Okay, so I have been wearing a wide headband on the occasions in which I am going to be praying in a 'public' kind of way -- I'm on our church's prayer team and doing prayerwalking. I was talking to dh about it a while ago and I mentioned that I felt like it was easier to participate more fully when I was wearing the headband. My problem is that the band can get really annoying and sometimes causes a headache for me... I think I might do it more often if I could figure out something else.

myka, you could try a long rectangle type of scarf and wrap in like a headband. You can make it as wide as you like...I usually pull our one layer of "wrap" to the widest on the top of my head. It's softer and won't give headaches...I can't wear headbands!

I've thought about that; I guess I will have to see whether it works or not--I don't have scarves or anything like that.

Mama has a good idea Myka. I don't like headbands either, they pinch. So I usually take one of my tiechels and fold it into a triangle (to the tie is longer) and then tuck the pointed ends underneath. Looks like a wide headband. Much more comfortable. Sandy

I too am looking into this further. I first read that passage a few years ago, but at the time did not start covering even though I felt led to. I don't go to a church that practices this or even teaches it. I am already so different than everyone else at church and feel like I stick out like a sore thumb. This would just make it worse. And if I did cover, it would be all the time, not just at church. I'd also like to switch to wearing just dresses, but in my job that would be really hard to do. I would have to go to dresses when I am not at work only. So hard. We had a mennonite couple visit my church a couple weeks ago with one of our members and this got me convicted again about these changes I need to make in my life.

Jess, you'd probably be surprised at how few would notice. I started covering and most of my friends just thought I liked scarves LOL. Especially if you use 'trendier' things.

Does anyone else have trouble keeping a tichel on? I usually have to put it on right before we leave for church, then go into the bathroom when we get there (about an hour drive) and fix it, then go back to the bathroom as soon as service is over (about an hour and a half) and fix it again. I do have bangs that I leave out, so it may be that the bangs are making it sit too far back on my head. I usually tie my hair all up into a bun inside the tichel, that keeps it on a little better than just tying it over my loose hair. Any ideas?

from what you say, it's probably too far back on your head to sit alone. Try some bobby pins or cute clips to help it stay on

you might also try using straight pins...I know it sounds scary and weird...but they work well...you pin them through the top of the piece and under your hair and back through the piece...so that the sharp end is NOT near your scalp....kind of like how you pin on a corsage. It works really well for kapps, and kippets.

Today is the first day I wore a covering for the sake of wearing a covering to church. I had to wear a hat today because I didn't have any other thing I could use. I need to make some. Anyway, the Lord spoke to me from the pastor's lips today (his wife does not cover). The sermon was on loving the Bible and not being ashamed of it or its message. It was on being willing to defend it and so on. Very applicable for me. I saw a few people looking, but the most anyone said was "Nice hat." I dread seeing their reaction when I wear an actual covering. I wish there were other women going it with me. I'm single so I don't even have a husband's support. It's good to know God is on my side, but it is quite frightening too. *sigh* I could really use some encouragement. Has anyone made covering for themself and have patterns they'd be willing to share?

I saw the tiechels on a website. They're pretty, but I'm not sure they're for me. I kinda like the look of the charity veil or a snood... or maybe just a triangle veil?

if you want to start slow, you can always go to walmart and get some of their really cute square bandanas. They're only a dollar each, and you can get several colors. Then, just tie them on in a triangle and I bet no one will think anything different Sandy

You could also just do a regualr scarf and twist it into a bun. I do that with my long hair, although I don't cover it is nice on days when I don't feel like doing a thing to my hair.

I take an 8 inch dinner plate and trace it onto a piece of lace and cut that out. I then sew on trim...either just pretty binding or lace trim. That is what I use for my church coverings. You can use a 10 inch dinner plate as well..that makes it hang more like a kerchief when pinned on. I also tat lace circles for coverings.

