I'm getting ready for work right now - I have a ton to do still, and I didn't go in yesterday (worked from home). There are things I need at the office. Other than that, it's just church tonight and work - this evening (in between posting, I'm sure), I've got to finish 2 online courses, and then begin working on 2 others that are significantly longer.

Good morning Michelle! I woke up early this morning and couldn't get back to sleep, so I decided to catch up on my forums reading. I am gonna go see my mom later on today, but that is about it. I may also either dept. store shopping and/or go see a movie today also. How are you doing today?

Yes, Mike...this is the second child I've taught to drive. When GP1 was ready to drive she didn't want to learn. However, my ddh had just died, and the family needed another driver. I didn't feel competent to do it, and had very small children at the time, so I asked my bil to help with it, since he was going to be teaching his own daughter around the same time. I regret it in some ways because she's not the driver she should be...I don't really think it's my bil's fault, but I wonder if she'd be better if I had taught her. But when it came time to teach GP2, there was no one around to help, so I just had to do it myself. I bought a good curriculum, stuck to it, and today he is an exemplary driver. So I've had a little experience, now, and feel fairly confident about teaching GP3, even though she doesn't really want to learn...again, we are in the position of needing another driver for the family. Yesterday, though, we nearly sideswiped a mailbox. I'll be glad when she quits driving too far to the right. besiderself

Well Esther, if you are not a nervous driver, it should all work out well.

Best wishes with the driving, Esther! I was old enough when my younger siblings had their permits that I got in for helping them put in their hours. Don't think I was much of a teacher though! But at least they were already familiar with the idea of driving so it wasn't bad.

Hey, Sunluvin' I'll be getting a little help from GP2. I'm going to ask him to come home from college for a day or two and teach her to change a tire, and give her some experience in reaction driving (accident avoidance and all that really fun stuff where you get to do what we call "Action Hero Driving). besiderself

I wish we could do that here. In WA you have to go to an accredited driving school. Absolutely no parent-taught courses! Well, DS15, Brandon, has a swim meet this morning. They last forever, and he'll only be swimming in 3 or 4 events. But, he's a good swimmer, and they swim him in the higher age group, and I'm very proud, and so I will be there cheering on. I do actually have a sister and two cousins on the team as well, so I have four to cheer for. I think we'll try and drag my mom to the movies, as well. Woman works way too much! And they just gave her a promotion, so she is working even more now.

I don't know how to change a tire! Does she have to go through Driver's Ed? I didn't have to when I got my license but my siblings did and they felt like it really taught them some important things.

My father taught me in one afternoon - and I took my test the next morning to get my restricted. I actually began driving with my restricted (at 15) because it was necessary. Mom was always in the car with me so it looked like I had a licensed driver with me - though she's never driven a day in her life. My father and brother were living in NW Indiana at the time, so I was the only licensed driver - even at 15. It was out of necessity. I'm a natural born driver. My dad has even said as much. I began navigating for the family before I was 10. Over the years, personally, I've driven over 500,000 miles - alone. And that's not driving a truck! I've had truck drivers say I should do that - as much as I love driving. But, I'm called to do other things. Given the option, I'll drive somewhere. However, with prices they way they are now, I'll fly when I can.

In the parts of TX and NM that I have lived, there was no way to live close enough to grocery stores and doctor's offices and even work to just walk everywhere. So over the years I've just gotten used to driving everywhere. That's why it's no big deal to me to drive 2 hours one way to school...well, ok, it's a little bit of a stretch. Some people seem to think that's a hardship (and gas-price-wise it is) but just the driving...not a problem. During the semester I'm putting about 700+ miles on my car each week. Could be I'll be putting even more on this coming year...sheesh. besiderself

Oh, were I live you can't walk to anything either - especially not when I was at that age. EVERYTHING is spread out here - ask Michelle. And, our public transportation is so horrible. I've also lived to where I had a 90 minute commute - all driving - even in blizzard conditions. No biggie. I love driving. When I move to a new area - I just get out and drive and try to get myself lost (I've only ever been lost once - in NJ, on my way to a Steve Green concert). It's how I learn the areas. I'll drive 4-5 hours to a soccer game I want to see. I'll drive 4-5 hours to see Steve. I'll drive 8 hours for a weekend trip to Chicago when I lived in Nashville. I'll drive 12 hours for a weekend of soccer and shooting baseball (when I was with *him*). Driving is theraputic for me. It's my time alone with God - no interruptions. 700 miles a week sound about right. I've had a few locations to were I was running about 1000, depending on what I was doing.

Interesting, when I was in Tampa with my family, we did take Public Transportation, albiet it did take 2 connections to make it to the Science Museum though. I saw a news report this week that Boston, New York, Chicago and San Francisco are the most walkable cities in the U.S. Not so ironically, I have visited the 3 of them and of course live in the other.

I don't live in Tampa. And, if you're not right in the middle of the city there is no public transportation. It's minimal - at best.

Kinda reminds me when I tried to teach myself skating once. Everytime I pushed forward, I would go backwards instead! I dunno why I didn't think of just doing the opposite instead?
