If he's healthy, then I'd give him milk and see how he likes it.

I had some cheese accidentally yesterday, and I can see it now in Beth. Poor girl. Mommy didn't mean to hurt you.

Did you just take a bite without thinking? (once, when I'd given up dairy, I was preparing a pizza for the rest of my family and just scooped up some of the grated cheese and popped it in my mouth before I realised what I'd just done!)

Went out to dinner with my mum, and the restaurant gave us an aperitif. I didn't see cheese in it, but I tasted the feta. Man, it tasted good, too.

An Irish friend of mine is allergic to milk and a lot of the symptoms she mentioned matched Beth, including translucent skin. My friend is also allergic to potatoes, and I don't know if it's rude to tease her about it ... an Irishwoman allergic to potatoes.

Dont know if this goes here or in "when the breast wasnt best" so I'll post it in both....

Some of you may remember that I had to start giving Isaac one or two bottles of forumla while I am at work because I cant pump enough. The milk is there but I just cant get it out. We nurse exclusively at home on the weekends and in the evenings just fine. Adding in many more pumpings is near impossible if I want to get any work done or spend anytime with Isaac. We have been doing this for about a month, well this week he's started refusing it. Or taking just a little with obvious distaste. What do I do?

I wish I knew, Erin, I'm sorry.

A while back a two year old boy ran up to me while I was feeding Beth in a corner. He didn't understand what I was doing. His mom seemed fine with the situation but she pulled him away to give me privacy. As they were walking I heard her explain to him that I was "feeding the baby the same way that animals feed their babies".... which is true for mammals.

I just wasn't sure what to think of the explanation.

Hmm...that explanation could go either way.

This weekend I was at a wedding shower and it was winding down and I was sitting over to the side away from everyone feeeind Isaac and a little girl came over (I knew she had been breastfed and even heard she still nurses at night) and she came over so sweetly and remarked about him eating, without being shocked. Some of my family, in the same circumstance I've gotten a "what are you doing?" It was nice experience to see her so comfortable with it.

My Irish friends must be used to it, too. I was at their shop nursing Beth in a secluded area, and they had no troubles coming up to take a look at the baby, as I hadn't been by to visit them in a few weeks. They didn't even seem to notice that I was nursing, they just wanted to see how much she'd grown.

Yeah, thats what was so refreshing about this little girl (almost three I think). She walked over and I was tensed up thinking about what I was going to say when I got the "what are you doing?" But she was more concerned with what his name was.

Ruth - What a professional sleeper!!!! I can't imagine not eating dairy. Kudos to you for being willing to do that. I'm glad nathan is better!

Jadon is definitely starting to self wean. He isn't interested in nursing nearly as much, but hasn't quite wanted to give it up. So just stick with water/juice/yogurt/cheeses? When should I start offering him milk?

Is he a year old? If he is (wow...where did time go?!?!?!), you can start offering him milk in a sippy cup at meal times and during snuggle times if he does not show an interest in nursing. Basically make sure that you do not offer juice or water too often (more than you are now)....but make sure that he has access to milk.

It is not necessary to use follow-up formulas if a baby is 1 year old. Those formulas are mostly for babies 6 mo and older who are not nursing.

what is he showing the distaste for..the nursings or the formula? (I am being dense I am sure)....

They are actually for babies 9 months+ and a lot of more up to date pediatricians are recommending that they be used in place of whole milk because they are more easily digest and much more nutritious. Dr.Sears advocates them pretty heavily, especially for kids that aren't breastfed until age two.

I'm sorry I was flustered and in a rush...he's not wanting the formula.

I would say just wait it out....when he gets hungry enough during the day, he will take the formula. He will adjust. My sil had to to this when her youngest was a baby for the same reasons....she just could not pump the milk out. It took a little while, but M finally got used to the routine and it all worked out okay. Just be patient with him...he knows what he likes and he does not quite realize that this is how it has to be..that sometimes he has to eat stuff he doesn't like as much when Mom isn't there.

I went to Dr. Sears' webpage, and the only information I could find from him about follow up formulas was this:

FOLLOW-UP FORMULAS

A new trend in artificial baby milk, popular in Europe and now on the shelves in U.S. supermarkets, is formula designed for the infant older than six months and are meant to be a bridge between regular formula and cow's milk, which should not be introduced until some time after age one. Two questions arise about follow-up formulas: are they nutritious and are they necessary? The rationale for follow-up formulas is that the nutritional needs of infants greatly increase after the age of six months (especially for calcium, iron, and protein), and some infants may have difficulty meeting these increased requirements with greater volumes of standard formula, plus solid foods. The following discussion concerns Carnation Follow-up Formula. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of follow-up formula.

