I read it too and had questions, but now I can't remember them[8D]
One thing I wanted to ask, does anyone know the history of when women STOPPED covering their heads? Am I allowed to ask that? Not wanting to debate, just interested in the history of it.

IIRC, the 50's-60's is when women really stopped covering. My mom can remember she, her mom and sisters wearing coverings to church on sundays (they were catholic) and can also remember when the pope at the time said it was "no longer necessary"
That's also when the feminist movement started gaining real momentum, so that probably had a lot to do with it as well.
Maggie would probably know a bit more detail than I do.

Ryanne - I understand exactly how you feel. It's different for me because my whole church covers (and my church is rooted in a culture where head coverings are normal) so I'm not much help on what it's like being the only one that covers.

I do think that once you have explained to people in your church why you cover, people will get used to and understand and why it may be drawing attention in the beginning, it won't take long for it to go away. Especially if you are doing it modestly and not wearing hats with large flowers, birds, branches, shrubs and other things generally found in the wild on top.

As for when it stopped, like Sandy said, my mom still remembers women wearing hats in church when she was young. My husband says that back home women still cover their heads today, so it's not something that has completely stopped in the church, just in the North American church apparently. When I told my grandmother that I covered my head she was very happy because it was something that they were taught in Europe (and they continued in their church here in Canada - though I'm not sure if that church still practices it today.)

I'm also assuming that the stop of it has to do with feminism, and just the times, look at how many other worldly things have come into the church and changed things.

Ryanne, I CAN relate to being the only one who covers. I was the only one in our "old" church (that we just switched from) and I am the only one in the on-post chapel, at least in the protestant service, I've never seen the gospel or cath, so I dunno about there. It's truly not that bad. Since I was just wearing bandanas from walmart when I first started, no one gave me a second look. When I was wearing them all the time, one or two people asked, I was just honest and said, "I'm covering my hear" and that was the end of it.
Even when we went to cath mass with Justin's fam on block leave, I was STILL the ONLY one [8|]

Has anyone been to a church and been asked to REMOVE the cover????

I was at one where no one covered, and I remember my youth group leader telling the girls that we couldn't wear hats in the building.

Ryanne, I haven't cut my hair since I started covering. But, I think I'm gonna. If my hair don't count cuz it's cut, I got a covering, right? LOL I dunno. I haven't looked into the hair cutting part yet.

Christine, I'm guessing that the youth group leader was going along the same lines as a school, no hats in class. I bet if a girl spoke up and said she was covering for religious reasons, the leader probably would have been fine with it.

Christine - what kind of hats were they wearing? I can understand asking them to remove it if it's just for fashion. If I were to explain why I wear a covering and they still ask me to remove it, then I would be upset and wouldn't attend. But I can't see someone still asking you to remove a religious covering.

At one point it was brought up that Corinthians calls women to cover their heads. If I remember correctly the youth leader, I'm assuming unprepared with a response, said since the church doesn't openly practice it to not cover while in youth group. If girls wore hats, then boys would want to wear hats. And then it would be an issue.

There was one woman who did cover her head in the service. A little lacy doily that she pinned on top.

I've never known anyone who has been a cover-er outside of this community. This is a very foreign topic to me. However, I am learning lots. That's why I subbed to this thread.

I know in Germany it is not uncommon to see hats/coverings in churches...even in touristy places where churches are open to the tourists and local areas during the week people still put hats on when they enter.

Thanks for that Sandy and Lexie. I would of thought it had stopped before then. I have never seen it in any churches here in Australia, they are usually asking you to remove your hats as its inpolite to wear them inside! I did go to a church once with a friend, there was only like 7 people in the congregation and the woman and her 2 daughters that were there wore scarves, as did my friend (she said me and my other Christian friend didn't have to but she told us we should wear skirts). I don't know what denomination it was, but I didn't feel comfortable there at all. So that's the only time I have seen it. Even here in the sort of "older" denomination churches I haven't seen it.

In the UK the only churches that stil practice this thread's kind of head covering are some Open Brethren, all Closed Brethren and certain cults. The latter two usually also go in for the women not being allowed to cut their hair, or to have it styled except to wear it in plaits; they also have to wear dark/muted plain colours such as dark blue, brown, beige etc, and have to wear sandals or flat shoes with thick stockings or socks. They have to wear calf or full length skirts with plain blouses and cardigans. And no jewellery or make up. The headcoverings have to be plain scarves, nothing bright or pretty.

The only kind of "head covering" that is practiced in mainstream churches (especially Anglican, Catholic, Methodist) is more hat-wearing for the sake of it, in order to look nice and impress. In Victorian times it was the women of rich families who wore hats to church - the fancier the better. Dressing up in your "Sunday best" usually involved wearing a hat, for the women. But it wasn't for the reasons being cited here.

I wore a pretty scarf with roses on it to church today. Maggie has one just like it. I know because I made it for her [8D]
My hubby saw me on the webcam too. He's grown to really love my covering.

I second this one.
I put on a covering when I got dressed this morning (lasted until I got to my first stop of the day), and Dh commented "nice hat" when he walked by. [8D]

The only time my husband ever mentioned covering to me was when we first met and we were studying together, and now he talks about it only if I ask him questions. I think the only time he would say something to me is if I wasn't wearing one in church.

He's never really given me any feedback on it until recently. We were talking about the comment made by someone else in church that I should be wearing a hat instead of a scarf. Dh said "I don't see what his point is, you would think that a scarf would be more of a covering than a hat." (btw...my husband is a wonderful man of very few words.) When he said that, I knew that all along he was happy with my decision to fully cover my head, whereas before I thought he didn't really care much either way.

I cover my head and wear only dresses/skirts. (don't have any recent pics though) I usually wear my hair up in a bun with a lace bun cover on it. I wear it all day and no one has ever commented on it. Luckily I am able to wear skirts and my bun cover at my new part time job. Even there, no one has ever said anything about it.

I do not cut my hair either. And both my daughters have never had a hair cut, except for trims and the oldest has bangs. My hair is to my waist, as is both my girls. DH prefers long hair and it has never been a problem.

I don't wear only long drab dresses/skirts. But most are modest and cover what needs to be covered. My DH thinks I look funny in pants now if I try them on. I have worn pants to work but only because my skirt was dirty and they have to be either black or khaki. My daughters usually are in dresses or skirts too. Only when they are on their bikes or playing do they get to wear long shorts.

I do not wear make up either unless DH asks me to when we go out sometimes. I wear very little jewelry too. I have one earring in the upper part of my ear that I never take out and I wear my wedding rings. I am sensitive to things around my neck, so no necklaces for me. This is a far contrast from how I was a few years back. I had 10 earrings, a nose ring, and my tongue pierced!!

I used to wear revealing clothes and did up my face and hair. It was just to attract attention and now I know better!!! I don't need the kind of attention that draws!!

Anyway, just my little piece on covering! lol

Robin - at what age did you start dressing your daughters in mostly skirts?

My husband and I somewhat disagree on this one (though I think he'll end up going with how I feel) and I definitely disagree with the church on this one.

For those who have daughters....will you expect them to cover? At what age would you like them to start covering?

My girls have been in dresses/skirts probably from walking age. My family knows I don't allow my girls to wear pants (unless bike riding or other outside things). So for birthdays and such they know to not buy pants.

I do not expect my girls to cover when they get older as I think it is a personal choice and conviction. If they choose to that is fine and same if they don't. I would hope that they would however keep in dresses/skirts but I know rebellion can be a thing in the future. I just keep praying and God will work it all out as He sees fit.
