Sarah, I like that scarf! One of my close friends was so thoughtful and bought me a whole bunch of silky scarves from the thrift store in bright bold colors and patterns! Bright and bold, just like me! [8D]

LOL, Sandy! The only other person that has called me Stina was 2 and it was because he couldn't pronounce my name. It is the ONLY shortened version of my name I like, probably because of the kid. LOL, yeah you can call me Stina.

Sarah, I like that scarf too. I think dark colors, blacks, grays, etc. go really good with your complexion.

Is it ok to ask questions in this thread? Like HSing, I have never heard of head covering until these forums, and not until this year have I even seen or at least noticed people talking about it. I haven't looked, but have not found the One stop thread, but I really don't want to ask there, because I just have questinons, don't wish to debate.

What is the basis of head covering? What purpose does it serve, and what makes it obedient? I seriously want to know because I don't, and I do know that I have seen people at church with their heads covered, but not to sound stupid, I just thought it was a cultural thing. So is it ok that I asked these questions here?

The purpose is to "honor her head (husband)". Recognizing the husband/wife arrangement and each of their places in the relationship.
Doing so would make one obedient to her husband (recognizing the headship arrangement) and obedient to God since through Paul He says to do so.

hello ladies,

I think I will have to report that I initially agree with covering. I am not sure all the reasons why. I believe because it is written in the bible.

I did cover for a time, but then was never given much of a chance to prophesy or pray publically so I stopped. Then I cut my hair.

I am single, as well, so this may make a difference.

At the time that I was covering I was much closer to the HOly SPirit daily, and just didn't question it, I found it i the bible and just did it automatically.

I was the only one in my church or in my town who did it, or that I have seen or even heard of.
?? hmm

If I could get to prophesy I would continually cover my head.

I am not sure if the physcial thing of covering is meant by the scriptures for our culture now where women do not in the culture. the women did in the culture of the time of paul. it was a letter written to the people in that culture with those cultural rules. this may make a diff.

however, it did say it was because of the angels, and the angels were not just present or working iwth the people in that culture, they are now and for us here in this culture. so this is not a cultural thing, covring because of the angels.

To add to what Christina wrote, for me it is also about humbling myself before God. We are taught that our hair is given to us for a glory. And also taught to humble ourselves before God. I personally need to have my entire head covered to feel modest and humbled before God.

I was strongly convicted of this after being at a church convention. Women there would have their hair highlighted or braided fancy and then a small hat covering their head and their hair out.

Now, I don't see anything wrong with highlighting or styling our hair (I do it as well) but for me personally, I feel that when you can see the way I do my hair that I'm trying to put the focus on my glory rather than the God's glory.

I'm not sure if that makes any sense.[8D]

Covering the head just for worship services was the way things were at the church where I was saved as well. That was a Free Evangelical Church which had its roots in the Open Brethren movement. Though actually, now that I think about it, women only had to cover their heads if they intended to actively participate in the service (which was 90 minutes of open sharing/worship up to communion at midday). In the days when I was first saved, I did wear a headscarf to the service in case God gave me something to share. I used to just wear a simple navy polka dot and striped headscarf.

(The only church in the UK that I am aware of where women cover their heads all the time is the Closed (or Exclusive) Brethren.)



I haven't met many people who are familiar with the closed brethren! I go to an "open" brethren... I guess that's the word?! Anyways... I only cover at church, but at mine women don't verbally participate.
I call them veils, mantillas or headcoverings. Kinda interchange all three words. Sometimes I use a scarf, occasionally a bandanna, but usually it is a triangular, lace veil. My mum makes them and sells them all over the US and Canada.

Ryanne, could you cover with something that is a little inobtrusive? A wide ribbon or headband, a pretty scarf wrapped nicely, or something.

Josiah was concerned for a while that my covering was kind of a "spectacle". I don't know why. The first Sunday we were there the bishops wife was up on stage in a massive, bright purple, wildly feathered hat. My little white covering was nothin' compared to that particular spectacle. [8D]

I"m wondering the same thing. I feel that if I do decide to cover I should try to do it all of the time (because we're called to pray continually), but I KNOW that it would draw attention since I don't know anyone else who covers and our church doesn't teach it.

you'd be surprised Stacy. You really would. I have had many christian women who are surprised to find that I cover because of 1 cor...not just for fashion.
If you're not making a big deal of it, and especially if you are like Stina and me who color-cooridinate to our outfits, then most people probably won't even know.
I'm forever getting compliments on my scarves, but very few "why do you wear that?"

LOL, that is too funny. Ok, so like I said before I have never heard of this until these forums, and I am pretty sure that I have not seen women in my church who do cover, but I am going to take notice for the next few weeks. But I did ask my DH what he thought of it, and I just asked about covering my head in church, and he was like "Why" So if it is partly because of honoring your husband, what if your husband could care less or was flat out against it like mine was. I didn't ask if I could, I asked what he would think if I did. My head is pretty plain to begin with so I was actually surprised when he reacted the way he did. But thanks for the explination. I am sure that head covering is not in my immediate future, but thank you for telling me why.

I do have to say that these forums have given me so many things to think about. Some not so good, but that is for another thread.

Well, that link I posted said that it is commanded, and we should do what is commanded over what our husbands say, but i dunno if I agree with that in the headcovering sense.

In my congregation, most women cover for the liturgical part of the service. For worship and praise, they take it off. In fact a lot of them take it on and off during the service. On for praying parts, off for others. That would drive me nuts personally so I just pin it on and leave it on, since I don't want to mess with it that much, lol! So I am the only one who is covered the entire service.

Outside of service, I don't cover. When I visit my former congregation, I am the only one who covers there.
