ORIGINAL: OneOfHisJewels Well, we had the party, and it was pretty nice. I didn't feel too out of place, but I did get my feelings hurt. I was talking to this couple that are always really nice to me, and are hispanic. The husband works outside alot, and he was showing me how tan he was getting on his legs (I know that sounds bad in print, but it wasn't, he was wearing shorts, and his wife was right there), and I said even his not tan ankle was darker than my skin. And I thought they were just going to chuckle, or say, not to worry, and point out some attractive feature I DID have (I do have some, even if I am miss paleness), and the wife said, "Yeah, look at your leg,it's as white as the chair." Yes, I was sitting in a white chair. I was really really hurt. And I wasn't wearing shorts, just capri pants. How inappropriate! I would have the hardest time not shooting back some tactfully yet nasty remark (assuming I could think up one quickly). You know what, to some culture, being dark is negative. In my old country, if you're darker, you are considered extremely unattractive. If you had told that to someone, about the tan compliment, they'd take it as an insult and they'd automatically insult you back. That's probably what happened with the people in your church. However, in my culture, you can openly say that someone is fat in front of them, and they'd just laugh at it. For our holidays her in Canada, which was Canada day on July 1. I slept in. then I and a couple of people that I work with visited this lady that caused a major traffic accident (killing 2 people). She was new at driving and got confused. she was very distraught and needed company. Then we were going to see the fireworks but I had to work the following day so I stayed in with my kid..

ORIGINAL: Tinkerbell_ I have a sense of humour about a lot of things but those I don't I nip in the bug quite quickly. *ahem* Respectfully, it is nip it in the bud. There shall be no nipping of bugs on my watch. My apologies. *bows deeply* However, at my house, the boys and I are serial killers of bugs so you may not wish to visit when it's hot and humid out. Now I see a new thread in M&E about that.

BTW, my comment was meant towards this particular comment instead: quote:

That's how it is in Mexico(I know, I've been there), but the Hispanics in THIS TOWN, that were born and raised HERE are actually pretty proud of their olive skin because they know the rest of us like it. And they were born and raised here. But I'm over it, really. I made the mistake of making that post right after I came home and it was fresh on my mind. Once an extra day went by I realized it was not a big deal.

ORIGINAL: KuKu When I read that explanation, that 's what I thought of too... When I taught (hispanics), we actually had to suspend a student for his remarks about how 'second class' and 'dirty' his darker classmates were... and, being a minority in a 'lighter' group, they may have felt 'called out' about it- or pointed out that you were right, you are definately lighter than they are... Well, HE brought it up, and he seemed PLEASED with himself about being able to tan so well. Instead of saying more, I will just say, see above post.

Just got back from camping this weekend and I just had to come to CW to catch up. Yes, I'm probably addicted (lol). I always seem to forget just how hard the ground is insisde the tent and I woke up feeling like I got hit with a Mac Truck. Time to add a nice cot or air mattress to the list of things to purchase before camping again. Needless to say, I didn't sleep very well as I tossed and turned but I had a great time with our ministry.

Isn't it nice to wake up outside, in the woods, with fresh air, and the birds singing to you? I went camping last weekend too and I woke up with this bird singing such a melodious tune and I thought i could wake up to that every morning. And it wasn't just chirping; it was literally singing. I'm gonna go back camping again maybe next week just to find out what bird that was.

I'm gonna go back camping again maybe next week just to find out what bird that was. Now that was the part that made it all worthwhile. There's something about the way birds sing that makes you wonder if they are actually praising God. Most of the time, I am awakened in the early morning by birds singing outside my window and it is the most beautiful sound to wake up to. Once in a while, I'll get one of the more annoying birds but I take it in stride (lol). I'll try to go camping at least three times a year. My friends have been trying to get me into hiking and I just may bite. They've been training to do Mt. Whitney this summer and the put in 22-mile hike the other day. Needless to say, I'm not that into it although I can see myself doing some of the smaller local mountains in the area. quote:
*ahem* Respectfully, it is Mack Truck. I may be Mac, but I would never hit anyone with my truck... on purpose. Figured I'd take a gamble on the spelling but there's no pulling any punches with this crowd (lol).
