My dh has MS. He has a lot of pain with it, mostly in his feet. Nothing worked. His doctor put him on Lyrica. It was night and day for him. It was specifically designed for fibro.

Status: offline 		Kim, do the twins have a aide or two in class? I am surprised they only have one teacher for that many students. I'd think they would have another teacher and then an aide. She can't be accomplishing much with the students with that ratio.

Mike wants to work with computers but beyond that he hasn't a clue. With his dyslexia he couldn't program or be an IT guy. I think he'd be terrific at repair or putting them together. When he did that career assessment thing last year (all the juniors take it) he answered positive to anything to do with building or putting things together and very negative to anything that had to do with office type work.

I did get something in the mail late yesterday from the resource teacher. It's a seminar. The teacher is going to attend one and then there is one for parents, Sept 20 something. I definitely need to register for it.

She has an aide but even at that she is still overwhelmed.

As for your son, if he chooses vocational school it's not a step down from college, just a different path. We need people to fix computers and build things just as much as we need teachers, nurses or whatever career that you need a college degree for.

Status: offline 		I went to X's student led parent/teacher conference this afternoon. We went over all her assignments/topics for the year and I got to have a good chat with her teacher (really lovely lady who is leaving the school at the end of the year - J and X have both been really blessed by having her as a teacher).

J and X did something really sweet this morning. J told me he had to get to school early this morning for something so I got them there about ten minutes before our usual time only to find out that the reason J had to get to school early this morning was because he'd heard me say I had a really big day at work yesterday and needed to catch up on a fair bit today.

Status: offline 		OK - I had a long, boring post about me. I deleted it. I know I may need to turn to meds in the future, but I'm not there yet. Yesterday was a bad day and it doesn't bode well for the winter. I did well on a muscle relaxer way back when. How does the Lyrica work? I'd rather treat the cause of the symptoms than that result.

Open house

My kids are doing well in school. I hate open house. HATE IT. I didn't snap at anyone I didn't birth. I had to pull DeeDee out of the room because she talked so loud that other parents had trouble having conversations with their children and Poppa had to write a letter - she was showing me around without him and I didn't think she should talk that loud the second time.

I corrected her spelling. In front of several teachers and pointed out that SPELLING MATTERS. And, they did time consuming activities (write a letter, walk around the room and take a quiz, put you painted handprint on this paper) and I wonder how you were supposed to do it with multiple kids in the elem school.

Then, DeeDee got a nose bleed and sat for 15 minutes, which killed the time thing for us.

When we got to the high school, BigBee stopped to talk to a friend so I went to his teachers without him. I set him up with a meeting and an extra class before he came in the door. I told him I'd do it if he didn't. Then, when he showed me 'where he puts his homework' I told him he wasn't in second grade any more and he should be able to tell me insightful things about the classroom and the course and then be able to present me to his teacher by NAME and relationship. I told him that TWICE before it sunk in. When the second teacher said, 'no, this isn't second grade, that's for sure' he knew I was right.

His band teacher is pompous, I expect someone to tell me the bus driver is a pedafile (sp) someday and that 6th grade teacher gives me the CREEPS. He knuckle-fived DeeDee and I had to surpress the urge to tell him to keep his hands off my daughter. I've talked about the guy before - he just raises my hackles and I don't know why.

Honors course are not going to have any greater weight than a grade level course when it comes to college admissions especially if he is struggling and not doing well in them. Ty is taking honors courses and even a college level course as a freshman this year. I would rather he get good grades and keep his GPA up then to take advanced courses, get poor grades and hurt his GPA and begin to get discouraged.

We had our elementary flower and garden show today. Aryn had a Cleome, Ethan had an Asparagus plant and Zoe had some Zinnias and a Spider Plant. Aryn's Cleome took first place in that cut flower category and Ethan's and both of Zoe's took red ribbons! Aryn's first place flower will be going to the City-wide flower and garden show this weekend!

I also screwed up BIG time! I forgot to pay our overdue gas bill this past week and thus we were shut off yesterday. We didn't realize it til this morning, when Ty came out of the shower complaining that he couldn't get the hot water to work. So we had to not only pay our bill but a reconnect fee and a deposit to cover our projected use for the next couple of months. And it was all my fault. Brian doesn't typically ask me to take care of the bills so when he does it's usually a big deal and he's overwhelmed with school and work and such and I take care of it. I just missed this one. And I'm kicking myself!

