I think it would be better to use the hard earned tithes of the members to do more meeting of physical needs of the community during tough economic times than to build a building that will require more and more resources to maintain. Not all of those churches are able to meet their mortgages according to the NYT.

I agree StephK. There is a church in our area that is expanding. Yes, they do need a larger sanctuary since the pastor is preaching 4 or 5 sermons over the weekend just so they can accomodate everyone. But I fail to see how the expensive coffee bar is going to help anyone, especially since if you don't have transportation, you can't even get to the church.

And, that right there explains why there is no "clear cut" answer for ALL churches with regards to building or not building during an economically challenging time. Each congregation is different. Each community is different. And, each individual church has different "needs" to meet within the community that it serves....each community is ministered to very differently.

Can't the church members carpool? (how are the people making it to the 4 or 5 services?)

This particular church has attempted to start a "transportation ministry" but they haven't had any sucess with it. I don't know why.

Not a transportation ministry but the individuals take it upon themselves to pick up people who need a ride. Go out and invite people and offer them a ride. Get to know the people in their congregation and sacrifice of "themselves" to one another?

My church has no transportation ministry either. But that does not stop us from picking up people we know don't have cars or cannot afford the ride.

OK take this back. I bet this is not a community church? Rather members don't have a community about them and live far from one another.

I think that is the main problem. I was there for a few services. The pastor mentioned that when they were in a smaller building in downtown, they reached more of the needy and he wishes that they still had that ability.

That church has about 12,000 (I think it's that high) in membership. They would better be able to serve the community if they would purchase buses instead of building a coffee shop. But, maybe that is what their membership wants.

The church I attend now has about 300 members. If my regular ride can't pick me up then I have 3 or 4 back-ups. If I can't reach anyone, this church is on the bus route, so I can still get there.
