Donna - I just read your latest blog entry. My comment:

My goodness, woman, how old did you say you were? Such wisdom! Cheers! Applause! Whistles!

Donna, That was an excellent blog entry. You are growing in wisdom. There is a Helen Reddy song with a line, "It's wisdom for the pain." That is so true. But true wisdom comes not only through the pains and difficulties of life, but through a heart that is soft and open before the Lord and looking to Him for all the answers.

Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Something I've never thought about before, I wonder how the guy who hit Brian is feeling? I know the farmer himself seems to be callus, but I wonder if the guy who hit Brian feels anguish? I can't imagine anyone doing such a thing and not feel horrible. What kind of person would not feel horrible?

I bet he isn't allowed to say anything to Brian though because of lawyers.

(I know one might not even care how he is feeling, but it's something I hadn't thought of before.)

The guy who hit Brian has hit several other people too. I would think that if he has remorse or concern that he would stop doing it. He's a serial ... cannot think of a good term, but this is a series of events for this guy.

Wow You'd have to have a pretty hard heart to do that.

AFAIK, the guy is finally not driving anything off the farm. Probably only because of the lawsuit though. It seems that it's not just the farmer that is callous, but everyone who works at the farm.

God is our judge. No matter what happens with the lawsuit, God knows they were in the wrong and God will deal with them. It's taken a lot for me to let go of that.

Thanks...I'm not really that wise. I just have rare moments of insight and I have to record them to look back on the times I lose the vision.

Donna, that was a really good blog post. You write wonderfully.

Is it ok if I add to your Public Service Announcement? Please don't drive when you're really tired. I don't care how good your excuse is... just don't do it. It's the same as driving drunk, and most of us here would be horrified at the thought of driving drunk. Take a nap, call a friend, get a really strong cup of coffee, but don't get behind the wheel of a car until you are plenty awake and alert.

My uncle was killed years ago by a truck driver who fell asleep at the wheel. My uncle never had a chance in his little car, and the trucker walked away. My dad lost his only brother, his family lost their husband/father/leader.

I completely agree with your statement, Sideways. I have an uncle who drives routinely while asleep or falling asleep - I'm not exaggerating, here. His wife has to wake him up several times during a trip. It scares me to death to think of him out on the road (he travels back and forth from SC to NY City at least once a month) with his family in the car. It's plain irresponsible and makes me angry to know he puts not only himself and his family in danger, but also the other drivers/passengers on the road.

We have a rule in our house - no one drives if they are tired. Period. I'd rather get somewhere late or just not go rather than get behind the wheel while sleepy. Not worth it. Ever.

When we travel, Dh will drive all day but pull over and find a motel around 5. He says there is no sense in driving all night. We have made trips to southwest MO and it's taken 3 days.

Anyone who routinely has difficulty staying awake behind the wheel should have a sleep study done. They might have sleep apnea.

And, if you are sleepy - try fruit juice instead of (or in addition to) coffee.

You can drink it faster and you absorb fruit sugar quickly.

Caragen's in surgery now.

I came across another accident near Brian's corner today. Just one car going too fast and lost control, it looked like. And then they were doing road work JUST around the corner where Brian's car landed...I so did not need that stress this morning.

I'll be picking up my mom at 4 and going to see Caragen.

I didn't mention it in here? I thought I had...

They're putting in a piece of genetic plastic (not sure what that means) where her skull bone is missing.

Now if I could just get my 'memberer to 'member this saying, I'll be glad! Too Cute!

She did great. Two hours in surgery. They let her Mommy go all the way to the OR with her, which I think is wonderful! When I saw her, she was settled in her crib/bed in the PICU stepdown. She was awake, but "drifty". The more she woke up, the more she was adamant that she wanted OUT of bed. LOL...that kid has spunk.

From what I understand, she doesn't have to wear her helmet at all anymore, not even while the incision heals! Yay! It's hard to see her beautiful face and eyes with the helmet on.

I'm hoping in a few weeks, Hannah and I can steal her away for a trip to the zoo.

My brother... That's all I will say about him. Pray that he follows through on going to a rehab when he gets out of prison. It is clear to all that his mindset and view of life has not changed yet. He's been in jail since June 3rd. I need to find an Al-anon meeting for the rest of us to go to. We need to be ready to not be manipulated by him when he gets out, especially my parents.

ETA...I keep meaning to put this here because I plan to go through this thread later and make a timeline. Brian's wheelchair went bye-bye yesterday. It was a rental and we decided he isn't using it enough to justify having it anymore. If we go somewhere he needs one, they usually have them there to use...Walmart, the zoo, etc. I kind of wish they had just bought it for him instead of renting it...then we could have found someone who needed it and given it to them. Oh well...

I just wanted to say that is a GREAT GOAL. More than a goal, it is the wording and the strength behind it. Partly because I like the turn of the phrase itself - the idea of being ready to NOT do something when we usually prepare TO do something.

I will be praying for your family. I'm so glad there are tools and supports for you. God puts those folks in the places they are in to help people who are in the places you are in. It amazes the snot out of me.

Glad to hear the little one is doing well. Even as I was asking why part of me said that was the plate that grows and you told us, but I wasn't sure of the timing and was hoping there wasn't a complication.

I am so glad that she is doing well. I can't help but be curious though... I have nylon plate put in my head when I was four. It was the first year that they had started using them. Before that was the metal plates that needed replacing as one grew. The doctors didn't know how well it would work and I am pleased to say that it has done well and the bone has grown into it and I have never needed to have it replaced. I am wondering what makes the stuff that they used for Caragen different... I am curious what "genetic" plastic is and how it is better than nylon. Hmmmmm... When I get time, I will have to look that up. Unless someone here knows the answer.

I looked and can't find anything. I'm thinking the term genetic plastic is the lay term for whatever they are talking about. It's what Caragen's mom told my parents though. From what I understand, somehow the plastic is engineered with a component that matches Caragen's DNA closely. It helps it grow bone faster...so maybe some kind of cadaver tissue or bone graft??? I don't know...just guessing.

I wonder if it's similar to Ellie's but has some of Caragen's DNA on it so the bone with graft better? What did they do with the skull piece?
A friend of mine has the mesh and they ground up the skull piece and embedded it into the mesh, the new bone growth was super quick and the Dr's are very happy.

Yay for Caragen and getting her skull back ;)

Boo to brothers who just can't seem to learn their lessons.