But I kinda am proud of myself too! I went down to a neighbors because after driving by their house for weeks and drooling over their pear trees and all the pears I couldn't help myself! I talked to him and he told me to take as much as I wanted since he's the only one in his house that eats them! Yippie! I''m going to be putting up pears tonight and all day tomorrow! Now to figure out if I can freeze pears. I need a bigger freezer!

He's not struggling in his classes; he always makes straight A's. He just has a high volume of take home work. Now his trackmeets are on Wednesdays at 4 so I'm not sure how we're going to balance that. I think they have warm ups and stuff after school until the meet starts. If that's the case then he definitely won't get his homework done until after the meet. If they don't have warmups then he can just work on it until it's time for the meet.

He had a meet scheduled for yesterday but the temperature hit over 100 degrees so they canceled it. Right after they canceled it, it rained and the temp dropped about 15 degrees.

I'm just thinking of studying on the way there and back (or picking him up to get him home to work sooner if necessary)

Do other students have more study halls? BigBee made a point of having one so he didn't fall behind.

Status: offline 		The first five meets are here in town. The rest are about 20 miles away. I'm going to have him work on his work on the way to the out of town meets and then on his way back.

His middle school doesn't offer study hall so that's not an option. *sigh*

We'll figure it out, but you guys have definitely given me some good ideas to start with.

Status: offline 		I'm glad he's making great grades! I'm just saying that if the load becomes overwhelming it's something to look into.

Ty has a study hall every day this term and that is a BIG help! He doesn't have one next semester tho, unless we decide he needs it and we make him wait til next year to take his advanced theatre class or guitar lessons.

I do know that during play season here Ty struggled with homework last year. Those 6-8 weeks were a battle! I guess it's nice to know that the season will eventually come to an end.

Speaking of Ty. He and I were standing here talking today and he missed the bus. Stepped out the door and it was turning the corner already. So he and I jumped into the car and raced down the road and were able to catch the bus a couple stops down the way. Whew! Only a 4 mile round trip instead of the 28 mile one it would have been had I had to go all the way into town and the school.

The bus driver just laughed at me when I put the little guys on the bus later.

BigBee asked his guidence counsellor how to get one and her reply was 'we don't have study halls in senior high.' He lost so much respect for her with that statement because he was sitting with senior high kids in his study hall.

And, he has a study hall and USSR (sustained silent reading - but he adds the U to it) where he can read his book report books. I haven't seen much homework at all, yet. Or he did until I took one away from him last night for his independent learning class.

Status: offline 		Hey everybody!!! For once I don't have anything to complain about!!! YAY!!

We went to open house at the highschool yesterday and all of the teachers were great. We are struggling to get him through the differences in the language so that he can understand what he is reading but I think that will come later.

I put Jake in AP math because I don't think he is being challanged enough and wanted to bump up his science, but maybe next year.

My girls are doing great so far and no complaints from any of their teachers. YAY again!!!!!

So we are in the full swing of things. My bowling league started yesterday morning. I decided to do something fun for me this year. My Thu. morning Bible study started today and my Friday class starts tomorrow. Soccer has been going on a few weeks now and dance started on Mondy so off we go.............

That is one thing I appreciate about the ages J and X are now. Dh and I deep cleaned the carpet in the main living areas yesterday. While we were doing that J and X cleaned the entirety of the rest of the house. The only jobs leftover for today is for dh and I to clean up our office area (something they could not have done anyway) and vacuum bedrooms.

One more week of school before we send J and X for a two week holiday with their grandparents. I'm really not sure how it will go. Dh's parents aren't as kid-friendly as mine. They love the kids, they're just not great with kids.

Today we're having X's birthday party. We were going to have it the weekend after her birthday but then it would have fallen on Father's Day, meaning that many of her friends would not have been able to come.

But I'm here now!

The girls and I were gone the better part of today. Today was the city-wide flower and garden show and Aryn's flower only got an Honorable Mention here but one of her classmates took best in show for his third year plant! He was pretty excited as he had no clue! Other kids from our school took first, second and third place ribbons too.

Tonight however we learned some rather upsetting news. I had phoned a lady I've known for years, but we've never been really close, except while we were homeschooling and when we attended the same church. Ty and her youngest dd were good friends since they were about 4 years old. Hope had a heart condition since birth and despite several surgeries was never fully healed. Anyway I had phoned her as another parent I know is looking for a homeschooling mentor and I knew this woman would be perfect as she helped me get started out on the foot. She calls me back tonight and was surprised we were still in the area as she had been told that we had moved. She then told me that Hope had passed away this past January. She was sorry that no one had contacted us about the funeral or anything. I talked for a bit longer and got numbers exchanged. I then walked over to Ty's girlfriend's grandparents house where Ty is hanging out because I figured he needed to know earlier rather then later, and that it would be good for him to have a friend to lean on. I was right in what I predicted his reaction would be. His girlfriend and I sat with him for awhile and I answered as many questions as I could. He is furious at not knowing about this and is furious that the kid that goes to his school that I guess never mentioned anything. I think between his girlfriend and I that we have him convinced that going to the gravesite will at least allow him to say his good byes. I have a feeling I'm going to have a long night tonight with him.

