When my son was young I got a great biography of St. Nicholas from the library and read it to him. I never did tell him Santa Claus was real and he didn't believe in him but other kids did and he had questions. So I just told him the truth about where he 'came' from. Voice of the Martyrs has a nice kids book called 'The Story of St. Nicholas' I got this year to read to my kids at the Christian school where I teach.

St. Nicholas is the patron saint of prostitutes. I guess you don't want to tell that to a kid, though.

What does that mean? What does a patron saint actually do? If prostitutes feel a need to name a patron saint does that take anything away from the "Saint"? Nicholas from Myra was a godly man who spent years chained and tortured in prison for His belief in and love for Jesus Christ. If he is the patron saint of prostitutes it is probably because, as the story is told, he gave dowries to three sisters who's father did not have the money they needed to get married and he almost resorted to 'putting them out on the street'. He is also the patron saint of sailors, children, travelers, unmarried girls, bakers, weavers and many more! Jesus Christ died for and loves them all.

We struggled with the "santa issue" for quite some time. My hubby was one of those kids who WAS devastated when he learned the truth, and his Mom is very big on the 'santa' thing. We didn't want to hurt her feelings, and we didn't want to lie to our kids either. So we told them the truth: "A very long time ago there was a very nice man who used to give people presents on christmas. He died, but some people like to pretend he's still here. If you want to pretend too, that's okay, but he's not real, and don't go around telling everyone he's not real since it might hurt people's feelings." So we do 'pretend' about santa, especially when DH's Mom is around, but every so often DH will re-state how Santa isn't real, we just pretend he is. It usually ends up a discussion about God, since they ask "Is God real?"
