My last three children have been very sensitive to mild products in my breast milk. This newest child (5 weeks old) is no exception. I lost some weight because all I would eat is cereal, and when I had to cut that out, I just didn't eat anything. I understand exactly how you feel, Ruth, because I absolutely love milk. We never had the serious problem of blood in the stool, but my kids would be very gassy and projectile vomit continually with every feeding. You do get use to it after awhile. Hopefully you can cut out the straight milk but still indulge in the occasional cheese, etc....

And how do people eat without cow or soy milk? Doc did say that after two weeks if the bleeding stops we might introduce me to soy milk and see what affect that has. We do it every day Well, we don't cut casiens and whey all the time, but besides yogurt and sometimes cheese we are pretty much dairy free. Although I will admit there are times when I eat more then I should, and I pay for it... Cutting soy was actually harder then dairy, but that will depend on the severity of the allergies. With Gabby she reacted even to soy lecithin, although soy oils were ok. Rice and Almond milk were always good, although I didn't give Gabby almond milk because of the nuts. But YOU drinking it should be ok. We just went back to the basics of whole foods for Gabby's entire first year. It's been a great diet change, we all feel better eating this way. Meats, veggies, rice, potatoes are all ok. I just learned to make them in about every variety possible. I also used THESE lists a lot when shopping, they have the brands and varieties of different categories of foods that are dairy free. Whole Foods also used to have lists based on your nearest store but I went looking for them today and apparently they took them down last December I also really like THIS cookbook, it might be worth seeing if your library has a copy. The 15ish months of Gabby's life were the hardest for me cooking wise because we avoided SO much with her... But I really think it paid off in the end because she's pretty much outgrown her soy allergy and hasn't developed any others. We avoided everything it seemed like with her- wheat, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, dairy, and soy. We probably should have done corn too, but we didn't. Also, you might consider cutting dairy out for 3-4 weeks, as it can take 2 weeks to leave your system and another 2 weeks to totally leave Beth's. You CAN do this, it's hard but definitely doable. And the upside is you might lose some weight

(((((((((((((((((((((((Ruth))))))))))))))))))))) How scary to find blood in your daughters stool!!!! I would be upset as well. I'm praying it's an easier transition than you think. ~~~ Is it possible to have a kid self wean RIGHT at 12 months? He isn't nursing! Maybe at night. I'm worried my milk is going to dry out. He kind of drinks out a sippy cup, but he doesn't love it. Any advice?

I agree, let Jadon lead the way. 12 months isn't to early to self wean. Well, I feel better. I tried some almond milk, and my favorite cereals do not have dairy. For dinner I had a garden salad and made homemade hummus with pita bread. I think I can do this. While I am avoiding soy milk, I'm not abstaining from all soy for now.

I am glad you feel better, Ruth! How do I know it's self weaning and not something else?

ORIGINAL: Flintejae I'm just worried he isn't getting enough fluids. He will drink when he is thirsty, don't worry!! What's the temperature like there at the moment? People don't usually drink as much in winter as they do in summer, remember. quote:
Do I introduce milk to him in a sippy cup? formula? I introduced cows milk at 9 months. You could try formula if you wanted to, but since Jadon hasn't ever had formula, he might find it a bit yukky. Do you have any free samples you could use, so that you don't have get a whole can and risk having to waste it? But so long as Jadon is getting his calcium from other dairy products, he doesn't actually need that much milk. See what he will drink, but don't try to make him. Let him take the lead. Is he having milk on cereal or oatmeal at all? Is he having other softer or runny type foods like soups, yogurts etc? If so, remember that there is liquid in those as well.

He kind of drinks out a sippy cup, but he doesn't love it. Any advice? It is one of those things that can be sad about child led weaning...they choose..and sometimes they choose earlier than we would like and sometimes later. quote:
Jason and I have both been sick as dogs. I honestly don't ever remember being that sick for that long. It's day three and I'm finally starting to feel semi normal, but i still have very little appetite. He's had diarrhea and isn't interested in eating much. Although, the lack of interest in nursing has been happening for 2-3 weeks now well before we got sick. His pee diapers are less. I'm just worried he isn't getting enough fluids. Do I introduce milk to him in a sippy cup? formula? At this point, I would offer him water or diluted juice (kids should not have more than 7 oz of undiluted juice a day) in the sippy cup. Make sure he is eating a lot of dark greens, yogurt, cheese or milk on cereal to get his calcium...and if he is interested in nursing, then go with it, and if he is not, don't. Do this for a week or two and if he still doesn't want to nurse, then start offering him milk (and you can go just to dairy since he is 12 months) in his sippy cup, but only at meal times or set snuggle times as running around with a sippy cup of milk can lead to bottle-rot on the teeth.

Can you offer him yogurt before milk? Whole Milk really isn't everything that a kid needs nutritionally, if he isn't drinking much I would be hesitant to just give him whole milk. I would maybe try a toddler formula... How is his regular diet looking now?

The garlic may help, but echinacea actually does not really work for children under 2. It will help you only as long as you do not take it all the time. It is an herb that is best used as a "rescue herb"....on an as needed basis. It stops boosting the immune system if taken over the long term. As to people touching his hands...keep wipes on hand and wash his hands every time someone touches him...OR offer them to him when they come up to him and say, "I am sorry....he is really prone to catching things...would you mind washing your hands before you play with him..."

I'm thinking jadon and I have the same virus. I've had diarreah since Friday and Jadon's SOFT SOFT SOFT stool is the same color as my diarreah. I did notice a small rash on his face today that I'm watching. But, he has no fever He has nursed better today so now I'm a bit confused. I'm thinking jadon and I have the same virus. I've had diarreah since Friday and Jadon's SOFT SOFT SOFT stool is the same color as my diarreah - light green. I did notice a small rash on his face today that I'm watching. But, he has no fever. I'm not sure what I should do. Ride this out or take him to a doctor. I'm told there are HORRIBLE things going around right now so I'd like to aviod the doctors office if I can.

I'd just ride it our, Jae, as long as he's not showing signs of dehydration. I don't bring my kids in for tummy viruses unless they are dehydrated or it's gone on for a long time, two weeks or so. I would nurse him as he wants, give him as much water or Pedialyte as he wants, and mix some acidophillus in with the water/Pedialyte.

Otherwise just keep nursing and pushing fluids.

Janine Bugs usually work their way through babies' and children's system far quicker than those of adults, so it may well work its way out of Jadon's system far quicker than yours or Jason's! He doesn't have a fever and he's taking fluids, so if it was me, I wouldn't be going to the doctor or hospital, especially as all they're likely to say is to keep up the fluids and see how it goes.

Thank you for the comments. That's what I thought as well. I called the NM nurse line and she confirmed that what we are going through is a common thing. She said it's been surprising just how evil this strand has been. I'm having Jason come home with pedialyte tonight. Thanks for everything!! Ruth - How are you feeling today?

Ruth - What a professional sleeper!!!! I can't imagine not eating dairy. Kudos to you for being willing to do that. I'm glad nathan is better! Jadon is definitely starting to self wean. He isn't interested in nursing nearly as much, but hasn't quite wanted to give it up. So just stick with water/juice/yogurt/cheeses? When should I start offering him milk?
