I know how to cast off, but I don't know how to decrease or increase the number of stitches.

I'll stick to knitting scarves. I know how to do those.

One very simple way to decrease is pulling the yarn through two stitches instead of one (works for both knit and purl). Behold! You now know how to decrease.

For the other 99 ways to increase and decrease check here and here.

Be brave and venture out into the not so rectangular knitting. It's fun!

christsstar -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (1/23/2009 9:11:50 PM)

Decreasing is easy Trish ... just put two stitches on your right hand needle. Increasing is a little more tricky, but not that bad. You kind of knit twice on one stitch. I have a hard time with it because my stitch tension is so tight. I'm working on that.

How to Increase

How to Decrease

Thanks for the help.

http://www.cometosilver.com/socks/SockClass_Start.htm

I've found this site to be helpful for socks. i made the mistake though of thinking that you had to get all the stitches back onto one needle..haha so it's back to stitch one for me!

seems like i get it now..hopefully

good luck all!

Random tip of the day:

My cast on would always be too tight compared to the rest of the work especially when I started to knit socks and gloves. Using two double pointed knitting needles together instead of one to cast on solves that problem. Don't worry if the first round or row looks extremely loose. The gauge will work out perfect.

Hi christsstar,

You could try the "make one towards/make one away" method to increase. It doesn't matter how tight your gauge is because you don't need to go through the stitch again.

christsstar -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (1/25/2009 10:53:28 AM)

Thanks Anoc. I like both of those suggestions.

How are projects going for everyone?

I have been working on the project for the church. Last night I made a mistake and this morning had to rip out an hour's worth of work. Hopefully I won't repeat the mistake--once it took me 3 days to finish one row on a table cloth--because I had made errors on earlier rows and had to rip out 3-6 rows and start over 3 times--working with thread on a table cloth.

I bought a bunch more yarn for sweaters...still haven't finished even one (it is started...but I'm not sure what I did with the pattern).

My next priority will have to be sewing a western shirt for my son. He will need it for an upcoming horse show (April). He had his first riding lesson with his horse (now in training) on Saturday. The trainer wants my son to ride in a show before the big one to make sure his clothes, etc. are all in order for the big show, so I've got about a month. I hope one of my sewing machines works....

rebakablam,
Have you tried socks yet?

cherish405,
have you how is your practice with increasing and decreasing?

rebakahblam -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/8/2009 6:14:42 PM)

creationtalk: oh boy i did try socks. i taught myself how to knit in the round using 3 dpns.. everything was wonderful, until i had to turn the heel..that didn't go so well. so i reserved myself to something simpler. i'm currently knitting a clutch (i taught myself how to make button holes! [:D]). I might try felting it after I sew the seems up, who knows.

I bought a pair of circular needles last night and um that's not going so well. I think i might have gotten ones that are too big (circumference wise).

i really really really want to learn how to crochet a hexagon afghan [http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hexagon-blanket].. but i dunno if that will happen.

anyone on ravelry.com here?
-reba.

cherish405 -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/8/2009 6:22:20 PM)

I haven't been doing any knitting lately. It's been over 100F and the temperatures keep rising. I'll get back to it when the temperatures cool down again.

christsstar -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/8/2009 7:23:12 PM)

I'm slowly working on knitting a hat. I get bored with it after about 20 minutes though, so it's a slow process. And since I'm already a slow knitter, you can imagine I'm not making a whole lot of progress.

You're not near any of the fires, I hope?

cherish405 -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/8/2009 7:35:02 PM)

The ones you are referring to are on the other side of the country from me, however, our state has been having fires too. Somebody's been starting fires in bush about 15 minutes drive north of us.

Miss Giggles -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/8/2009 9:33:10 PM)

You have to be invited to be on ravelry.com.

rebakahblam -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/8/2009 10:22:03 PM)

you can request an invite on ravelry.. i got mine after like 4 days...

it's a fun site though..if i can figure out how to i'd be willing to send an invite to people [:D]

cherish405 -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/9/2009 9:22:30 AM)

What's the site about?

rebakahblam -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/9/2009 9:44:35 AM)

it's a site for crocheters and knitters. you can upload what projects you are workign on, but i use it to download patterns..not all of the patterns are free but most are. they also have a forum which can be quite helpful.

Miss Giggles -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/9/2009 10:44:12 AM)

Well if I get some more projects done I'll try to get an invite.

Anoc -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/9/2009 3:44:59 PM)

You just have to leave your email address at www.ravelry.com and will receive an invite to join after a few days. You don't need to have any projects to upload.

Miss Giggles -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (2/9/2009 4:00:44 PM)

Ok. I just meant that I get all gung ho with certain kinds of crafts and then I start something else.. LOL

Has anyone here done any felting? How much does wool knitted stuff shrink when it's washed (aka How much bigger than i want it do I need to make something that will be felted)? Does felted knitting curl the way regular knitting does?

I just bought my son a whole bunch of stuff in preparation for a big nationals qualifying horseshow this spring and would like to make a saddle blanket to match the shirt...and figure something felted might work best (primarily because using the knitting machine is faster than crochet...and because regular knit and crochet stretch more than might be desired).

Yes, I've had a go, both with knitted items and with wool rovings. A handmade saddle blanket colour coordinated with your son's outfit sounds ace! Having a top loading washing machine helps with felting because you can stop and check the blanket regularly. Doing felting by hand takes some time and elbow grease but gives you more control over the final size and how evenly felted the item is. It also includes the fun bit of picking up the wet blanket and hurling it against a hard surface with all your strength several times. The shock of that makes the fibres contract very suddenly and tightly. Great to let off some steam [;)].

There are guidelines how much a knitted item should shrink but natural fibres are always a bit unpredictable. It also depends on how much room the yarn gets to change its shape and structure. Loosely knitted items felt better. If you felt a test swatch first and compare measurements before and after you should be able to work out what size the original knitted blanket needs to be. As long as the blanket is still wet you will be able to stretch it a bit. It will end up in whatever shape it dries, so if you lay it flat and pin the edges down there will be no curling whatsoever. Actually, a woollen saddle blanket should get some additional felting with use because of the friction of riding and the natural warmth and moisture of both horse and rider [sm=icon_smile_shy.gif].

How are projects coming?

The big project I am working on for the church is now in the most difficult stage--the words. However, so far it looks pretty good. I'm hoping to have it finished by this summer.

I haven't yet started on the saddle blanket project. Haven't got the knitting machines back together yet. I have a little less than one month...I do have the yarn to test a gauge swatch.

cherish405 -> RE: Knitting and Crocheting (3/13/2009 9:50:26 PM)

I've finally started on my scarf project. I can't always do it as my hands swell, and I also have fibromyalgia. When that's not bugging me though, at least I've made a start on the scarves, even if I'm sitting in the air conditioning whilst I'm doing it.
