What about breaking up the job into smaller pieces.
Take one box....clean them....photograph them....enter on ebay....sell...ship. Then start on another box. That way your efforts are paying off as you go instead of doing ALL the work up front.
Once people realize what you have some toy collector MIGHT offer to purchase the lot. Have you researched toy collectors ? Have any idea what the total lot is worth ?
Have you followed on Ebay what is selling ? Is there a clean vs as is condition ?
Sounds like you could become a power seller on Ebay with the amount you have.
As to cleaning....find a mild detergent....some probably could be washed in dishwasher or bathtub.
I know re finishing furniture is a no no & will devalue the piece if it is really old.

I haven't....but most of the toys we have are solid colored toys (legos, etc) where the color is in the plastic, not painted on top of it.

LOL...if I could you know I would be there. I wouldn't even have to convince hubby...at least once he week he brings up the whole "I wish we lived in PF/Sev again" or the "I miss Dollywood" discussion...lol. Too bad there isn't an Army post there.

. . . Well, I've just spent the past 1.75 hours going through 1.5 boxes.
I decided to test some toys in warm water with Dawn dish soap.
So far, so good; nothing's been damaged . . . Although, some of the grime requires something else other than a soaking . . . so I've been using a paper towel sprayed with Goo Gone on those buggers.
The vast majority of the figurines that I've tested have been "soft plastic" . . . so I'm guessing that this method won't hurt the hard plastic figurines neither.
Jackie, I had originally thought of doing it like you suggested . . . a box at a time; but I decided that I really need to have all the toys cleaned and photograph before I put any of them on eBay. One of the reasons why is that if a toy collector does contact me, I want to be able to have my entire inventory available for viewing, at the same time. The other reason is that in addition to the eBay auctions, I am also planning on doing an eBay store in conjunction with the auction . . . again, having the complete inventory for viewing at one time would be more beneficial, I believe . . . both for my customers and also for me.

If it's just dust, and not in with grease I'd hook up a air hose to the air compressor, and blow away. As I have worked with collectibles the older soft plastic, painted items I'd stay with a soft cloth, and mild detergent like dish soap - even that may take off the paint - if that is happening stop and just take a feather duster. Since you're selling a couple of suggestions 1.) Sell as you go. You may clean them all and then they'll be dirty all over again. 2.) You may consider selling in bulk - clean or not find buyers at Mister Find IT And by selling as you go, you'll know what you have, and it won't seem so over whelming - inch by inch anything is a sinch.
