Jennifer--no, I haven't seen your get up and go. I suspect it's hanging out with mine.

School is almost done for the day. I just have a bit of grading to do. Ds3 did a cool experiment today involving a maginfying glass and flashlight. An upside down image gets projected on the screen. Next up for him is explaining why!

I find this really funny because we have a pop up camper that won't pop up right now. The cranking system broke & we just haven't had the money or time to get it fixed!

this one had a broken cable that honey fixed and it cranked up but sheared off some "pin" that moves to allow it to crank DOWN. He said he could probably fix it himself BUT he doesn't have the time right now. We only gave 500.00 for it and got it to use here as a Mother In Law Suite and for occasional trips to the Beach where we have a place we can camp for 15.00 a night. It has a NICE AC unit in it that is about 500.00 worth itself... It has been UP with extra 2x4 uprights(better safe than sorry) for 3 months. It has been used 5 times in that time frame right where it is.

Kennewick high school is across the street from the library. Well, the high school has asked the library to ban students during 'school hours'.

No, no, don't let them go learn something while we are trying to teach them! LOL

I understand their reasoning--they don't want kids to skip class to hang out at the library. But, come on, the library? And what about lunch and free period? And don't the teachers take roll, anyway, so they will know who wasn't in class? If I skipped without permission (and I only did it once) I got saturday school. If a kid skips it doesn't matter where he goes instead, but we should all be happy if he goes to the library, lol.

So if the library enforced that request, then Nate would be banned too wouldn't he? That's ridiculous. I take my kids to the library during school hours because that is when the parking garage is less crowded and so is the library. We can browse at leisure.

Today is our last weekday of no school. Dh& Ds are with MIL today, so it's just Dd and me. On Monday, we start up school again and a bit of a schedule.

Goodness, Jenn, in my old state the libraries were designated Safe Places. Kids were taught that if you are in any kind of trouble, look for a Safe Place sign and the people there will help you.

That would be hard to do if kids aren't allowed on the premises.

The sewing book for boys is cute, Judii! But I think it would take a bit more studying beyond that to make it as a designer.

(I thought it was so sweet that one of the designers on that reality show where they compete for $100,000 to start their own line- aargh what is it called?- one of the finalists learned to sew from his mommy. I thought that was awesome.)

It's a different library from the one we use, and the librarians where we go know my kids by name (well, if they didn't, the boys' pictures are still on their wall! LOL) and wouldn't kick them out. But what about the Running Start, alternative ed, homeschooled kids in Kennewick? I can only hope they have some sort of method for disallowing only the one group of kids...but I'm thinking that probably isn't the case.

Jerry just called!

he is in Kuwait--- they will head across the boarder around 4am his time(it is like 11pm there now). it was good to hear his voice, even if it was tired and weary sounding. He has had less than 4 hours sleep the last 24. please continue to remember him in your prayers.

Wow, Jenn, I sure hope they don't take on that role as truant officers. It doesn't sound to me like something the library really wants to be in on.

Thanks for the prayers for him. he sounded so tired. I almost feel bad for being so HAPPY he called. I know he has been there for a bit and that he has very likely been nodding and grunting during briefings worryin' about how/when he was gonna get in touch with me to let me know he was there and safe. He ended up using his gov CC to make the call. 2 minutes... I wonder how much that is gonna cost uncle sam?

mom24,

He is over on a 2 week long pre-deployment site survey mission. He should be home the 14th. The unit starts signing into active duty on the 21/22. They do the going away bash on that friday then leave for Ft Bragg.

I ordered Nate's CAT test yesterday. I have never done the test-at-home thing. We always used a teacher to assess the kids. Anyway, it's supposed to take a bit over five hours, so obviously we won't do it all in one day. His and others, how do you handle it?

Jennifer--we do Iowa Basics. It is broken down by subject, then each subject broken down even more. Each test is timed. We figure out ahead of time what we would like to get done each day. We generally test no more than 2hrs/day. Although, if it is super easy stuff--science/social studies/geography--then they might push it a bit. The older guys generally do very well. Ds4 is the one what I really have to watch for fatigue. We will finish that test, then take a break, sometimes until the next day.

So on these tests are they testing actual knowledge of those subjects, or is it a read-and-answer-the-question thing? Because we don't follow the scope and sequence.

Nate is just being bratty today and I have had it! Good thing he's going away for the weekend, lol.

IME, those subjects are more a test of reasoning, logic skills, and chart reading than of actual subject knowledge. But then I haven't taken them in a while.

Tests are multi-choice. Does your kid know how to think? If so, he'll ace it. Don't worry about not covering what you were "supposed" to cover. We don't follow a scope and sequence and my guys test grade levels above every year.

Yeppers- multiple choice on the CAT-E. rote skills are all they test. as with any multiple choice test 2 answers are in left field 1 is right and 1 is close.

Jerry managed to call back 10 minutes after we were disconnected. He is well. he said they drive on the right side of the road in Kuwait. That everything is some shade of brown. That he is looking forward to getting into transient quarters so he can sleep.

He asked about our hurricane. We are not expecting things to get up til after midnight here. I am putting the kids to bed at 10pm.

He asked to be put on speaker phone and chatted a bit with each of the kids. I cannot wait til he gets somewhere where he can have better communications.

I uploaded a photo of my TEST run for my Photo Color & Composition project. the commets and caption tell more about it HERE (please take a look see and let me know what you think.) so I won't go into all the details in the thread here. I still have 3 rolls of film out for development and a 4th in the camera waiting for me to come up with 2 more shots.

I am excited to be able to make this come together.

I have a shot of Jerry and the kids on the last roll of film that I simply cannot wait to get my greedy hands on.
