To add to the list of answers already given......many people fail to seek God for advice because of being more concerned with what others think about them then they care about what God thinks.

Lets face it, living the Christian life isn't easy! And most Christians don't want to fight, they want to be spoon fed!

I agree with you here Popsi. Easy it is not, because we have a hard time getting out of the way. It is difficult to always seek His will, especially if we can't hear it due to all the noise.

Oh and once they have the answers, most times they don't want to be responsible for applying them.

I agree with you here also, you are on a roll Popsi. Application. Obedience. Getting clear direction but not following, because it isn't what we want it to be. Not the answer we wanted, so we go to somewhere else for the advice.

And may I add, sometimes the response from God is not immediate, so we make our own decisions based on impulse, or need, and miss what The Lord tells us.

I don't think the thread was about advising against counselling BUT I do think that you muddied the waters some by bringing your concerns about people suggesting counselling into the OP.

And something that no one has picked up on (that I've seen) is that God will and DOES use situations to get us to see His viewpoint ~ and that includes therapy. Many may see it as avoiding listening to God ~ but God can use it as a way to get us to listen.

I agree with you also agapetos. God made the doctor and the counselors also, and can use them to help us through this life.

ageptos, have you noticed that I don't disagree with you? Yes, the op states what it does because it's what I wanted to state , but........I still don't disagree with you, as you can see if you read beyond the op . God has blessed you thru counseling? Amen! what else is there to say beyond that? Nothing that I can think of

Another reason I think more people don't seek God's advice is that "pray about it" has become such a common phrase to some that it's lost it's value. How often when someone we know asks us for advice/direction do we ask, sincerely, if they've prayed about it?

Moses received counsel from his father-in-law; King David received counsel from Nathan; Timothy received counsel from Apostle Paul. Yes, I believe that God uses the counsel of others in addition to direct counsel from Himself through prayer.

Proverbs 15:22-23 (NIV): Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. A man finds joy in giving an apt reply—and how good is a timely word!

Psalm 16:7 (NIV): I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

Peace,
Lynn

Just as great is the fact that seeking counsel from others can be found in various places in scripture. So many times man's counsel is sought before God's or INSTEAD of God's and I think He delights in us relying on Him....and it's safer.

I didn't read any of the prior responses.

I think that more people aren't asking God for advice is because, well people are impatient. They want IMMEDIATE responses. They want IMMEDIATE results, and INSTANT gratification. And they feel that asking God would just take too long.

Also, hearing from God and receiving His direction takes practice(or experience)if anyone has it down to a science advise me please . God knows our hearts and so many times we "get it wrong" but I believe He's delighted when we press on and press in.....seeking Him.

And sometimes we need others to stand with us in prayer, as we seek God's counsel.

Matt 18:20 (NIV): "For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them."

Another reason people don't ask God for advice, is because they don't believe that their issue is "big" enough or important to God but He's numbered every strand of hair on our heads(Psalm 139).

Because usually when we receive wisdom from God we have to change and grow. And that is usually somewhat painful, and no one wants pain...

That's true. It seems we can trust God with the big stuff, but we have difficulty trusting Him with the small stuff. It's as if we think we're bugging Him with something trivial. But isn't it a comfort to know that He cares about it all--big or small!
