They don't both have to be present as long as there is a legal document...either a notarized permission or Power of Attorney document stating that the other parent knows and approves.

peculiar--that's because you had POA. Actually, we are VERY glad that both parents have to sign for a passport. My sister's ex is from Switzerland. He's not even a US citizen. He could pick up and move at the drop of a hat. The kids do have passports which my sister has locked in her safe deposit box. They used to go to Switzerland all the time. Now, however, ain't no way my sister is going to let them go. Our biggest fear is that he will take the kids back with him and we'll never see them again. I've had a terrible, rotten, no good day today. Dh is out of town and ds2 is in rare form. Ds1 is ticked at ds2 and falling into ds2's games. Things slide down hill and ds3 and ds4 are getting the worst end. I told ds2 to go to his room and he informed me that I couldn't make him. He's gonna be in a world of hurt when dh gets home...

I am back. We made it to the 'burbs of Atlanta and back in 31 hours, and that included 4 hours of waiting for someone to fax 5 pieces of paper and dinner at Cracker Barrel. Jim is doing well at the moment - he looked pretty good when we picked him up and is having only occasional, mild bouts of dizziness, which is what got him to that hospital in the first place. He is following up with a cardiologist up here. God blessed him with a wonderful Christian roommate - they became good friends while he was there - so we are now praying for Bob's health as well. I got myself a new electric meat grinder tonight - I know that doesn't sound all that exciting to most of you, but we raw feed the cats and dogs and some of them need the meat ground. I was using my hand grinder, but my arm is giving out. I just did 5 pounds of chicken, pain free. Donna, if I'd known car problems were contagious I wouldn't have posted about mine. Good news on that front - Bryan has managed to resuscitate my other car. It actually turned out to be something really stupid that nonetheless effectively stopped the car from starting. Jesse was just gifted with an extra 30 minutes before he has to go to bed, simply because his brother kept telling him to go to bed. I can't seem to impress upon a couple of my teens that micromanaging their little brother is not in their job description.

that included 4 hours of waiting for someone to fax 5 pieces of paper and dinner at Cracker Barrel. You can fax dinner?! So, I went to my little sister's summer band concert. I expected it to be painful but actually, they did very well! In addition to that, and seeing her all dolled up and looking beautiful, I ran into an old friend that I haven't seen since high school. We were pretty close back then. She converted to mormonism shortly afterward, though, and I guess married a man a few years ago who was killed in the war shortly thereafter. She isn't doing so great. I have her card, though, and intend to see her sometime soon.

WOW, Cindy, that was a super quick trip! Glad you all made it back safely. Did you see any of the scenery on the way there or back? LOL Glad your Bryan resuscitated your car! Hopefully it cost less than my van's resuscitation did... Hazel, sorry about your day. Must be mine yesterday was contagious, like Cindy's car troubles. Go to bed and I hope tomorrow is much better.

Well the decision is made. We have decided to homeschool our 9 year old. She had to repeat first grade, in second grade she was in special ed and being pulled out 3 times a day and still struggling. Someone is willing to give me A Beka curriculum for third grade. My problem is I wonder if it would be better to just do unit studies on things she is really interested in. She is very hands on, has ADD, and does not like 'learning'. We had talked about butterflies and someone posted a unit study link for butterflies. I am wondering if letting her choose what to learn about would be a better approach. Any suggestions? Thanks, Amy

Amy--YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unit studies are the best! Find out what she wants to learn about. Go to the library and get books. Butterflies--learn the basics of the biology (life cycle, migration, etc), get some storybooks on butterflies. Then, possibly have her write her own story about a butterfly. BINGO--you have science, reading and writing. Since you have ABeka, you might see if you can throw in bits and pieces, but I wouldn't push it. You wnat her to learn to love learning. I just had the best ride then run. Catching my breath, then there's more yardwork to do. Dh is gonna be a bit surprised when he gets home. We have three pine trees along the fenceline. The bottom of the trees are dead/dying and look terrible. I got in there and cut out all the dead stuff. It looks sooooo much better! And, yesterday I got the last of it hauled to the curb just as the yard waste truck pulled up! But, there's still stuff that needs cleaned up. I picked a couple pints of cherries yesterday. Any clues on what to do with really tart cherries? As in so tart you can't eat them?

Sometimes kids who have had regular schooling need a time of what we call 'decompression' so that they can regain their natural love for learning. It sounds like your daughter may need this, Shakeray. So I would take 3 months or so, do nothing that is not fun and interesting, don't tell her that she is doing 'school', lol, and then re-evaluate at the end of that time. Definitely read tons of good books together, explore anything that interests her, that sort of thing--but no book work. The curriculum gift you have been given is a blessing, but it has no expiration date! And from the sounds of it, she may not be ready for third grade Abeka work anyway.

