We do not have cable television and we only have dial up internet. If a homework assignment required Publisher we would be in big trouble.

Publisher is desktop publishing / printing made easy. It will make cards, calanders, business cards, and brochures / newsletters / websites. You and I can take word, turn half the images / text upside down, and hit print and fold it into a card. Publisher does it without thinking about it. It does brochures without needing to set columns and column breaks - just use pre-set text boxes. In other words - it is a combination of templates and wizards. Umm, like Printshop? (is that still around?) I told him there isn't anything that publisher does that I can't do - if I have enough time. Thursday night at 6 without two boy's work isn't enough time - so, basically, he did the project from scratch / memory in word.

My dad is now officially out of work - laid off. After 40 years with the same company. 40 YEARS! He was third in seniority but apparently that doesn't matter. My mother is still working at the same factory and she's only been there about 10 years. My dad is just 2.5 years away from when he wanted to retire. He's kind of freaking out because there are not to many places that are going to hire a 62 year old man. He went to put in job applications today at a few different places. My folks thankfully don't have a mortgage anymore but their property taxes are crazy high I don't know how it's going to work out for them. For the first time in 30 years, my dad actually sounded really worried about his finances. Hopefully they can sell the remaining bulldog pups ASAP to help out financially. Got to run. Off to pick up kids for dental appointments. Blessings, Garsy

I'm having a hard time keeping up here. Don't know why. But I wanted to say, Mbee, when Brian nearly totaled our van hitting a deer, we picked a shop to fix it based on who would give us a free loaner car. Maybe that is an option for you? Garsy, that happened to my dad too with a company he worked with over 20 years. He now has a seasonal job and collects unemployment every winter. It's hard to see my parents struggling year after year when they have worked and worked and worked.

I don't know if you can do this for insurance purposes, but the last time I needed a car, I used Priceline and paid $15 a day. Might be worth a try.

Momma-bee...in our state there is no deductible if you are struck by an animal, I hope that is the same in your state. Garsy-Sorry about the loss of your father's job.

ORIGINAL: macokjc Honestly, I don't see a problem with the assignment - just the time in which it was expected to be done. In this day and age, technology plays a large part in the world and education. I don't think it is unreasonable to expect a family to have access to it somewhere - if not at home, it should be at the library or a neighbors or an internet cafe - or even school itself. Not everyone has access to it. Some don't live near enough to a library to walk there and they can't drive or don't have access to a car during library hours. My sister and I will be up visiting our mom for Thanksgiving. There is no internet service where she is at.

ORIGINAL: danas_mom OK need just a bit of advice here, wondering if I should say anything to the teacher or not. Last night Dana's homework was to fill out a paper with info about election campaigning. (She's in 4th grade, and the homework was handed out the day it was to be completed.) They needed info from one advertisement, one sound bite, and an article telling a state that one of the candidates visited in the last week. We finally found an ad online that we could put down (we don't have TV anymore) and were able to look up an article about McCain visiting Ohio last week. But we're on dialup and can't download videos, so I had her write that down for the 'sound bite' one. The teacher deducted points for it "not being finished". Should I say something? We live in a low to mid class area, I know many people don't even have internet access at all. I think if they're going to require something from the internet, they need to either give the students a chance to go look it up at school, or give plenty of time to go somewhere to look it up if they can't at home. What do you all think? I agree with you. They can't assume that all children have the same access.

Mbee, I hope things work out with your car. Garsy, that's sad about your father's job. I hate to see that happen to anyone. Did he get a choice of early retirement? At least that would have some extra money attached, or usually does.

My mom called this afternoon. My Dad, at 62 years old wants to go back to school! He filed for unemployment today and if he goes back to school it will be paid for. The way it's looking for most folks is that this layoff will last at least 18 months! 18 months! It just bewilders me that my father wants to go back to school. This is the guy that just barely made it through high school! But if it's what he wants to do I'm behind him all the way! Took Ty and Zoe to the dentist today. Zoe came through with flying colors and Ty - not so good. He has to go back in in a month for further work. Ethan and Aryn have their appointment in two weeks. Ethan also has his school musical in two weeks and I need to come up with some sort of immigrant style costume - something depicting other countries. I'm at a loss. Blessings, Garsy

My kids went yesterday. Would you believe both of them were apparently born without baby teeth. DeeDee lacks one, BigBee lacked two. They both have all their wisdom teeth. I didn't (only uppers) Weird. One cavity each. I have serious dental anxiety and could not take them myself and Poppa finally got them in. The last time they went was 5 years ago - they each had one cavity...

Thanks everyone for the responses. I don't really have a problem with the assignment either, just the time in which they expected it to be returned. They could easily have let the kids complete that part of the assignment at school, kwim? And FWIW, our nearest library is 40 miles away and there are no public computers anywhere around here. Dana still hasn't brought the paper home so I can see her grade for myself, I guess on Friday I'll see what it says and contact the teacher then. I had a doctor's appointment today. Looks like I'll be having surgery, I have a consult on the 24th. Hubby's big interview is next week. He's getting really excited. MBee, sorry about your car. Hubby and Dana hit a deer one night driving home from a friend's house, it knocked it all the way on top of his truck but didn't do any damage other than break out one of the fog lights. Garsy, so sorry about your dad's job. Sad that giving your whole life to a company doesn't get you jack anymore. The days of a company taking care of you if you're loyal to them are long over.

Aw, thanks for asking guys. I have this...thing in my lower abdomen that the doctor thinks is a hernia. It's gotten significantly larger over the last year, so she (and I) feels it's time to get it taken care of.

Hey everyone. Sorry to hear about everyone's tough times. I'll remember you in prayer. It feels like November is "Give Kids Days Off" month. They were off for election day, now today and tomorrow for a teacher's convention (statewide). The week before and leading up to Thanksgiving is all half-days for conferences, then the Thanksgiving break. It is hard for me to get all my work hours in with schedules like this! I've also been dealing with election fall-out. It seems to have had a profound affect on many from my church, and may cause rifts in some relationships. I hope things can calm down and come to a middle ground.
