So...

I go back to work on Monday ( ) and will be pumping to hopefully still give Malcolm as much breast milk as possible. He's 9 1/2 weeks old and he nurses every 2 hours during the day and every 3 hours at night ( ) But when I go back to work, I'll feed him around 5:30-6:00am before I leave and again at 4:30pm when I'll get home. I'll only be able to pump twice at work (10:30am and 1:00pm). So I'll be pumping waaaay less often than he typically nurses. How do I keep my supply up as much as possible? And how do I keep my breasts from hurting when I go that long between nursing/pumping?

Your breasts won't hurt for long, Amy. They'll adjust to what's being asked of them. Drink as much as you can in the classroom. I'm sure teaching can be dehydrating amongst other things. Stock up on Mother's Milk Tea. It's really quite tasty.

You're doing great! Your son is really lucky to have such a dedicated mom.

If it were me Amy I would start the Mothers Milk Tea AND Fenugreek capsules. Your body will adjusts to what you ask of it. I've known women who's breasts knew the difference between M-F and Sat/Sun and she nursed like normal on weekends.

It will take time though. I'd make sure to have extra nursing pads on hand at work.

Amy- I'll be praying for you as you go back to work. I've been back 3 weeks, and I think we're fairly well adjusted. I don't pump as often at work as L eats at home, but it seems to work fine anyway. I get quite a bit when I do pump so I feel like I'm able to empty pretty well. There have been a couple of shifts where I just wasn't able to pump when I should have, and I ended up going 6+ hours without pumping. Because I was busy, I didn't really notice until the situation calmed down. Water and oatmeal have worked well for me as far as supply.

Man ladies I am glad I didn't work today! I got a plugged duct sometime during the night. I wasn't super coherent but realized that side (which is typically super-side) wasn't emptying well and by 6 a.m. it was really uncomfortable. What started as one plugged duct turned in to over 3/4 of that entire side being huge and hard and uncomfortable. Since I didn't work L and I hung out this morning, I did the hot compress thing, tons of massage, and I put her on every time she even looked at me. I called the LC at my hospital and left a message because this was more than a plugged duct, it was an entire plugged side. By the time she was able to call me back the dam had at least started to break free. So far so good for the rest of the day, but that was a good 3 1/2 hours this morning. And now I'm rather sore due to hours of vigorous massage.

I hope that you have solved the problem- I'm glad you don't have to work so that you can hopefully clear it up!

Amy- if your little one eats that often, then he's probably not eating that much each time, so he may eat 2.5-3 ounces at a feeding, but you may be able to pump 4-6 when you do it less often. I would keep a close eye (so if you do start to dip in supply, you can add supplements quickly), and also freeze some one ounce portions so that if he just needs a little top off, you aren't wasting a whole bottle or tempting him to eat more than he needs...

Hi ladies, I have a question. Caden is 8 months old now and seems to be BFing a lot less during the day. He does eat solids 3x a day. Anyway, b/t him slowing down and me being sick the last week, I really feel like my suppy is dwindling. I am drinking Mother's Milk tea and drinking some pineapple juice, but is there anything else I should do? Is it normal for him to be drinking less at this age? He might only do a full nursing once in the afternoon and once first thing in the morning. I do offer him some water during the day too - should I not do that?

Lily, I only offer water at meals per our LC and Ped. I don't see why he would need water other times?

How much and what is he eating at meal times? Do you nurse him before?

What we do with her at 7 months is that she only eats one solid meal aday at this point but it's atleast an hour after nursing. I don't have a néed for her to eat more solids at this point, she has no desire. When she wants more meals I will still offer them an hour after nursing.

Some kids do need solids more often and at younger ages but from all my reading, solids at this age are textur learning and skill learning and not for nutrition until after the 1 year mark. But like I said, all kids are different.

Thanks, Brandy. Maybe I'll try nursing him b4 feeding then. He loves the solids and is actually mainly wanting OUR food these days (he had spaghetti and meatballs last night). I usually nurse him right after he eats, so that might make the difference.

Maybe so... although when we replace a feeding with a bottle, he can down 6 oz. like nobody's business He's a chunky little guy-- he doubled his birth weight by 9 weeks But when I pump between feedings, I can usually pump ~5oz. and whe he takes a bottle and I pump instead of nursing him, I can often pump 10 oz and still not feel "empty." So... maybe I'll be able to keep up

I just have to make it 5 weeks and then I have a week off for Spring Break 11 weeks after that and it will be summer vacation!

Ugh. I just want to tell someone - anyone - that my son has started BITING me. Not just BITING but chewing. It's HORRIBLE. I can't do much about it because it's when he's done - or not very hungry - and then he GRINDS his teeth on my nipple. P.A.I.N.F.U.L.

I think this is the case of humility because I was pridefully saying he never bit me. He knew what my 'baba's' were for and used them to nurse. Now, at the end - or if he's full/bored/not very hungry - he GRINDS.

He doesn't seem very interested in nursing during the day, but loves it at night. I'm always on edge feeding him trying to stop him from chewing/grinding on me. He never does it at night. I think weaning should be relatively easy after his surgery.

