Heyo!
I just wanted to share some excitement. I JUST submitted my application online to Grad School. I will be sending my admission packet on Monday. Woot woot!

I'm applying for a graduate degree in Telecommunications. I will complete my undergrad come August (in only 3 years) in Electronic Media (majors: Media Arts & Journalism).

So I just wanted to share that and ask if anyone else is in the application or admission process currently? Or if anyone has gone through it? How is Grad School different than Undergrad? Is the transition too terribly different than from high school to college?

I'm dreaming of a one bedroom apartment with my cat and my vinyl. It's crazy to think I'm about to be all grown up. Is it too obvious I am a little little bit excited? I'm so incredibly excited!

I would definitely appreciate any prayers since my program only accepts 13...
Sincerely,
-Reba.

Congrats - it is a wonderful feeling to finally finish the admissions packet - especially the essay. Graduate school is quite different than undergrad. In it, you'll need to be more self-motivated - instead of simply amassing lots of information from many different disciplines and regurgitating it, you'll be focusing on one disciplne - going in depth to the roots - and you'll be starting to think more critically about what you are reading and learning. The key in grad school is being able to articulate your ideas; being able to evaluate them - and being able to find novel approaches to existing problems. At least at the master's degree level. At the PhD level, you'll start working more on new ideas and learning how to really research, which more than anything else - is looking a big blob - some sort of problem which has components that aren't necessarily defined, then trying to determine which methodologies to apply - which theories to apply - or creating a theory of your own - and carving a pathway through it.

In terms of practical things - you'll have even more flexibility. You will be starting to look at your professors as peers. You might be involved with research (which is a good thing). You might be teaching a course or two (or more). Everyone around you will probably be intellectual, curious, and smart - so you might not be the smartest anymore. You'll be developing expertise. You might not have the same kind of comraderie as in your undergrad years. There will be more reading, smaller classes, more interaction with your peers and professors during class. You'll also start to think a lot differently - I've found it to be very freeing. It can also be quite lonely - particularly as you specialize and look at different angles for your work - because maybe not that many people are interested in it. Overall, I like it better than undergrad - but do miss the hands on practical aspects.

I chose a program that was ok, but not really the best that I could have chosen. It was a mismatch for me in many ways. But, I got a strong sense of purpose and direction because I went through it, and this turned out to be a great thing.

I think that you'll enjoy grad school. I hope that you are able to get into the program that you desire. Let us know how it goes for you!

My grad school was easier for me. There were more group projects. You did not have to take all these core requirements that you weren't going to use. Most people took it seriously since it was all working adults. Plus the field I was studying (IT) I already had some experience with.

I'm really excited. I am not too terribly worried about class size. I goto a private university so I"m used to having to show up.

I had a 45 minute conversation with the admissions guy for my department. I think he really liked me.. at least his response to my thank you e-mail said that it seemed the school fit me and i fit the school..I hope that's a good sign :).

It's dangerous to go to graduate school in my profession but I made the decision because I've spent most of my undergrad below the line production wise and now I want to go above and do actual producing or reporting. The philosophy in broadcasting is, "why would i hire you with an MA when I can hire some punk kid with either no education or just a BA for 10k less?". But I think it will work out.

I'm definitely looking into graduate assistantships. The hardest thing will be being accepted to the school, after that it seems like it's pretty easy to transition. I'm really looking forward to working one-on-one with professionals. I've had that experience as an undergrad and hope it continues!

I will keep you guys informed of my progress. Thanks so much for all of the info!
