Not sure if this is "really" on topic but... When my baby was going to have her third surgery, a friend who was nursing knew my milk supply was pretty much gone. She offered to give me some of her pumped supply from her freezer for the hospital stay and a few days after. I thought it was so sweet and would have taken her up on it if I hadn't prepared ahead of time and been stashing my little bit of milk ahead of time. It didn't seem gross to me...it would have been a blessing at the time!

I don't post around here often, but need to call on y'alls combined years of experience. My husband and I are adopting a newborn daughter in May of this year after dealing with infertility for the past 3.5 years. I would love to be able to breastfeed and have done some online research. I really want to experience this with my new little girl and feel that it would greatly aid in the bonding process. I'll have 3 months paid leave after she is born, so that will give us time to get a nursing relationship established. I know it is possible, but does anyone know what the best reference guide would be? Do you have any experience with this or know anyone who has done this?

I suggest that you go to the Motherwear.com website and write to the editor Jody....she adopted SEVERAL children and nursed all of them....she can give you some really good support and advice! She nursed 4 adopted babies before she had her first birth baby.......

I havent been around lately but I need some serious advice. Maybe this doesnt belong here, but honestly, NO issue I have fits in a nice neat category. (I've posted this around some other places so this may be redundant to some). As we are right now, Isaac takes two bottles of milk a day and nurses the rest of the time. The problem is, since Isaac started nursing pumping is not going so great. I pump as much as I can at work (I try to work some pumpings in at home but between nursing and other home things its not overly feasible) but I am still only getting enough for one bottle. Which means we use a fresh bottle and a frozen bottle every day, so essentially I am fighting a loosing battle. The frozen milk is almost gone, just a few more weeks left. I dont think increasing my supply is an option because I had to fight to get it to this level. So...I guess my question is, it looks like supplementing is our only option. So...would it be best to give him a whole bottle of formula or two 1/2 and 1/2 bottles? I will keep pumping and nursing like I am, nothing would change there, and if I got more milk, then thats what he would get. Thoughts? Suggestions? I am really struggling with this, I feel like such a failure to him.

I'm not sure it matters Erin. I wonder if breastfed babies ever have issues with the taste of formula; if they do then mixing it might help. I hope someone else has some ideas. I can't think of any reason why it would matter, other than taste. And making sure you aren't wasting any breastmilk. You are doing great! Dee

I will keep pumping and nursing like I am, nothing would change there, and if I got more milk, then thats what he would get. Thoughts? Suggestions? I am really struggling with this, I feel like such a failure to him. First of all...you ARE not failing him in anyway at all! You are doing a wonderful job, and have been so perseverant through all of this! That said, if you need to supplement, I would suggest making sure that those two bottles are always given at a scheduled time (meaning the two bottles he gets while you are gone)....I would recommend that those bottles be completely formula. Mixing milk and formula doesn't always work real well...makes them taste "funny" to baby and they are more likely to fight it then if the bottle just taste different. If you are able to keep pumping at least one bottle of fresh milk everyday..then he will only be getting one bottle of formula and as long as it is consistantly the X bottle of the day (the one after lunch, etc)...he will adjust to that. My SIL had to supplement with formula while she was at work...she just simply could not pump at all...and her baby had no issues with switching back and forth...she had a well established nursing routine prior to having to go back to work and baby just got 2 to 3 bottles during the work day and then nursed in the evenings and at night and on SIL's days off. It worked....so with you pumping some and supplementing some...you and he should be fine. You are NOT failing him...you are meeting his needs and doing all you can to make sure that they will always be met...regardless of HOW..... It isn't the HOW that is the most important but the fact that they ARE met. You are a great mother.

Here is a book to help with adoptive nursing, as well as increasing milk supply and recognizing when supplementation might be necessary..it is from La Leche.....HERE

some lactation experts do not recommend mixing formula with breastmilk for this reason alone.... a Bottle that has formula that has been fed to baby must have all the leftovers in it discarded within 1 hour of the feed....whereas a breastmilk bottle with leftovers can be saved for a later feeding. Read more about it here: Jan Barger, Lactation consultant Also mixing of breast milk and formula may decrease lysozyme (an anti-infective factor) activity in human milk. (Quan R et al., Clinical Pediatrics, 1994) That said...there is nothing wrong with supplementing with formula if you need to.....just not recommended to mix them in the same bottle. However...most of what I have read says not to mix POWDERED formula with breastmilk or the concentrated formula since this would be a concentrated feed (too many nutrients/calories) and can cause kidney trouble and/or constipation..but pre-mixed formula or diluted formula would be okay, except for the reasons stated above.

ORIGINAL: Homegrownkids Has anyone ever nursed a toddler and had a newborn baby to nurse, too? Can you tell me pro's and con's? Noah is two next week. I would kind of like to wean him before the baby arrives, but no promises. He likes his milk Pros... -helps toddler bond with new baby by "sharing" mom -toddler can help with initial engorgement :P Cons... -can be overwhelming for mom at times -toddler may want to nurse more often, because baby is It just depends, Annie. You'll have to decide how long you're willing to nurse him. If you're going to want to wean soon after the baby is born (he'll be closer to 3?), that might be an issue. Though there were parts I enjoyed about nursing Hannah 2.5 years, I knew when I was expecting Esther that I did NOT want to do that again with Levi. That may have just been different times in my life and also different babies though...

Hi, Jae! Haven't seen you around in AGES! (Don't be such a stranger!) It's fenugreek, here is the kellymom page: L I N K I'm not sure where you can get it but I'm sure you can find it online. It's probably at health food stores, or vitamin-type stores. (*If you know what I mean -- places that sell vitamins and supplements, like GNC or Vitamin World are two stores we have up here.) There is also a tea you can drink. I think it's by Traditional Medicinals (brand name) called "Mother's Milk Tea". I think that has a lot of the goodies in there for building supply. My SIL is back to work and pumping and has had a lot of good luck with fenugreek and some kind of mother's milk supplement, though I can't remember the name of that one, I'm sorry. Cute picture of the little one! Jeanie

Brandy - Sure! Thank You! I normally don't drink tea... does it taste horrible? I can make myself drink it, though! Jeanie - I will look that up! Sorry I haven't been on much. I've gotten involved with the MOPS group out here and they started a board so i normally pop in there when I can get on the computer. Jadon keeps me so busy. I say that with a smile on my face. It's amazing how Smart, fast, and quick that kid has become! lol. I do miss everyone here so maybe I need to find time once he's down! Manda - FORGIVE ME for not responding in pm. My STUPID pm's WON'T WORK! It's hard to explain it. He gets restless and unhappy on my left side... and when I squeeze milk comes out, but it seems decreased. I figured the stuff jeanie and brandy described couldn't hurt! He definitely eats more on my right side. It's almost like he is starting to self wean during the day because he isn't very interested unless it's ABSOLUTELY quiet... even then it's a short feeding. He's STILL UP ever 3-4 hours at night. I'm at a loss because I can't let him cry or my neighbors get really upset because he wakes them up. He SCREAMS bloody murder until he gets baba's. He's normally a very happy baby so I'm at a loss. I just hope it ends SOME DAY. lol. I know he CAN sleep longer because he will a few times a month. I dunno. OH!!! And the "tap" or "pop" worked wonders. He stopped doing the grinding/chewing/biting thing!!! Thank you for that advice!

I think 3x3 is about when I was seeing results. You could always start lower and see how you respond.
