none of them do, and somedays all of them do. it depends on the situation...and it's based on respect for the family. don't do them because "i said so," but because you repect the family and home.
again...works for us

Just the girls? Why shouldn't boys learn how to cook? Even by 7 years old, there's a lot a kid can learn how to do.
My husband and father are great cooks, even if my mother and I do most of the cooking at our respective homes.

He can use the microwave. I don't have him cooking on the stove yet. HE helps me with things like baking and bringing ingredients.
The girls can fix basic/simple dinners by themselves htough
