Well, life is back to "normal" DH is back from the hospital. He got out yesterday. What is frustrating about this is we still don't know what caused it. They didn't do a throat culture but did some blood work and an x-ray. The x-ray was clear and the blood work only showed elevated white blood cells. So something is infected in there but what. To top it off the doctor wrote a prescription for an antibiotic that isn't covered. I don't have an extra $100 for antibiotic. DH insisted on going to school today, I think rest would have been better, but he is a stubborn man. We may very well wind up back in the hospital.

Tracy I hope the prednesone helps soon. DH is taking his too.

Anybody want a teenager? My 13 yo has been in a mood, grumpy and snippy. Maybe the stress of the weekend, but if she doesn't knock it off I'm gonna sell her to gypsies.

MBee, that's awful. [:(]

I can't take anything with codiene in it, it gives me panic attacks. I had forgotten about that until a dr prescribed me some cough syrup w/ codiene a couple of years ago when I had bronchitis. I had to pour it down the sink.

Why is it when I NEED to see a political ad (for Dana's homework) I can't find one anywhere? [8|] We don't have TV anymore so I've been trying to go to different websites that had ads on them, and can't find anything political. Annoying.

I'm slowly getting caught up in the threads, I haven't even read much since Larry has been home this week. He had sinus surgery a week ago but goes back to work tonight.


I figured out that it must be 29 because in another thread you said you weren't 30 and I know that you are only slightly older than me..... I'm sticking with being 28. My children are usually pretty good about reminding me which anniversary of my 28th birthday I celebrate every January. [8D]

Brian and I decided that since tomorrow is a bit crazy with kids having to be to school early and meetings at school for me (meeting with Ethan's math teacher and Zoe's speech therapist) Brian has school and work, that we would go and vote today. UGHHHH! Two hours and 40 minutes later we managed to get out of there with barely enough time get Brian straight to work. He ran in the door with NO time to spare. Now I have to go pick him up in an hour.

I took Ethan and Zoe to basketball evaluations tonight and Ethan came out of there having a horrible asthma attack. [:@] It kinda scared me, he was having so much trouble breathing. The gal doing the evaluation on him actually walked him over to me since she was concerned too. So now I have to set up an appointment with his doctor. His inhaler scrip expired last month (September) and I didn't even notice. GRRRR! I gave him a treatment, but now I think I'm going to need to stash an inhaler at school too as well as having one on me at all times.

Ethan's not the best basketball player but he sure has fun playing and for me it at least gets him moving. I hope this asthma stuff doesn't interfere to much. Zoe loves sports of any sort but basketball is her favorite!

Why don't you vote absentee? We have voted by mail since the twins were born and it's so convenient. I'm in CA and they send me the ballot a good month ahead of time, I send it back when I have made up my mind on all the candidates and propositions. It's easy and no time pressure.

My is it nice outside. I think it's suppose to hit 70 today! I still have flowers that look semi nice. I'm glad I planted a few perenials because with the way the weather has been they got a chance to grow before winter sets in. I haven't voted yet, but will get in before I go to work. What an exceiting time in our lives! Us Illinoisians get to vote on whether or not we want our constitution changed. I just found out that if we vote "for" a change it will the way the schools are funded. I think that's well worth the money spent to make the change. There are a few other changes that seem better to me too.

I'm sorry so many of you are sick.[:'(] The kids have complained about sore throats and a stuffness, but nothing major. I hope you guys feel better. I hate when the kids are so sick that it's scary. Dh got bronchitus(sp?) one year and I was really worried about him because he wasn't getting better as quickly as he usually does. School is going well for the kids. This is "hell week" for the theatre group because the play is at the end of the week. I'll be glad when it's over because I miss our dinners together.[:'(]

Hi all,

I need some advice. DD#1 cannot seem to keep herself organized. She has a planner so she can write everything down, a binder for each subject with a folder for loose papers, and a plastic envelope for homework to be turned in. So she has the tools, she just doesn't use them. She is in 8th grade, and is very bright, so she has been able to "skate" by on her smarts, but as the course work has gotten harder she hasn't been able to do that. We got first quarter report cards and out of her 4 academic classes she had two that were below a c. She is capable of better grades.

Any suggestions?

If you find that answer let me know! I have one that does just fine, one that doesn't care, one that struggles a little bit and one that until this year (he's a freshman) struggled big time. This year he went to a binder and a folder for every class and as long as the work gets put in the right binder he does okay.

