I've tried right after feeding and an hour after feeding. I usually just sit there and watch tv. I just sit there, put the thing to my breast, and let it suck.

Is there a time during the day when you seem to be the fullest? I know for me that the morning was when my breast seemed to be the fullest. How long do you let the pump go before stopping? I know for me it could take 5-10 minutes before I would have a letdown and milk start coming with pumping.

That is a hard decision. Is there anyway your MIL can bring Jadon to you during your break, if you get one and let you nurse him?

I pump 20-30 minutes with just drops. I figure it's because i only produce what Jadon needs. I want to go back, but Jason seems to ahve put his foot down. He thinks it's pointless to upset the household for a week. He says we don't need the money. And, I'm worried that even if I say "yes" and do my hardest to pump till Monday that I still won't produce enough. I'm surprised how much I want to say Yes. I think it's partly due to guilt. I was put on bedrest suddenly and never got to train or say goodbye to people like I wanted.

Why don't you just have your MIL bring Jadon to you when it's time to nurse? It will take just as long as pumping and will alleviate the stress.

It may just be one of those times when you have to put Jadon's needs before your own. I have had to give up several things I wanted to do because Hunter's needs were more important at the time. It is hard when you are nursing in that sense sometimes, well worth it though.

Have you taken Jadon up to your work to just visit and show him off? That might help with the guilt you feel and I am sure that would be fun to see everyone again.

Janine for me to pump it has to be early morning about 30 minutes after a feed. I have to sit there and watch the pump work and think about Isabel and how much I love her and want to nourish her. It takes a few minutes sometimes but the mental imagery helps to get things flowing.

I agree with chelle, you may just have to say no and respect jason and jadons needs right now :) they both need you to stay home.

....I am not sure about the whole back to work thing...if your husband is pretty set against it...to me that is your answer.

BUT as for pumping.....you might try pumping one side while Jadon nurses on the other side for one or two feedings a day.

My cousin had to do it that way when she was still working as a nurse with her second child.....

I guess that depends on why he was against it . Whether he was against Janine going back to work period, or whether he was against her putting herself (and him!) in a potentially anxious and stressful situation regarding pumping (ie it might be a totally different kettle of fish if she was to decide on something whereby that stress would be avoided).

Manda - You summed up his reservations perfectly. I ended up not doing it due to the stress it was going to cause to make it work. (I.e. only one vehicle and pumping.)

Question: How do you know when your milk is drying up? Or, if it's not enough for your child? Jadon feeds about 5 minutes on my left side and then about 6-8 minutes on my right per feeding. He acts like he's still hungry (i.e. rooting), but refuses to feed or nurse on my breast. After a while he stops rooting once he's no longer laying down and seems content most of the time after eating that little bit, but gets hungry faster than what he used to a few weeks ago. And, he used to sleep 6-7 hours at night, but now it's 3-4 and wakes up hungry because he doesn't eat like he used to thus needs more frequent feedings. Is this normal? He's 4.5 months old.

(I'm not freaking out or anything. I'm just trying to find out if this is normal or something I should look at. I pumped last week and my supply increased. He ate a little bit more when the supply increased, but then he just kept eating a little bit and now my supply is low again.)

He's probably having another growth spurt. Pumping will falsely increase your supply, so when you stop pumping of course it will drop again because you aren't getting that extra stimulation.

As long as he is having enough diapers, and growing and developing then your supply is most likely fine.

I knew my supply would go down. I increased it thinking maybe he wanted more, but wasn't wanting to put the energy in (sucking) to make it increase. I thought he would keep the increase up when he realized he could eat more. I am looking on google to see what the normal count of pee diapers should be.

Edit: They say six is normal. I think he has that. But, they also say strong urine smell is a sign of dehydration. He has had stronger pee smelling diapers lately. Although, "I" think they are stronger smelling. I wonder if they really 'are'.

When is your next WIC appointment? Really, as long as he is gaining weight then your supply is fine... I have never really worried about the odor of urine because I know mine can still smell strong even when I'm drinking plenty of water. Odor can be effected by lots of things including what we eat.

I know you're not in a panic about it and am not reading it as such.

Jadon sounds totally normal to me. Sometimes I just think it's hot/tiring in the summer for them, even if they're in air conditioning some of the day. I don't know. I don't eat as much in the summer months. I'd just keep a watch on his personality for negative shifts or his body language like arching his back. If he seems the same, he maybe is just not that hungry when he's feeding but is hungry more often.

I know the other day Adam woke me up at 5:18 ready to eat. I was bummed out because he gave up that 5 a.m. feeding weeks and weeks ago and had moved to more like 7 or 8 a.m. feedings each day. I had gone to bed at 2:07 (yes, I know the exact time -- I was working on some stuff in my house) so I was really tired when 5:18 rolled around and I had a hungry baby.

Lucky for me it was a one-off. He slept till 7:30 the next morning so it was just a fluke. Whew!

Remember also that sleep patterns change constantly. Gabby slept through the night(8-10 hours) from 8 weeks-4.5/5 months when she decided that she preferred to wake up a couple times a night. It stinks, but you just go with the flow.

Of course you go with the flow. I always feed on demand so I sure did get up and feed him at 5:18 in the morning. Then I promptly took him back to bed with me so I could get more sleep! [8D]

But it really was a one-off. He did it that one day. I don't consider one day a pattern. (if you were talking to me, which maybe you weren't and you were talking to Jae)

He's like his mom and dad: he likes his sleep! [;)]

Nope, I don't consider one day a pattern either. I was just pretty much throwing a reminder out there that just because they sleep through the night now doesn't mean they will ALWAYS sleep through the night. [sm=icon_smile_roll.gif] Somebody should just tell those darn babies that their Mommas need sleep[:D] But the lack of sleep is SO worth it, I would do it every night just to see Gabby's smiling face in the morning.

Oh, I don't take anything as a given with a baby -- going down easy for the night, short feedings, I heart bathtime. Babies are fickle, and they keep you on your toes.

Jae, another thing to reassure you is him having yellow pee and not dark pee. You can also squeeze the fat on his arm and if it goes back quick, he's fine and if goes back slow like memory foam, he's dehydrated. Sunken in eyes too is another sign of dehydration.

I don't know what to do. Tonight I am stressed.

Jadon is acting so hungry. He keeps rooting and wont' stop crying, but when I put him on my breast he sucks for a moment and then turns away. He's refusing my breast. It's been building and building like this until tonight where he's eaten smaller and smaller amounts to the point that now he will suck on everything but my breast. I don't know what this means. I do not feel a let down at all. Is it because I'm drying out? Is it a phase? I don't know who to ask or how to figure this out. I have a doctors appointment at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon with his doc and I plan on asking him, but I don't even know if he'll know the answers.

I don't have the answers but if he is happy (?) to suck on something else, can you let him gnaw on your arm or finger or the MAM or the corner of a blanket? I know Adam likes to "gnaw" on stuff. Adam's gums aren't red so I don't think Adam is teething right now, but could Jadon be starting to teeth? I'm sure the ladies here could give you better advice than I can about teething signs to look for.

I hope you find an answer SOON and have a good night. ((((little Jadon)))) Poor little guy. I'm sure it does leave you stressed, Jae. They're sometimes such a mystery, aren't they.

The research I've done so far says he may be on a 'nursing strike'??? I'm stressed. His daddy is holding him as he screams while I try to figure out what to do. I've seen this coming - I just don't know if this is a strike or my lack of milk. He just won't suck. He refuses my breast.
