The great Farmers Almanac is predicting a extreme had Winter in the Midwest this year. Statistics show they are right about eighty percent of the time.

On the other hand the National Weather Service with all its forcasts and predictions and computer models shows the weather for this winter in the Midwest to be more than extremely Mild. So who's right? Who do you believe?

There are two Folk Lore indicators that I know of that predict the winter. One is the Oaktree. If the tree drops an over abundance of accorns for the squarels to store up than it's going to be a hard winter. If there is a small amount of accorns around the base of the tree it's going to be a mild winter.

Two is the Wooly Bear Caterpillar. If their furry coats are extra heavy and thick it's going to be a bad winter. If their coats are lighter it's going to be a mild winter.

I have not seen any wooly bear caterpillers yet, but I was out in the park today and the accorns were quite sparce. Not many on the ground. Maybe it's early yet. What is your take on this winter?

I'm hoping for a mild winter, BUT when we have a mild winter where I am it usually means more ICE. I don't like ice. Would be nice on the utility bills if it were a mild one. We've had a couple very busy squirrels in our neighborhood lately, and we did have an over abundance of mullberry's on our mullberry tree this summer, which the squirrels and birds just LOVE. Just so we have a little snow for Christmas, and I'll be happy!

Blessings,

Garsy

With the wat my dogs are "blowing coat" and the number of acorns at the dog park, we are in for a nasty Winter. But here in Raleigh, that means more ice than snow; except for the 20 inches of snow we got about ten years ago.

None- I'll believe it when I see it. For some reason, where I live -- it could be snowing in Ann Arbor then we don't get a snow flake here at all.
I don't mind the snow as long as I'm not driving but the ice...I'm with garsyt...I don't like ice.

The acorn thing is just not true. When I first moved into my home (which has 6 oaks on the north side) we were so inundated with acorns that we had 6" on the front walk at all times. That winter was one of the mildest in 10 years. I think oak trees go through cycles but I'm not sure it's related to the weather.

We had a harder winter last year (hardly any acorns) then we've had in the last 8 years. So I can see it going either way, very mild again or intensely cold and snowy.

I go to a church by M14 and live around the 96- I've seen snow stops by M14, 96 and 275--- the same goes with rain. I look at weatherbug and can actually see the rain coming but then by the time it hits that fwy intersection--- it's just dry.

Greetings,

So who's right? Who do you believe?

Weather wise....I believe God actually causes discrepancies in areas of contention that are going to be used against His will...

For example: the amount of rain going northward this summer in the mid-west blasted almost to a pin point accuracy; and marked The NAFTA Super Highway that is being built for the North American Union under the guidance of the EU,
http://www.eagleforum.org/column/2006/aug06/06-08-23.html
....now obliviously Katrina and the recent IKE has put a slight damper on it....and as we can see their are also tensions climbing in certain South American countries towards the USA

For a more detailed map of this so called NAFTA Super Highway, One can take a look at the map found here
http://www.eagleforum.org/topics/NAU/

quote]So who's right? Who do you believe?

Let’s keep an eye on the weather according to the NAFTA map and listen to the news concerning all those who are involved; and see if the weather will play any significant roles in these coming winter months, and compare it to the Folk Lore, the national weather service, the Almanacs and God…and see who is the closest .

We have more than enough firewood stored up so we can use the fireplace and lower the thermostat for the rest of the house. Therefore, I am predicting a very mild winter. If we had to buy our firewood, it would be a cold winter.

I've heard that you can rely on Farmer's Almanac about the winters. They've been more predictable than all the fancy weather equipment that meteorologists rely on.

I vote for the National Weather Service. I want a mild winter.

The Wooly Bears always seemed to know what they were doing. But I haven't seen a single one in a few years. Hmmm, those have all been mild winters. Maybe their coats were so thin I didn't even recognize them!

Let's see, that's two indicators of mild.

The acorns are hard to tell. I seem to have a lot this year but the tree isn't very old and maturing more each year.

But then, the highway is supposed to come right up I-35 so I guess we can expect a lot of rain and ice. Hey, there was a lot of bad ice and accididents on I-35 south of Lakeville last winter. Wonder if that was because of of the Super Highway.

I guess the old Folklore does not hold true in predicting the weather.

Wonder if the National Weather Service has a hidden copy of the Old Farmers Almanac?

Judging from their accuracy rate I'd say they have a very old copy.

Friend Hubby likes to say that seems to be the one career where you can mess up so often and still keep your job.

One thing for sure-- we'll be getting more salt this year. Last winter, with the amount of snow-- stores ran out of salt.

MNDot must be expecting a hash year. They've already predicted a shortage of salt for the roads.

Here in Indiana too! Only here they aren't worried about the supply - just the money to pay for it.

I'm predicting that our children will have more school delays and days off this winter if it does ANYTHING yucky.

Blessings,

Garsy

Not fun with the school delays or snow days. MN takes a lot to close anything down. We're getting 5 inches of snow today? The office is still open, just come on in. I don't remember too many delays or snow days in my school days either. I think I had about 2 total.
I'm grateful now that I work from home. My job let me start doing that last year so I don't have to drive to the office. I feel bad for those that have long commutes of 30-45 minutes to begin. I figure MNDOT could just sweep up all the sand & salt that's abandoned on the side of the roads and reuse it. It seems like they put way too much down in my neighborhood. It gets piled a couple inches high by the end of the season.

I'm hoping winter will be mild at least on Wednesday nights through Thursdays. I volunteer at my granddaughter's school which is 85 miles round trip. Leaving at 6 AM, the roads aren't necessarily that clear. Each year I start getting nervous right about now. But the Lord has blessed me with Traveler's Mercies for most of the eight years. I'm praying He'll continue.

I always loved the rare snow day when my girls were young. We'd do a jigsaw puzzle or something else fun.

hey Margie! My family and I used to live really close to you over in Burnsville (just off Highway 11)! And my baby brother and his wife now live in Eagan! I grew up in West central Minnesota (between Detroit Lakes and Brainerd) and I can't remember but a handful of days where school was completely canceled. Now there were a few where they released us early to get everyone home before dark on those bad days.

There have been days, here in Indiana, where I WISH the powers that be wouldn't be so wimpy! I guess it comes from growing up where we didn't freak out over a few inches and there were enough plows to get things done QUICKLY!

Blessings,

Garsy
