actually, Cat doesn't mind dogs that are quiet, respectful and deferential. So to answer the question, I'd be happy to get a puppy if someone will walk it several times a day and pick up the poop, train it not to jump on people bark or slobber, give it baths and keep it company when we're away.
(if I lived in the country I'd love to get a big dog)
how do I handle a friend who's always verbally putting herself down?

Just tell her she's probably right in all her accusations and she'll get over it.
Lately I haven't been able to get on AIM or Facebook without someone wanting to chat with me...and finally it's gotten really annoying. How can I make the message clear to my friends that I really don't want to talk to them right now?

call all your friends and family long distance...I'm sure your job won't mind when they see it on the phone bill... throw in some 900 numbers if none of your friends are home.

Get a chihuahua. You can hang it on your arm like Paris Hilton and it will yap at you all the time. It will worship you, no doubt about that. *snickers*

Play the old miser and tell them (loudly) to be quiet. Bonus points if you shuffle after them with a rolled-up newspaper in your hand.
