Ryanne - I understand exactly how you feel. It's different for me because my whole church covers (and my church is rooted in a culture where head coverings are normal) so I'm not much help on what it's like being the only one that covers. I do think that once you have explained to people in your church why you cover, people will get used to and understand and why it may be drawing attention in the beginning, it won't take long for it to go away. Especially if you are doing it modestly and not wearing hats with large flowers, birds, branches, shrubs and other things generally found in the wild on top. As for when it stopped, like Sandy said, my mom still remembers women wearing hats in church when she was young. My husband says that back home women still cover their heads today, so it's not something that has completely stopped in the church, just in the North American church apparently. When I told my grandmother that I covered my head she was very happy because it was something that they were taught in Europe (and they continued in their church here in Canada - though I'm not sure if that church still practices it today.) I'm also assuming that the stop of it has to do with feminism, and just the times, look at how many other worldly things have come into the church and changed things.
