Shrommer -> RE: Sad Christmas Songs (12/28/2008 10:29:02 PM)

I can't stand it when they sing "Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel" very slowly. The melody is already like a Gregorian Chant. Even though it has the word "Rejoice" in the chorus, we are supposed to be putting ourselves in the shoes of someone in the Old Testament, longing and groaning for the Messiah to come, one day, perhaps far off in the future. When the song ends, Israel is still captive, mourning in lonely (lowly?) exile. A Spanish verse says "Israel who is crying in sad desolation, anxiously awaiting her liberation".
