The all red scarves sound nice. Certainly wouldn't need them for our Christmas though. Temperatures are usually up around the 100+ mark, so we don't need anything else to keep us warm. We'd all be passing out!

these weren't warm scarves. They were more the decorative type--skinny and fuzzy....though I understand what you mean.

The scarves that I'm making are extremely warm. I made myself one years ago, and wore it to a friend's funeral. By about a quarter of the way through the service, I had to take it off as I was so hot.

Well, all my yarn and knitting supplies are unpacked from the move but I haven't touched them yet. I need to get on that, know a few people having babies so I'll have to make some 5-hr baby sweaters. Though I'll probably make them poncho style, they go fast.

33 down. The chaplain that I'm giving them to was going to come over on Thursday, and I started freaking out as I haven't got them all done yet. Instead she's coming over in a few weeks. Hopefully by then, I'll have them all done. I've got some more to do as gifts, but I don't have to rush through those.

Cherish,
sounds like you have been busy.

I finished the angels for the volunteer group last Thursday--the group left last Saturday. I found out that they will be back again in October. I'd like to make something for them for that time as well...so far I've made cross bookmarks/ornaments from thread and angel ornaments (I wanted to post a picture of one as my avatar, but even after decimating it to the point it was barely identifiable it was still too big (all of 10.5 kb). Anyone have ideas for other Christian themed small items that I could make for October? crochet is the preferred method.

Thanks.

Yes, I have been busy. Number 39 has been started, so I'm really looking forward to the end of all the scarves now. Got some more still to go, but hopefully that won't take too long.

pruned,
Have you had a chance to start on the baby blanket for your friend?

No, my friend, the grandmother, has made two, so I decided to wait.

I'm going through my yarn and have skeins and skeins of that one left over skein from the project it was used on. I've poured over my crochet books, but I don't see anything that I could make that uses a variety of skeins for one project. I have enough for an afghan, for example, but the colors will be random samples. The books I have generally show compatible colors kind of woven into each other like: dark blue/light blue then a basic neutral stripe rose/pink, basic neutral stripe, goldenrod/yellow, basic neutral stripe, brown/tan, basic neutral stripe, etc. ...

Anyway, I don't have enough of the compatible colors to work together to make these patterns work. Do you gals have any ideas for a scrap afghan?Any other projects that take one 8 oz skein of worsted?

I would very much like to use the yarn I have, reducing my inventory. It literally fills a clothing hamper. These are the basically unused skeins. Plus there's the leftover half-used skeins, although I do have a some ideas for those.

Thank you one and all!

Hi pruned,

A clothing hamper full of yarn?!?!? I want it! Send it to meeeee!!!! *pant pant*
[Bad girl. You're supposed to help pruned, not be greedy.]

Ahem...

Just be daring and throw crazy colour combinations together! When I went to Ravelry and put "scrap" into the search engine it came up with pages and pages of free patterns for afghans, scarves, hats, bags, potholders.... You might find something there, or you could simply adapt a pattern you've already got and use more adventurous colours. Even if your leftover bits are tiny you can still turn them into something.

I think "granny squares" were just invented to use up scrap yarn

And I have seen very pretty afghans made with scrap yarn and a chevron (or variation of a chevron) stripe.

Make baby blankets and potholders. Or little booties and hats if you have the skill.

They don't use a lot of yarn and you can donate them to charities like Project Linus (although if you donate them to a hospital you'll need to check and make sure - they only accept certain fabrics and yarn)

I made one afghan that had a neutral base color than diamonds of other colors all through it. I used up lots of "extra" yarn that way. I used almost every color and/or ombre yarn that I had.

I've made several projects using scrap yarn and granny squares (PS103 is right--grannies work great for extra yarn)-- a beautiful lap robe for an elderly relative from granny squares made of scrap yarn--every time I'd finish a project, I would use all the left-over yarn to make granny squares--small only 3 rnds--finished size of granny square around 4" across (still have a few left). If there wasn't enough yarn for a whole square, I would either work it in rounds or half squares with two or more colors. A baby blanket from left over pastel yarns (had to buy a couple of skeins for the last few rows). I recently made a baby blanket for xsd using single crochet squares made by her great grandmother and yarn I inherited from her grandmother (both passed away). Plan to make one from the remaining squares for xss when he and his wife have a baby. My son has asked for one as well, but for his I will have to use squares I've made--and a few my mother made years ago--as well.

ripple afghans are also beautiful in scrap yarns. If you use one color that you have a lot of as the base color (use it all the way through or at least on the ends to balance everything), the rest of the colors can be random and it will look great. I regularly increase the number of colors used in an afghan or other project to keep from having to buy yarn when I've got a lot sitting around but not enough to for the project as written.