Aryn struggles till she finds what works for her, and she has to be the one to figure it out. I can suggest all sorts of things but nothing will suffice unless it's her idea.

Ethan is just at that stage where he just doesn't care. THAT I can't let go on.

Zoe does well with her homework folder, still occasionally misplaces stuff but she manages just fine. Of course she's just in 2nd grade and this could all change big time by 4th grade and drastically by middle school!

Crazy morning around here. Ethan had another asthma attack just from shooting hoops with his little sister! I wasn't home when it happened either and I had his inhaler with me. Hubby sent him to school and by the time he got there he was fine. I was at the school already with Aryn so I called and made an appointment with the doc. OF course by the time we got there there was NO wheezing anymore. So now we have to seriously watch him when he is playing or really active and see if his attacks have moved from illness induced asthma to activity induced asthma. Took him back to school and had a chat with the school nurse. Then I had to go to the pharmacy and the grocery store and then BACK to school to remind Aryn that she has a girl scout meeting with her new troop today after school. I guess it's a good thing that I voted yesterday!

I have an exchange student like that. Wanna trade and straighten eachother's kids out? Actually, I went and color coded his notebooks to his folders. Then I require him to bring home all of his books, folders, notebooks and papers daily. Then I go through them, separate them out and make him do all that looks like it needs to be done. Some of the things he brings home are blank because they worked on them in class, but if he doesn't mark it, I make him do it. That way he gets more practice, and he learns the value of being able to keep himself organized.

He is getting better because I think he is getting sick of all the extra work he has to go through since I make him sit there when I go through his things and organize them in front of him. He hates that.

OK need just a bit of advice here, wondering if I should say anything to the teacher or not.

Last night Dana's homework was to fill out a paper with info about election campaigning. (She's in 4th grade, and the homework was handed out the day it was to be completed.) They needed info from one advertisement, one sound bite, and an article telling a state that one of the candidates visited in the last week. We finally found an ad online that we could put down (we don't have TV anymore) and were able to look up an article about McCain visiting Ohio last week. But we're on dialup and can't download videos, so I had her write that down for the 'sound bite' one.

The teacher deducted points for it "not being finished". Should I say something? We live in a low to mid class area, I know many people don't even have internet access at all. I think if they're going to require something from the internet, they need to either give the students a chance to go look it up at school, or give plenty of time to go somewhere to look it up if they can't at home.

What do you all think?

I would say something - mention the fact that you don't have a TV and that downloading video off the internet was impossible given the the limitations. Also mention that if other projects come home like this that she may want to provide the kids with a way to pull these things from the internet while at school simply because not everyone has access.

I talked to Ethan's math teacher today and figured out what was going on from her point of view and then talked to Ethan as well. Come to find out that for the last week he's been seated at the same desk grouping as a kid that he had some MAJOR trouble with last year. Ethan tells me that this kid has been throwing pencils and pens at him and talking all the time and it's driving him crazy. Ethan told me that he's tried the "debug" program that is in place but it hasn't worked so the next step is to get an adult to help. And hubby thinks I need to step in and talk to the teacher about moving Ethan away from this other child. So now I have to call her again in the morning.

Yay for thing 2 passing math! My daughter came home happy to tell me she now has a C- in College Algebra. She needs at least a C for it to count for college. She'll still need to raise her grade some though, as the final will like pull it down a bit, according to the teacher.

Kim, I was going to offer a trade of teens too.

Danas_mom - I would say something to the teacher. Last year over Christmas break my dd was supposed to e-mail her Spanish teacher like seven times or so. It was supposed to be done all in Spanish. I had to call the teacher and explain that we were up visiting my mom during the majority of that time. Where my mom lives there is no internet at all.

J was terribly disorganised with assignments until we bought him a whiteboard where he can write down each assignment as it comes in and put it's due date next to it.

I think the teacher is going to tell you that you could have gone to the library to use the internet, and not really care that you don't have a tv, and possibly think that you should have a tv and that somehow by not having those things, you are not giving your kids the best they can have. I only say that, because only a person with that mindset would give an assignment assuming that people have access to things like that in their homes 24/7 and to not have it is unheard of.

