If you were told by those in power in your own country that, in order to go out in public, you would have to wear a burqa, would you? Although I realize the changes that would have to take place for this to happen in the USA, please don't make anything more of this thread than that it is a simple question.

I would not wear one. It is associated mainly with the Islamic religioin, which is anti-Christ. "...no appearance of evil."

I would if it meant being allowed in public VS death. However, I don't think our country will ever come to that... Britain on the other hand could.

Hmm...take away the Islamic reference. How about any clothing restrictions? Private school uniforms. Enforced public clothing codes such as a school would have. What if they only say no tank tops or mini skirts? No bikinis? I would probably remain indoors/with friends as much as possible but I would go out sometimes. It seems silly to never go into public. I'm sure many women dislike the physical problems (practical wearing) of the burka but feel very comfortable being clothed with a modest coat and head scarf. BTW even in Iran the burka is not required wearing in most cities. Burqa are generally used in mosques and only in the most religious cities.

If it was the law, I would. This topic enters my mind on occasion and I have to say the thought of it does concern me. It could happen. Think of how many other extremes that "would never happen" are now becoming legal and accepted these days.

It would depend on the reasoning for it. Is it because my country has now become an Islamic State, or is it for another reason. Either way I don't think I would be sticking around. As a headcovering Christian I'm not against the covering up part, but I'm more against the government telling me I have to do, or really whatever reason it could be (unless the government decides all Christian women should cover their heads)

If it became the national law, I would. Because, if it became the national law, there would be some consequence for breaking it, and I wouldn't put myself or my family in danger over covering up. I don't believe obeying a modesty law, even extreme, over-the-top modesty will put me on the outs with God. I will die rather than bow to an idol, participate in a heathen religious service, or deny Christ. But I am not willing to die over how much skin I have to cover. If covering head-to-toe is giving an appearance of evil, or wearing the standard dress of cultures that are Islamic is evil, then are native Christians and missionaries in those countries sinning, if the only way to safely stay in that country is for their women to obey the clothing laws? I'm thinking of one missionary couple in particular that I know of, in a country that is 99.9% islamic and the wife absolutely does wear a burka whenever she leaves the house. She'd be in danger of beating and deportation if she didn't.

I read Honeymoon in Purdah by Alison Wearing last month. It gave me a unique perspective of Islamic covering. I'd recommend it. Burka are usually specific to Pakistan and Afganistan (although some others wear something similar on certain occasions or in certain places). They tend to cover the entire body including the eyes with a type of webbing. Most other Islamic countries require or encourage hijab (covering) but not necessarily the face. Instead it's more like a robe or a long coat with a head scarf. Chador or other body coverings are more for religious occasions and places. Again, that's how I understand it.

That book sounds interesting Tamara. I just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns on audiobook and Miriam's description of feeling safe because she could hide behind the burka was intriguing to me. As for the heat, after a certain point temperature-wise, it can actually be cooler to be fully covered, depending on the material that you are covered in.

I have a Muslim friend who covers everything but her eyes when in public. She wears the hijab and the niqab (which the cloth that goes around her face under her eyes.) She is from Lebanon originally, but didn't start covering her face until she had been in Canada for a while. She said that when she decided to cover, her father tried to stop her. He didn't want her doing it here. He told her it would be difficult for her and it's a big decision to make and it's not an actual requirement of Islam but a decision (I guess it relates to skirts only - not an actual requirement of Christianity, but something some women feel convicted to do). It was interesting to listen to her talk about it. (And I'm proud that I can now recognize some of my niqab wearing friends out on the street by just their eyes!) Sideways - I get what you're saying about living in a theocracy, I don't know if I could either. I just know that if Christian women were told to cover their heads it wouldn't be a problem for me since I do it already! But with that, there would be a million other things they would be telling me to do and I'm not for that. If I were in a Muslim country for whatever reason, I would cover myself appropriately for that country. I don't want to disrespect the country I am in. When I was in university I attended a Muslim prayer on campus. I wanted to see what it was like. Even though I sat in the back and didn't participate, I still wore the hijab to be respectful. Just as I would hope that anyone else would dress appropriately when they come into my church, even if it's not how they dress regularly.

I would do it - if it's the law, it's the law. I see nothing immoral with doing it - it's not like Daniel and his friends refusing to eat the unclean food of the King - the food was forbidden by Hebrew Law. I don't see anything that says the burqa (how DO you spell it? I've seen it spelled 3 different ways on this thread. ha ha) is forbidden. As much as I love my freedom and I'd like to say "I'll leave to go to another country" it's not that easy to pack up and leave the STATE you live in, let alone the COUNTRY - I don't know that the burqa would be enough for me to say "Adios...." and emigrate. I think it would have to be much more than that.
