Online Filters (Full Version)

Hello all. I am finally ready to install a web filter on my computer. I'm looking for recommendations. Every filter I've looked at claims they are the "best".

So, what I need to know is...which one really IS the "best"?

How about the clicks of your mouse? If your mind is dirty, you will find outlets for it other than your computer. Besides, filters work by key words and will block many sites that have such key words but are good.

For example, let's say that a church posts a site for a ministry to teens and uses that word "teens." Filters will block that site because filthy sites use the same word. See what I mean?

So, what comes out of the heart, the mouse detects. I'm sure Jesus agrees.

Have you considered going to consumer reports to see if they have a side by side comparison of online filters?

Just maybe, maybe like me he has kids to protect????

Don'tha know that Consumer Reports is funded by foreigners? You just can't trust them!

No doubt... they have Norton listed as one of the best anti-virus packages. Truth is, and all computer geeks know it's so, they are the WORST of all.

Here is a site with an excellent filter. You can have any questionable sites emailed to a third party or if you are protecting your kids then these sites can be emailed to you. If it blocks sites you consifer OK then you can add the site to allowed sites. www.settingcaptivesfree.com/home Look under SCF filtered internet resources.

What you want is a filter that will only allow you to go to certain websites also called a white list. This keeps it very simple so you don't have to worry about updates and all the rest. You won't even need an accountability partner. Just lock it down. If you are using Windows Vista Home premium, it's built in. Works just fine. Bsafe also has this capability, but last time I checked, you are limited to only 50 sites.

If you're on a Mac I'd recommend that you take a look at Content Barrier. It does a great job of filtering by category, you can set the level of filtering by user and can designate approved sites (or block any specific sites) and the filters are updated regularly. It also lets you manage internet and computer usage by day and hour or by number of hours (or both). The only drawback might be that it's Mac only.