Ok, nobody I know right now wears any sort of head covering, although a couple of ladies I knew when I was in high school did. I'm pretty sure that my hair can be a distraction, though.... Last Sunday we were watching a slide show in Sunday school, and, when it was over, the lady behind me commented that she was sitting behind me and thinking how my hair was such a pretty color. I wasn't exactly sure how to react, but it made me uncomfortable. My hair is an unusual color, sort of red/gold (strawberry blond, I guess, but more yellow than pinkish-looking), and I usually leave it loose because I don't have much skill in fixing it. I don't want people thinking about it in church! I think I would rather cover it, but I'm afraid to draw attention. The church story is an extreme example, but people do occasionally mention my hair color, and I do tend to feel awkward about it. I do like that I can put a little less effort into clothes and feel pretty anyway, though (and I wonder if it might be part of why people don't usually notice that I'm overweight). What advice can you ladies give me? It would sort of defeat the purpose of removing distraction to wear anything too obvious, wouldn't it? Like I said, no one I know covers their hair, but when I see women with their covering things on in a store or something, I always feel kind of embarrassed (not for them for having them, but for me for not having them). I usually am not the sort to care much about sticking out, so why is this different? I mean, I used to wear sunbonnets a lot just because I liked them. I'm known for being one of the most modestly dressed girls around, in general, so it might not be that out-of-character, but who starts something like that at age 22? My school has a dress code that doesn't allow hats in most buildings, except for "religious coverings." I don't think I've ever seen any obvious coverings, but there are quite a few girls that seem to wear a lot of scarves.... I never thought about them possibly covering their heads for that reason (hey, we're college students! and the school is a charismatic one), but I'd never know. I think I'd feel too awkward to ask. I'm not very stylish in general, so I'd have a hard time matching things to my outfits and making it look natural. The only thing I have handy is a pink-flowered sunbonnet, which I might well wear with casual clothes when the weather is warmer (like I said, I just like sunbonnets; I used to have a black one, too, but I lost it, and before that a blue one, but I put that through the wash and ruined it, hence buying the black and the pink ones). Now THAT would sure stand out, wouldn't it? Also, I have little time to make things and little money to buy them. And my mother sometimes freaks out when I tell her how much I hate to wear pants. I'm pretty sure I would have no support if I tried something like wearing a head covering. But something in me wants to....

When I have tried covering, I used something that looked like a bandanna, only crochet. I just have one in black, and one in white, and they pretty much go with everything without standing out too much. Bandannas can be had for pretty cheaply- check Michaels for a good deal. I say if you want to, then do it. People may not notice as much as you think.

What about while trying to look "professional"? I used to be known as quite the hat person, so I could wear pretty much anything on casual days and nobody would raise an eyebrow--well, no more than usual, since I already wear t-shirts with skirts and tennis shoes, odd color combinations, strange hats (I've even made them out of pipe-cleaners), sunbonnets, etc. (Just watch; I'll start covering and give the rest of you a terrible fashion reputation just by the rest of the stuff I wear.... ) I like the bandannas idea, but I don't think I could pull it off at work, etc. Also, my school is Charismatic and my (fairly new to me) church is Presbyterian. Seriously, people are going to wonder. Not that I'm usually the sort to worry about that, but still. I don't suppose a bandanna would go at all with church dresses or work skirts and high heels.... I'm not even sure my usually over-supportive best guy friend would go along with this.... I guess it would be interesting to see if he still likes me. Most of my girl friends are weird enough in their own ways that I don't think they'd care in the least. (That means that they wouldn't give me a hard time about it, but they wouldn't exactly support it, either. They'd just chalk it up to "Oh, yeah, you always were weird.") I have no idea what my parents would say, but I know my sister would think I was embarrassing her.

Well I can't speak to the looking professional because my standard work attire is jeans since I spend my days down on the floor with kids. There are styles of covering that are more formal looking. If you go to thr Cover your hair website (I think thats what it is, don't remember for sure) they have lots of different styles.

a long scarf that can be tied would look very professional IMHO. I have some tiechels, and they're light, pretty and easy to tie. Very nice looking. Rather 'dressy' LINK <--here's a site with different scarves LINK <--this is my fave! Lots of lovely ways to tie

So, I just went to Wal Mart and bought two scarves (black and white) and two bandannas (pink and green). Now I can cover my hair up if I feel like it.... I'm thinking it's probably best to forget about it while exercising or at work; I have my hair put up anyway at those times and there's no way I can make a covering look natural. I don't suppose anybody ever does cover their hair up just because they feel like trying it? (Ok, I can be honest here, can't I? I'm not sure I'm not supposed to, so I'm willing to give it a try.) I'm going to have the hardest time explaining if anybody asks.... "Oh, I thought I'd see what happened if I covered my hair up for a while!" The scarves are too long; I can't figure out a way to put them on that doesn't make me look Muslim. I think the bandannas are cute, though, and I kind of like the way they keep my hair out of the way. Still, I don't see how I can pull it off at church, which seems to be the point for most people. On second thought, I just figured out a kind of cool thing to do with the scarves-- I've got the black one sort of wrapped around my head once at full width and then once or twice over that all bunched up, with the short ends knotted just over my right ear. Is asymmetrical ok? I might actually be able to pull that off at work; it's kind of cute. Oh, and I'm just messing around with this stuff in front of the mirror in my room; I haven't actually done anything in particular with my hair, and I'm not at all sure yet that I'd dare wear any of this stuff in public. It feels nice and cozy, though.

I did it for a little while just to try it. For a while I would put one on when driving (I drive a lot for work), and take it off when I got out of the car. Look at some of Blessedmama's links for different ways to wrap a scarf. Mine actually make me itch behind my ears. I'm weird though.
