I always complain I never have a smell like Jason does. I can handle smelling like maple syrup. LOL.

ORIGINAL: Homegrownkids Has anyone ever nursed a toddler and had a newborn baby to nurse, too? Can you tell me pro's and con's? Noah is two next week. I would kind of like to wean him before the baby arrives, but no promises. He likes his milk I have.... the pros are that you don't have the sibling rivalry that often comes with a newly weaned toddler and a baby (and by newly weaned I mean one that was parent weaned as much as 3 months before baby coming).... You don't have to worry about making sure toddler is getting enough nutrition outside of solids. You have wonderful snuggly times with both babies. cons the sad look on toddler's face when they realize that baby always gets to go first. the excessive amount of touching....I often felt touched out....I was holding and nursing someone almost all day (usually just the baby...but with the last two...my toddler was only 22 months older....so he still nursed quite a bit). I would not change having tandem nursed at all. My third baby weaned herself 2 weeks before baby #4 arrived...I think my tummy was in her way and she was down to only nursing once in the mornings...she simply just said that "I am too big for nummy I think". and that was that. #4....didn't wean until baby #5 was a year old....but that was okay. It worked for me.

Janine it's on it's way. I also used 3 x 3 to get to maple syrup smell and effectiveness. Ryanne, Gabby's belated socks are on the way also.

Erin/Ryanne: How many mg's were your pills? I'm just wanting to make sure I'm not 'over' doing it.

Nothing bad is going to happen even if you do take to much. You'll just sweat/pee it out.

I think it's the breast that keeps you from over feeding, because the flow will vary throughout the feeding. With a bottle, you have the same continuous flow and only their sucking varies. Does that make sense?

ORIGINAL: artemis I don't know if this should go here or the other thread, but... I've read that you can't overfeed a breast-fed baby, but that you can overfeed a bottle fed baby. But then the explanation to that always goes into detail about properly mixing formula and not putting too much formula in a bottle, etc. My little boy eats from a bottle more than he does from the breast, but it's expressed breast milk, not formula. I guess what I'm wondering is if it's the breast or the breastmilk that keeps you from overfeeding? For the record, I don't think we're overfeeding our baby, but he does eat a LOT I think it is the bottle...but I think it goes back to whether or not you feed on demand and stop when baby is no longer interested. I think a lot of the overfeeding dates back to the baby must eat on this set schedule and must eat said amount of ounces per feeding....even if they are not interested. While I think it is easier for baby to manage their feeds with the breast, I think as long as you follow the cues of your child, you don't have to stress over feeding them too much. One sign of overfeeding is excessive spit up following a feed....but the problem with that is, excessive spit up is indicative of lots of other things as well. But again...when baby loses interest in the bottle....they are done. I think in the past a lot of mothers worried more that they finish that bottle...because that is what they had been told to do. Feeding on demand and stopping on demand, whether with the breast or a bottle, prevents overfeed.

ORIGINAL: artemis That makes sense about bottles. My husband is the one feeding the baby a bottle, but I don't think he forces him to finish a bottle or to eat when he's not hungry. We feed him (breast or bottle) when he acts hungry, which is every 2 hours during the day and every 3 hours at night. I guess he just likes to eat! He eats ravenously from the breast about 7-8 times in a 24 hour period in addition to taking 15-20 oz. of expressed breast milk. He's a BIG boy sounds like he is just hungry....I didn't use a bottle with mine except for the occasional date but I know that they ate 9 to 14 times easily in that 24 hour period...so if you add in your bottles...sounds like he is doing just fine!

Well, I got some difficult news. Beth has been having blood in her stool, as well as extremely runny stools (more then is usual for a 2 month old baby). The doctor today said that Beth most likely has a dairy allergy through my breast milk. She said it's rare but it happens. I have to cut out all dairy for about two weeks. And that's soy milk as well as cow milk - everything has to be stopped. If changes in my diet aren't enough the threat is that I might have to stop breast feeding and put her on hypoallergenic formula. But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it. I am a huge dairy fan. I love milk and cheese. I looked at the menu for this week, and there's tons of dairy in it. I've already bought the food, so I can cook for my family, but I'm a little lost about cooking for myself. I know that this is not a big deal in the long run, but right now I'm kinda reeling from the news that my milk was making my daughter bleed. And how do people eat without cow or soy milk? Doc did say that after two weeks if the bleeding stops we might introduce me to soy milk and see what affect that has.

Oh Ruth! Does your insuance cover a consult with a nuyritionist if your Ped can write referral? That would be my route if Isabel had such a strong dairy allergy. Look at Kellymom and dr sears' sites for info.

Ruth I cut out all dairy for 6 months for my own benefit, and it wasn't as difficult as I thought. The hardest part was giving up coffee (I didn't like it black) as I had caffeine withdrawals for 5 days. You could always post in Home & Garden and get some dairy-free tips from those of us posting there. I eat dairy-free chocolate and it's lovely! There are plenty of other things that contain the necessary calcium - it can actually get quite interesting!!

(((((Ruth,))))) when we went through the dairy/soy free stage -- it was hard especially at first. Rice or almond milk (almond milk has a bit of almondy taste) are good substitutes. Although, it does take re-thinking how one goes about cooking. I think we did a lot of rice in the first few weeks. Get used to reading labels and looking for milk in everything from breads, crackers, cereals, ... everything.

Now, the doc thought that processed milk would be ok, like in breads or cakes, but maybe I should go super strict for two weeks, then slowly bring stuff back in. My dH is doing research, and it's astounding the things that have milk proteins in them, even processed meat (not good for me anyways). The list of forbidden foods is huge. Like myka said, even most cereals are verbotten. Brandy, we like your suggestion about a nutritionist. I'll call Kaiser on Monday morning. Thanks for the suggestions everyone and your support. It means a lot to me.

I leave the rolled oats to soak in water for half an hour before eating (I eat them cold), and the resultant liquid is opaque and even looks like milk. It's just not quite so rich.