Advantages:

* Contains more calcium. From six months to a year the RDA for calcium in infants increases by fifty percent, from 400 milligrams to 600 milligrams. Carnation Follow-up formula contains 600 milligrams of calcium in 24 ounces. It would take 39 ounces a day of standard formula to meet these calcium requirements.
* Contains more iron. From six to twelve months a baby's daily iron requirements increase from six milligrams to ten milligrams a day. This extra iron could be supplied in 26 ounces of follow-up formula or 27 to 33 ounces of standard formula, so there isn't a great advantage to the follow-up formula here.
* Contains more protein. From six to twelve months an infant requires an extra three to four milligrams of protein a day. Follow-up formulas contain from 10 to 25 percent more protein. A baby would need an extra three to eight ounces of standard formula per day to get this extra protein.
* Costs less. The cost is around 20 percent less than the price of regular formula.
* May taste better. Because it is basically milk, it tastes more like milk.

Disadvantages:

* Casein/whey ratio different from human milk. Basically, Carnation Good Start Follow-up is like the older version of Similac: 82 percent casein and 18 percent whey, plus calcium and a newer fat blend.
* Sweetened with corn syrup. The rationale for replacing lactose in the milk with corn syrup is to get it to taste sweeter. In our opinion, using corn syrup as the prime milk-carbohydrate source in an infant under a year is nutritionally unwise. Besides insuring proper nutrition, one of the main goals in feeding an infant over six months is to shape young tastes toward the normal taste of fresh foods. Corn syrup is a sweetener and certainly shouldn't be part of a food babies eat several times each day. Our conclusion: we do not recommend follow-up formulas that contain corn syrup. They are nutritionally unwise and unnecessary. Better to give your baby a higher volume of standard formula (growing babies need more fluid anyway), plus calcium and iron-containing solid foods.

That was an interesting read!!!!!!!!!

I got my hopes up and now Jadon has decided he isn't ready to wean. I've dropped one feeding, but he still wants the rest. I think the shift had something to do with not feeling well and the stress I was under with intense family conflict. I think Jadon is going to be sensitive to people when they are hurting. I see a sensitivity in him when the atmosphere isn't happy or right. It affects him. I realize it affects all infants, but I just see that sensitivity in him. I'm not sure how to explain it.

Has this "intense family conflict" been taking place in front of him, or within his sight/hearing?

This is what I had read, I guess it doesn't say follow up formula specifically, but I do know it's what our ped(whose style is very similar to Dr.Sears) recommends-

quote:

SWITCHING TO MILK

I've been feeding my baby iron-fortified formula. When is it okay to switch to whole cow's milk?
Research comparing cow's milk and formula-fed infants during the first year of life has shown that cow's milk is irritating to the intestines of a tiny infant, causing infants to lose a tiny bit of blood in their stools, contributing to iron deficiency anemia. There is very little iron in cow's milk anyway, and the iron that is there is poorly absorbed. Concern about iron-deficiency anemia has led the American Academy of Pediatrics, backed by solid research, to discourage the use of cow's milk in children under one year of age. One of America's top pediatric hematologists (blood specialist), the late Dr. Frank Oski , Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University (and co-author of a book entitled: Don't Drink Your Milk) advised parents to be cautious and not rush into the use of cow's milk, even during the second year of life. At present it would seem prudent to continue giving your baby iron-fortified formula during the second year of life and very gradually wean him to dairy products, beginning with yogurt. If your toddler generally has a balanced diet and routine hemoglobin tests show that he is not even close to being anemic, then switch from formula to whole milk sometime during the second year, but don't be in a hurry.

SOURCE

"Don't Drink Your Milk" is actually a very interesting read... We aren't big milk people as far as drinking it, but I do make it into yogurt. Gabby actually gets mostly yogurt but I have considered giving her some more formula since she's been getting stuck in a hotdog/chicken/green beans rut.

Janine

I understand things like that can happen to everyone (I remember when it happened with us and our ds), but IMO it's very very important not to have arguments in front of babies, toddlers and children if at all possible. All it need take is JUST one adult saying "I know things are a bit difficult right now, but NOT in front of Jadon please" or "can we do this another time please, for Jadon's sake". It doesn't matter which adult it is, so long as someone does it.

If you want we could talk about this some more in the Baby Chat thread. You could ask about other people's experiences of babies and arguments, and see how they dealt with it.

I learned from it. He mainly saw me cry... a lot. A ton, really. And lots LOTS LOTS of tension. It really affected him. I won't let that happen again.