We have the internet issue with one of my kid's teachers. "Everyone uses the internet now. We don't need to send home information on paper. You can just check the website." UUUGGGHHHH!! No, everyone does not have internet. No, everyone does not have high speed, DSL. No, everyone who attends here does not have a computer at home. No, everyone does not have parents who can take them to the library when it is open. Some of them have parents who work to provide for their needs and aren't even home to greet the bus. Some of them have single parents who can't afford these things, because they need food, shelter and clothing.

Okay, off my soapbox now.

NO - don't put that box away.

I am not required to have a computer, internet, electricity or a telephone in my house to enroll my child in the school.

If you require the work to be done using those items - you better give them time to do it.

And, if my child wastes the time you gave them - I'm still not required to have those items for them.

I have a computer that needs repaired and I can't take it in because someone always needs it for homework or scout work... I roll my eyes and when they complain about the problem I point this out.

However I am not allowed to send a letter into their teachers explaining my point of view - apparently this is argumentative.

I hit a deer last night - not a happy camper about it. Noone was hurt, I'm guessing $2500 damage. STINKS!

Do any of your kids get bad gas pains occasionally? Ds had one so bad in the middle of the night last year that we took him to the hospital. They found nothing. He woke up with one this morning and I gave him some GasX. HE doesn't drink milk, but did eat Lasagna last night which had ricotta cheese in it. I think he may me lactose intolerant because of some past incindents, but not sure. I pulled him off milk last year because he complained of being gassy after he would drink it. HE eats icecream without complaint, but afterall it's ice cream!![:D] I just don't know.

Thing 1 and I are lactose intolerant. We have to really limit our dairy intake or else we're in the bathroom for the rest of the day. But it works both ways too. If we don't eat any dairy products it does the opposite. You know? It's a lose-lose situation.

If you go to the doctor I would see about getting him tested and go from there. If not, there are Lactaid pills he can take before he eats dairy. They usually help.

Honestly, I don't see a problem with the assignment - just the time in which it was expected to be done. In this day and age, technology plays a large part in the world and education. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a family to have access to it somewhere - if not at home, it should be at the library or a neighbors or an internet cafe - or even school itself.

I think the biggest deal is that the assignment was given one day and expected to be turned in the very next morning. Now suppose that the family did not have internet access at home - amazingly enough there are still those people, and only have access to one car and, now suppose that one car was with Dad say at work who happens to work the evening shift and won't be home til well after the library closes. Now if the kids were given a weekend or even a few days to finish an assignment I'm sure Mom and Dad could have gotten to the library or found a neighbor willing to let the kid borrow their TV or high speed internet for a little bit.

Assuming that every family has computer and internet access is actually very common, but it is a false assumption. It's also a false assumption that everyone has TV and to add to that cable or satellite service. Ty had a teacher in middle school that assumed everyone had access to a certain cable channel and assigned the kids to watch a certain science program one night and this teacher actually accused Ty of lying when he told the teacher that we didn't have cable or satellite and he could not watch the program. Ty told me this when he got home so I immediately e-mailed the teacher and told him the same thing. He simply couldn't understand how we could managed without 100's of channels to choose from. [;)][8|] We do very well, thank you and my kid's brains are obviously not hurting from being confined to just a few over the air channels! He did end up recording the program and showing it in class anyway.

Anyway - I need to e-mail a teacher before Ethan goes to math today.

The thing that gets me is not just that it requires you to have something - it sets your schedule. Not only did you need to have TV/Cable to watch that show, but you also had to either be there at that time, or record it on another piece of equipment. And what if you had another kid who had to do another assignment on a tv show?

BigBee had an assignment that MUST be done on Publisher. WHAT? It was a group project and he did have three days in school to do it. Apparently, they don't budget their time well and they had to WRITE the articles before they could add it to the newspaper they were creating. Well, no one hit print, since they were saving it on BigBee's zip drive and we don't have the software at home.

I showed him how to do it in Word, but he didn't have the other two boys work to add to it. Oh, we had it in Publisher and downloaded open source to run it, but it didn't work. If it was printed out, I would have typed it for them because it isn't their fault we don't have the software and even though they wasted time, the teacher let them...

She accepted what he turned in. I haven't heard the grade yet.

Momma-bee...I am so sorry. I am glad that no one was injured. Do you think that the insurance company will repair your vehicle? About 12 years ago a deer totaled one of our cars...and we don't live in an area known for a dense deer population.