What do you do when he does that? He's old enough to understand the word "NO" said in a loud-ish way while pulling him off the breast. If he's not quite done tell him, "Ouch! No biting...hurts mommy!" and then put him back...if he starts again right after tell him the same and put your breast away. He should get the picture quickly.

{{{Jae}}}

It's bad when they do that. Do you pull him off with a loud "NO"?

Biruk didn't bite me until this winter. When he did, it did some actual damage-set off my latest mastitis saga.

Nip it in the bud dear!

Ouch, Jae! That sounds so painful!

I have only been bitten a few times (my kid still just has the two bottom teeth), but a long time ago (before teeth), I always made sure to tell him "Careful" in a soft tone when he would pull my hair or play with my earrings or necklace. "Careful of mom's necklace!"

And so he has grown up now realizing that "Careful" means to slow down because he WILL stop and look at me.

So the few times I've been bitten -- I think it's been maybe 4 -- but twice were when he was really tired and getting lazy and he just bit down (and teeth-nipple-gums is a painful combination though I'm not sure it's as painful as teeth-nipple-teeth!)....and I did have to flick him on the cheek (because it hurt that bad and because at first he didn't just let go). So I flicked his cheek to startle him and said "NO! NO BITE!" And then he cried. I only had to do that twice.

Now if I get nervous he might I just say "Careful! Careful of mama!" and he looks up at me and he KNOWS what that means and he removes himself very carefully before going back on. But maybe that's because we've been doing that from the beginning. And I always make sure to softly praise him "You're such a good boy to not bite mama," (that kind of thing) and stroke his hair. (Man, that kid is putty in my hands.)

But I would probably just take him off the breast if you think he knows and is doing it anyway. "No grind!" If he knows what that is and is doing it anyway, I would think if you said it BEFORE he did it and he did it anyway that he would at some point associate "Hey, when she says 'No bite' or 'No grind' and I do that weird thing with my teeth, I end up not getting as much milk!" I think he is bright enough and old enough to start heeding warnings. You poor thing. That's a pain that sticks with your nipple for a while afterward, too. Ouch, Jae!

Also, I cannot believe Jadon will be 11 months tomorrow -- what a big, big boy!!! Woooo!

I saw this on the news this morning and I guess some are making a fuss over it? Haven't wet nurses been around for decades? Are some just so ignorant?

Millenia, probably since the dawn of time. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that if you have milk and a baby needs milk, you can and should give it to them so they can live? I don't know for sure, but what would happen to a baby if a mom died in labor before formula was available? Yeah, I'm sure some had goat's milk or even cow's milk, but I bet plenty of them were taken in by a nursing mom, KWIM?

Jae, I know this will be unpopular, but for a persistent biter at his age, when nothing else helps, I'd start "popping" him (gently, of course) every single time, along with removing the breast.

True. But most moms, even super nursing ones that I know in the US would not consider nursing someone else's baby. Donating milk, yes. But not actually nursing them. Likewise some mom's are skeeved out by the thought of someone else nursing their baby.

Me? I would have had no problem with my SIL nursing my baby, or even with nursing hers although she did not like that idea at all. It did come up a couple times when she had to go somewhere and her boob snob baby couldn't go.

Jae, I'd listen to Maggie's advice. You need to take stronger action. Your son is old enough and smart enough to know that what he's doing is wrong, and if he continues to do, then he'll get no breast and a "negative response". A few times I had to pull Nathan away from the breast, put him in his crib and turn my back on him. He screamed bloody murder, but he got the message pretty quick.

Ryanne, I think I'm like you with wet nursing. I would nurse my nieces or be ok with my SILs nursing my babies, but I doubt either of them would go for it.

On the cheek. But for me personally I'd only use that as a last resort after you've been consistent with what I suggested earlier. Yelling out NO NO BITING and pulling him off the breast immediately. And repeating if necessary...if he did it again straight away I'd pull him off and tell him NO NO BITING and then put my breast away, telling him "No more milk if you bite mommy!". But that's just my opinon of what worked for me and Jael.

I'm not sure how I'd feel about nursing another women's baby. If she died or was really sick or something, then yes. But, not just cause she needed a night out. I don't know - I'd have to think that one over...

I've nursed other people's babies.......

I was babysitting for a young unwed mother when my first was a baby...she was also a nursing mom...she was going for a job interview one day and she was supposed to be back by 3.....she had left a couple of bottles for him, but 3 comes around...no mommy. 4 rolls around...no mommy. He has gone through all his bottles by this time since she only left him enough to get us to 3. 5 o'clock no mommy...and he is VERY hungry.....I go ahead and nurse him. She finally shows up at 7. I told her I nursed him and why...she is thankful. Her car had broken down on the interstate between our town and the city where she was applying for a job,. (and for those of you wondering why she didn't just call...this was BEFORE cell phones....lol...18 years ago).

As a rule...I wouldn't just nurse someone else's baby without permission...but I won't let a baby suffer either.

I would probably be willing to wet nurse someone's baby even if they were still living.

just to reiterate what Maggie says here...it really isn't a "pop"...it is more of a "tap"
