Timmy did the same thing at Jadon's age...it was almost as if my milk wouldn't come out fast enough, and he was mad about it. He wouldn't suck long enough. I never did figure it out, and I eventually freaked out and started giving him formula, and slowly but surely my supply decreased because of the formula and he stopped nursing completely at 7 months. I don't wanna freak you out, but maybe some ladies might have advice for you. I knew if I could keep him on there longer my supply would increase with him, but I couldn't keep him latched on for very long. You can't MAKE a baby stay on your breast to suck longer, KWIM?

Awww, your poor family right now...will he suck on anything? Does he think it's bedtime? I know with Adam (not saying our kids are the same kid but at this point you probably will try anything, huh?)...if he thinks it's too dark in a room when I bring him in there he gets a little bugged like "Hey, are you trying to make me go to sleep?" but if I go in that same room and flip even a small light on (say a closet light) that makes a difference for him than being in a dark room when he's still wide awake. That's probably not helpful at all. I'm sorry. I wish I could come snuggle with Jadon and send you and Jason out for some ice cream or to get coffees at an outdoor cafe'. Does he like to sing along to music, or does music distract him? My husband has a friend who was in a band a few years ago (kind of a hillbilly band, I think) but Adam LOVES that CD -- so I just put that on and bounce along to it. Such a dork, I know, but the kid likes it and music *does* distract him when he's fussy so it works here in our household. I'm sure you know all of Jadon's tricks and me listing stuff off doesn't HELP you. I'm sorry I can't be there to help you out and just send you out for a while to stare into your husband's eyes and just not think about the little one for a minute. It wouldn't even bother me if he fussed because it would just be so nice to help you in person, you know? Poor little man. Something is bugging him, huh? I hope he drops to sleep soon or he realizes his nursing strike is only hurting himself and caves in. Would it help if you walked around without your shirt on while holding him? I know, another WEIRD suggestion but maybe he needs some skin-to-skin time with his mama? (((((JAE))))) Jeanie

I couldn't remember when it was okay to give a baby water.....so in my research I found it was 6 months. I'm not sure if that's universal or not. One thing I've been thinking about a lot lately due to Donna's situation with Brian (this is a good thing that has come out of that) ... it got me thinking "What if something happened and I couldn't be here or couldn't nurse for a while? What's our back-up plan?" We didn't really have one, so I talked to my husband about it. It was a short conversation but we decided if the baby had to go on formula for the short term (or even long-term if that's what it required), then that's what we would do. He knows not to get the stuff with too much iron in it. (My nephews have all struggled with that.) Anyhow, I'm wondering if anyone here knows if it would be okay to give Jadon some water? He is going to be 20 weeks old on Wednesday, right? I know it's not quite 5 months, but maybe someone could speak to that? (If he would even take it?) Do you think he would take it?

I wouldn't give him water, but our pediatrician has said specifically that babies are not to have water before 6 months unless it's "medically indicated" and/or cleared by a physician. Janine, if you really think your supply is dipping then there are TONS of things you can try. Oatmeal is probably the most readily available, but you can also make a tincture by boiling fennel seeds. I am not a huge fan of fennel, but most people have it in their spice cabinet and it will work quickly.

Jae, How is Jadon doing today? How did it go last night -- did he end up calling it quits on his nursing strike? I was praying for you two! Jeanie

Oh good Jae! Yeah, I didn't really wanna say what I said because it was a long hard road of heartbreak. What exactly did you do to get him to nurse longer?

on the wii w/ jadon sleeping on me so bar w/ me.... I undressed him to only a diaper so we could touch skin 2 skin. Then i pumped w/ a higher suck until let down & then fed him laying down in a quiet peaceful room. I think its partly my fault. I normally just 'do it' while watching tv so my brain wasn't in it & maybe he felt that lazy connection.

Jae do you mean you nurse while watching tv or pump? I have had to turn the tv off lately and really just stare at her face and talk to her. It's made a huge difference in our sessions. And I too have undressed her when she's gotten stressed and nursed skin to skin. All her feedings in the evening are that way. We get all snuggly on the couch or in bed and have quiet time and dad comes in too. maybe not all her feedings, but most are done that way now adays. little hard with my mom visiting but going well. Glad to hear you guys are doing better. How do you feel about this tea? I have a TON and could send you some to try if you think your supply is getting low. I will say I made one batch up and it was like being engorged all over again!!! no more for me right now!!! but it may boost you a bit. think about it and let me know.

I fed him in front of the tv for all his feedings so that I would have something to do. I think it distracted me and aided in my feeding issue with Jadon. I didn't realize that I was missing out on a connection with Jadon. I changed that routine drastically once I realized the issue last night. I realized it when I got to thinking about your advice to think about Jaodn when I pumped. I realized I didn't even do that when he ate. I thought the parrellel may work both ways, kwim?

Thank You, Chelsea. I really appreciate you complimenting me like that. I feel bad realizing how I contributed to the problem. Today he has just been nursing and nursing with me as we lay down. It's such a relief to hear him swallow and to have him nurse longer than 2-3 minutes.. I am praying this continues. I am very excited to see the doctor today. I have lots of questions for him. I hope he has weight gain. That and I'm praying that the shots go smoothly like last time.

It's odd that he only nurses really well if we are laying down together.

posting blind sorry... baby question.....but first I need to let you know that I *TRIED* with all my heart.....my little man latched on perfect but he would fall asleep ALL the time.. no matter what I did!.. he was butt naked with the a/c on and still fell asleep... I went for like 10 days with no sleep and him on my boob ALL DAY.. literally 15 min break if that! then his doctor suggested I pump and allow my husband to feed him so I can sleep a bit ..since I was getting really stressed out and he felt that baby was being exhausted and not satisfied... so I did that.... my milk came in like on the 8th day so its still fairly new.... I am not sure if my milk supply will be enough or not... I have supplemented with formula...and still pump.... I have enough for him all through the day.. we use like a bottle or 2 of formula. my issue is i havent got breast milk stock! i go back to work in September and was hoping to do as well as i did with my first (he was exclusively bf till 4 months even though i went back to work after 6 weeks. what can i do this time? and do you think mixing bm and formula is bad for baby?

ORIGINAL: TheEgyptianPrincess and do you think mixing bm and formula is bad for baby? Not sure about your other questions, but I do know that it's OK to mix the two. Make the formula like normal, then add the breastmilk, then you can heat it up in hot water. Or, you can use scalding hot water to make the formula and then add the cold breastmilk, and it may come out a good temp for baby. What ever you do, do not add the powder straight to the breastmilk with no water, it's too much food and not enough liquids so the baby may become dehydrated. One thing about supplementing, always try to do the formula at the same time everyday. You body should make enough milk the rest of the time, and just not during that time.

Pump in a quiet place and think about and visualize your Isaac. Think about how great this nutrition will be for him. How much it will help him grow and get home. Have his picture out if you can too. The best stimulation for your milk is concentrating on your little one while pumping. Erin, you are doing great!

If you can get a blanket that he's slept on that can be great too. I found that smelling something that made me remember my babies helped a lot! --Kat
