For us it was their dad's tradition: I never had a stocking.

I also have made stockings for my kids and my nieces and nephews. Well, my grandmother made dd1's and then I made them for the rest.

Oh, I always put a new toothbrush in theirs too.

I have to ask why the fruit? Oranges and apples? I've never heard of that! Is that a Regional thing?

My grandmother says that her mother (who came from Germany) always did that because at the time food was harder to come by so fruit in the stocking was a rare treat. They did nuts as well for protein.

My mother added bananas for us kids and I in turn do it for my kids.

Lol!

I would love to see some photos of your homemade stockings i think this is a great idea and was thinking of making some for next year!

I'll have to do that, when I get batteries in my camera. My husband stole them out of my camera to put in our mouse.

I'm pretty sure they did it in the Little House books, so it's got to be an old tradition.

We didn't have stockings when I was growing up so I made sure we did them with our family. I have all girls and what gets put in the stocking has changed through the years. What I do now that they are older is put hairpins and ponytail holders. We always need those. I get them all new make-up and some small bottles of perfume. Usually a small tube of lotion. This year I have a small coin purse for each one in their stockings. I end up spending more than I think on stockings. There is usually some candy and a toothbrush as well.

Growing up we always did stockings first. It was something we were allowed to open without the whole family.

Now, however, DH likes to watch the kids open their stockings; so we do it first, but not alone.

When I was little my stocking (which my mom made) was very small. So my mom would put the stuff on top fo the stocking on the entertainment center.

I'm very excited this year. My first year with stockings hung by the mantel. I had a fireplace growing up, but we didn't use that room ever, so we didn't put Christmas down there. We moved to a place with a fireplace (that we can't use), so the stockings are hung on the mantel with care.

My Mom says that when she was a kid they always got an orange and mixed nuts in the toe of their stocking, because oranges were apparently hard to come by and were a real treat in the winter. I've carried on and usually put oranges in our stockings. No mixed nuts, tho.

Our stockings look pretty deformed when they're "full". Usually stocking stuffers are the stuff we shop for on Christmas Eve. DVD's, CD's, Tom's toothpaste (used to be for my Dad, his name was Tom and he got a kick out of it), fast food gift certs, lots of candy, hand lotion, Chapstick, little gadgets, desk toys, etc.

Last year I crammed DH's full of free office supplies. We went to the state fair in August and I collected a pencil from each of the displays, and other little notepads, magnets and post-its, etc. I also had sent away for some free samples and stuffed those in. He couldn't believe the pile of FREE stuff in his stocking! This year he's getting a weather forecaster thing (a coathanger looking thing that sticks to the side of the house), a fly shooter gun and probably a box of mint chocolate M&M's. Not sure what else yet.

we usually do some candy, an ornament, and any small wrapped presents. My husband doesn't think we should wrap the small things, but I love wrapping presents and we always had ours wrapped as a kid so he has let me run with it.

When I was growing up, we would always have at least one candy cane and one piece of some sort of chocolate

One small present and some candy, we do try to find candy that they don't normally get. The Cracker Barrel's gift shop is awesome for that.

About the orange/apple thing ... we do that too, and yes, I know that oranges were somewhat hard to come by during the winter months. The reason for it going into the toe of the stocking is to give it that nice round "full" look.

(And Manda, we "fill" our stockings too!)

We'll be filling them with some fruit, trail mix, a tube of kid's chapstick (necessity here) and possibly a small cuddly -- probably a bear for dd and frogs for the ds'. We do NOT do candy, as our sons have allergies.

Well I guess the orange thing is so foreign to me because I've lived in Florida for 25 years. (But I'd never seen that in Indiana either.) My kids would probably equate that with coal!

In my kids stocking I always put one of those story time Lifesaver boxes and a gum bank. Those two items date back to my own childhood. We put other little stuff in them too, like chap stick, nail polish, this year, it's minutes for ds phone. I think he also got a personalized box of Qtips

I don't know how I would feel if I suddenly got an orange. I guess if I had always gotten one, it would be okay, but if it just randomly happened now, I'd be a little confused.

On the other hand . . feel free to slip in a Double Whopper anytime.

We actually use a woman's stocking. We put a silver dollar in the toe, and then an Orange. Then we put everything in there. Candy, toys, CD's, balls, etc.

My nephew is 16 so this is our first year with on stocking. :(

Oh, and we fill our stockings.

Do the adults get stockings in your family also? Or just the kids?

Adults, too, in our household. Hubby is getting candy he likes and a small gift.

My parents always put a grapefruit in the toe of our stockings! Probably because grapefruits take up a lot of room and they didn't have to spend as much on candy that way. LOL! My mom was also a bit of a health nut and was generally opposed to candy.

These are so fun to read

We still do stockings for our kids, and now they are grown and one is married. When I mail off my daughter and her husband's gifts, I always include a stocking for both of them with their favorite candies, things like lip gloss and makeup items for her, and chap stick and a men's manicure kit for him. I also included a gift card to each of their favorite stores. She called all thrilled last year...her husband had never gotten a stocking before and he thought it was great.

For our daughter that's 20, but is home from college for the winter break, I still go all out in hers. It has oodles of candy(more for her to share that way!), hair accessories, nail polish, make-up, Starbucks and Jamba Juice gift cards, purse calendar, and things like that.

When they were younger always let the kids eat whatever they wanted from their stocking and pretty much whenever. But, neither were the kind to eat it non stop, so it was never a problem.

Our tradition was they could get up and find and go through their stocking, even if we weren't up yet. We'd go in soon after that and enjoy watching them go through all the little goodies. We always enjoyed that for awhile before we started opening presents.

Just the kids...we never did them for ourselves. We'll always do them for the adult kids though, and someday, I'll do them for our grandkids too

We usually fill one for the adults here, but we probably won't this year. As Santa's helpers, though, we get a share of the loot before it goes in.

Everyone who is here Christmas morning gets one - most of the time that's the kids, me and dh, and my dad...and the dog! I've got a couple extras in case there's anyone else, like my Dad's girlfriend but she's been with her kids the last couple years. And they're all hanging up...the four of ours on the mantle. The other two (Dad's and another like it) on my antique sewing machine in the front living room, and the dog's hangs on the doorknob of my pantry in the kitchen (by his bowls).