I can't figure out who would have told them that we had moved. That just doesn't make any sense either. But it really doesn't matter at this point.

Ty's due home in a little bit, so we'll talk more then if he wants too.

Donna, I'm right there with you! I have to ask multiple times to get kids to move and do what they are asked. Hubby says it ONCE and the kids are in motion before he finishes the request.

When I was about 18yo I went through a similar situation.

My mother is one of those people who reads the obits. She was going through them in the Sydney Morning Herald and came across a name. It was my friend's older sister, B. B had been sick since a baby with a hole in her heart and had been in Sydney awaiting a heart transplant when she overdosed on the meds which were supposed to be keeping her alive.

It was a terrible shock to hear the news secondhand like that. And because the family were all out of town dealing with the funeral etc (they had originally come from Sydney and so B was buried there close to all their extended family) I couldn't even contact them for about two weeks.

Sean is doing much better with his English. I think that when he gets nervous, he has problems. But today he spent the day with my husband. They went fishing on a river, then took the canoe out. They were gone all day. That gave me time to get some cleaning done. I got to shampoo the carpet in my family room, did the laundry, dishes, and cleaned the living room. I got all of the sheets and bedding washed, and my floors are vaccumed. So I feel pretty accomplished.

The school is not on my "happy" list at the moment, but hopefully the next few weeks will change that. I posted in the homeschool support all that is going on there because I am pretty much doing that with him in one of his classes. It is just the vocabulary that he is having issues with in his government class. All of those words are foreign to him so he is having trouble keeping up because of that. But you can read those posts over there. I was looking for some advice and got a really good idea over there so we are going to try it.

Status: offline 		I've got a sick one at home today. Zoe's had a couple of canker sores in her mouth for about 4 days now and they are just not getting any better. She is miserable and not eating very well at all. Then on top of that she has a fever that came on last night. We've got that down and we are hoping to keep it down. She's out in the living room right now with glass of water and a movie. I think I'm going to try mashed potatoes for her lunch. A school lunch would have been impossible for her.

Popcorn season starts this weekend, followed closely even overlapping Candy and nut season for Zoe's girl scouts and then shortly after that in basketball season closely followed by cookie season for the girls. And I wonder why people turn and RUN when I walk into a room between now and February!

Status: online 		I almost had a sick one at home today and would probably get a call to come get him except that he hates missing school. Allergy season and I didn't get his new Singulair prescription yet. Oops...he said he didn't feel well tonight and this morning has a nice cough. I did call the doctor to get his Singulair today though, so hopefully we can catch it before it gets into his lungs.

Noah hasn't had too much homework since that one night he had a lot. I really think that night was because he messed around in school, because I told him if he kept getting that much, I was going to call his teacher and find out what is going on. So...that would have meant I would find out he was messing around, and so he decided to shape up and do his work. At least that's my theory...we'll see...

I have noticed his teacher puts a number grade on every single piece of paper the kids turn in. Not sure if she uses them all as part of their grade. I need to find that out because if so, I don't agree with that at all. Seatwork and homework are where it should be okay to make mistakes if you don't understand, and quizzes and tests are for grading. At least that's how I think it should be...maybe I'm wrong?

BOE meeting tonight...it'll be Esther's first.

Status: offline 		Popping in to say our kids have their first early dismissal of the year. Several area districts were delayed or closed due to power outages from the wind last night. The area had gusts up to 79mph, which would be hurricane force, but no rain.

We lost a tree, but there were lots on the road. Poppa said that it is weird that the same storm that caused Havana and Houston to lose power cost us ours as well.

And, I had to go to the laundrymat last night. I would have got there sooner, but I started supper for tonight which took 1/2 hour. I ended up with 3 loads that weren't dry when the power went out there. And, supper was barely salvageable because we didn't want to put HOT food in the fridge when there was no power. I was making soup and had good broth, but I pulled the meat out and left the broth to be thrown away.

Oh Mbee, that's a shame. :( I have a gas stove and it has come in handy a few times when I had dinner in the oven when the power went out.
