Personally, I am scared for us because we are taking Him for granted, and some of these songs and the way that we interpret them show that. Speaking concerning the way most folks in regards to what they say Jesus is; is not reflected in them compared to what the Bible says He is; and both were included. The writer included in the lyrics; by implying a plea for someone to show the real Jesus….which I believe means.... in themselves... And then in between the writer compared and provided what the Bible says about that recognition I found the video on You Tube to be very explanatory and very good actually! I am agreeing with you, LG...my plea is for us to discover who Jesus is without looking for song lyrics to justify it completely... we need a personal relationship with the savior... BUT, let us not discredit the Holy Spirit. Remember, Jesus left and gave us the Holy Spirit until His return...

I always laugh a little about the 'feminization of the church.' We're hardly allowed to preach, and in many cases be deacons, let alone write the music (check the composers above..almost all are male) and commit mind control. Perhaps the problem is that women have come to expect adoration as part of the courtship/being in love process. Perhaps in trying to appeal to people, church music has become more simplified in words and melody. Perhaps the increase in the charismatic church has meant more focus in worship music on feelings and how we experience God. Because we have a limited vocabulary it comes out similar to how we experience that other overwhelming force...love. I think it's probably a mixture of the above, plus other factors within the CCM industry. Personally I've never heard of any of the artists/composers quoted above other than Ray Boltz. I think we're going to need some better-known examples before we can even define this.

Orthodox Jews read it during Passover and believe it is the entrance into the Holy of Holies believing that God is the Husband to Israel. They don't exclude the romatic language from the book. Don't try and put into earthy thinking God's romancing the soul. It is not the same as tainted, carnal romance. 'nuff said.

Christ's bride is the church universal and eternal, not an individual believer. So the use of bridal to describe Christ's relationship with any believer is rather problematic, because of the connotation we usually associate with bridal. And it's not merely that Christ's love is not lustful. It is that it is not erotic. It has no eros in it. I believe eros to be made for humans (between male and female, as originally designed). I agree with other posters who have critiqued some of the lyrics posted in this thread as being overly sentimental and too tinged with human romance. That's taking the metaphor of Christ and His bride (the church) way too far... especially when we write (and sing) the lyrics from the point of an individual, rather than making them into an expression of the church at large. That's why I really appreciate the work of "new hymnologists" and writers like Keith Getty and his cowriters ("In Christ Alone," "The Power of the Cross," "Across the Land," and more).

[:D] In our current culture of victimhood, everyone wants to be loved just because of who they are. This can be the result of being a victim without love or being abused and having it called love...and when we present half the gospel, (ya know the part about Love and only Love) we get excited that we can have this perfect love without doing the work of having a fleshly relationship and in that, we err and think that Jesus is our girlfriend. Forget about the life of sacrifice, forget about confession/repentence...forget all that hard "one another" stuff. Jesus loves you...that's all that matters. Kum-bi-yah... [:'(] Worship is not about us and how we feel...it is about God and His glory. His cross, His mercy, His forebearance, His love, His...His...His...there is no me or I in there. And until we take us out of that picture, we will continue to see Jesus as this emotionally-charged man standing on the shore, with his hair blowing in the ocean breeze just waiting for our worship. The perfect representation of a Christian romance novel.

Well, based on what I've read here, I think I'll just listen to Southern Gospel music. There is none of the "Jesus is my girlfriend" trash in SG music.