Amy, if she has struggled that much, I'd be verrrry careful with using Abeka (or Bob Jones, if that was in question). I know it's free to you from this friend, but it is a pretty advanced curriculum and coming from public school...VERY advanced. Might be better to just unit study or pull together what you can, with little sprinkles of the Abeka that you know she can handle.

Amy- if you need to pop some math into that butterfly unit I am sure that you could locate how fast butterflies fly or how far they can fly in a day and then ask questions about how long it would take for the butterfly to fly from where you live to grandma's or aunt sues, or your friend in southern cali or germany... oooh math AND geography too! we have history club today. the state organization is insisting that we divide our club up. They are shooting themselves in the foot. See they are 90% public school clubs meaning that the clubs are grade segregated elementary clubs, middle school clubs, and high school clubs. our mega club covers all ages and has near 100 on the rolls. each individual club can submit a max number of projects. by their dividing us up we will now have 3x the chances to submit/win in a couple of categories- Photography and essays. Then an additional chance to win in things like media (movie and computer programs). We swept a copuple of the categories last year. this is SO not good for them. *Shakes head* Yes, our adviser has told them about this "unfair advantage" but the lady in charge seems to think it will give all the clubs a better chance over all because they will be competing against a more narrow age group. Hmmmm, yeah, new lady in charge. Prior we were secondary(9th-12th grade) and primary groups(officially 3rd-8th grades but can include 1st and 2nd grade as associate members). what she fails to see is that the primary media (movie) our kids submitted and that won 2nd state wide in the grades 3-8(primary) was done by kids in 2nd-5th grades heavy on the 2nd- 4th grades! honestly only the camera operator was out of the new elementary grade (4th and 5th grades) level. ~ezri

ezri--almost sounds like what they did with Christians in China. When the group got too big, the government would split 'em up. Only to have more groups spring up... My guys are driving me NUTS!!! They are fighting about who gets on the computer first. Uh, guys, remember the fights the other day. And me telling you that NOONE was getting on the computer 'til Dad got home? Um hum... Their fighting is POINTLESS because NOONE is getting on the computer! Dh SHOULD be home this evening.

Donna--I also have the password!!! The "new one" shouldn't be hard to figure out, but in three years, they ahve't figured out the "new one". Ds4 was the one who figured out the old one. The user was "family", as was the password. So one day he typed in "family" and ***WALLA*** he's in. So we changed it to new one.

I have a few questions. I do not want to nag my daughter all the time. I keep reading about how kids wil learn to manage their time better, but I feel like my dd has no concept of time. How do I teach her to get her work done and not 'hover' over her all the time. My second question is how do you know how long to let them decompress. She has been out of school since May 23. I bought her a reading lamp and she is willing to read at night and that is a new accomplishment. Could that be a sign that she is decompressing? This REALLY scares me because she is already so far behind. We can't waste any more time, can we? Sorry for all the questions. I am just trying to learn as much as I can before we actually start.

I have used a timer with my eldest daughter. She probably has ADHD, but I didn't bother testing her, as I don't want her on meds. I would tell her how long she had for a lesson, then would set the timer. When the timer went off, she would go onto something else. If she had anything left to do from that lesson, we would do it after all other lessons were done and would reset the timer. I only had to reset the timer a couple of times. Having a timer that she could see helped her tremendously in learning to understand how long something is, what is expected of her and to let her see how much time was going by. It helped her to focus much better. This is one of the best things that I ever did to help her learn this concept. She really appreciated it. My son, otoh, absolutely hates being timed. I don't think I used a timer with my middle daughter, except for piano practice time. She didn't have a problem with focus.

Brandon had his appointment with the neurologist today. Max hasn't changed a bit since the last time I saw him, and Brandon really liked him. The interesting thing he noticed was that Brandon's hands don't actually shake - each finger jitters independently of the others. He said that's actually pretty rare, pointed out that of course my kid would have something weird , and said that something is misfiring somewhere. He wants Brandon to have an EMG and then an MRI. The EMG comes first because it will tell him where to look on the MRI. He didn't sound worried at this point. I need to get the EMG scheduled - not only does he want the test, but he wants a particular tech to do it - and then we will go from there. Ez, it does sound like they're shooting themselves in the foot. I wonder how long it'll take them to scramble around and try to combine the groups again. Shakeray, a timer might be a good idea. Remember, though, that your daughter is only 9! She is not going to college tomorrow. You've got plenty of time to teach time management, so don't stress over it. I would agree that from the sound of it she would probably do much better with unit studies than with ABeka. If she's willing to read again, she is beginning to decompress. Try to relax. She will learn a ton just by reading. I have always done interest-led education and my kids are all doing fine. His, cherry pie sounds good to me - but if your guys are fighting, maybe they don't need to eat any?