Patchwork afghans look great with scrap yarn--work in strips of varying widths, crochet with different colors different lengths, then stitch or crochet them together.

I will say...your yarn collection sounds kind of anemic -- you'be only a hamper of extra yarn? You have a long way to go before you get a decent collection of yarn started. My attic is full of yarn. My bedroom closet is full of yarn. The corner of my room is full of yarn, plus there are several hampers full of yarn scattered about the room and house...the closet in my office is full of finished projects and some craft materials.... There is some yarn still out in the storage shed that came out of a building destroyed by Katrina...

I was down to only a 50 gallon drum of yarn when I inherited xmil's yarn. Then I started buying yarn...and buying yarn...and...

LOL!

Yes, well, there are a few other skeins tucked here and there, but not nearly as much as you have! A few years ago, I bought some yarn at a yard sale. It appeared these were the end pieces from a yarn mill not far from the home. From that, I've made 3 or 4 afghans, a dozen scarves and more.

I have also used this and my own left over partial skeins to make granny squares and then made lap robes for the nursing home. The last time I did this, I gave the nursing home 10 lap robes. I am planning to make an aghan or more for the children's home annual auction from these unused skeins.

Right now, I am using the smallest left over balls, the true scraps, and making yo-yos...basically the first round of a granny square. You only need 930 I think the pattern said, and then you link them together in the spaces with a neutral color (black), and edge in black.

That's what I was trying to think of when I said "chevron variations"

I'm getting old....

Well, one of the school chaplains that I know came over today. I gave her 42 scarves. I finished another one after she left and I still have another 5 to make her and I'm finished with the ones for the schools.

I'm making some for gifts. One for my rehabilitation physiologist, and a friend wants to buy one of mine as part of a gift for somebody. I've already done one for another friend who wants to buy a scarf.

I've got some to make that are headed over to the UK to penpals and friends. They'll be for Christmas, so I don't need to rush into those.

Hey... I'm about to meet the manager of an arts and crafts centre nearby. They may be interested in selling my knitting in their shop. I'd love to supply them and the extra money would be very welcome. I'll keep you posted.

I've mainly got socks and handwarmers/fingerless mitts. I prefer yarn that has been hand-dyed (eBay is a great source of gorgeous stuff!). Because hand-dying never comes out the same from one time to the next a particular colour is only available in small quantities, therefore I need to keep my projects small as well. I don't mind, I love their uniqueness, and it might even be an extra selling point.

Anoc,

Congratulations! That's great. You are also smart to keep the items small. I've found that you are much more likely to get a reasonable return on your time if you make small items to sell.

There is a crafts store here in Texas called 'JoAnnes'. They not only sell yarn but the one here in Dallas has classes to teach people how to knit, crochet, make jewelry and the like. Something to look into in your neck of the woods. I knit scarves and hats. I knit baby hats for the american red cross and they donate them to local hospitals for newborn babies. Love it! Keeps me entertained while I'm watching T.V. And Bambi, it's not just for old people!

JoAnne's sounds like a great craft store. I wish we had craft stores like that who would teach people to knit and crochet.

poppin' back in here after a spell...

still frustrated in not being able to knit anything besides scarves..

even more frustrated in crochet land.

i can't seem to get it. i have no problem making a chain and no problem the first row...but the second row is where it stops

where on earth do i put my hook in and why does it still feel so awkward holding the hook and yarn?

any tips for a knitter trying to convert? i think maybe if i can figure out how to hold it and figure out where to put the hook it'll come along nicely..but alas, it evades me.

the reason for my switch? why my dream of course: http://attic24.typepad.com/weblog/2008/11/hexagon-crochet.html

i want to crochet a hexagon blanket..siiigh. i guess i'll keep watching videos and videos and videos and trying different ways to hold the yarn so it doesn't feel so convoluted.

I honestly think the best way to learn is to sit with an experienced knitter/crocheter and let them watch you stitch by stitch. If you're like me and don't have a JoAnne's nearby, ask around at your church to see who is skilled at the crafts and ask to spend an afternoon with them. You're likely to make a friend as well as learning your craft!
