My 16 year old son, Jack has been in the hospital. He was taking some pills for foot fungus and he got very sick the day after Christmas. I knew there were strong warnings on the pill about liver damage but he had stomach flu symptoms. He had been taking it for 2 weeks so I thought if the pills were going to affect him they would have already done so. It was at bedtime that he got sick and I thought it was just the flu. The next morning he was still sick and my mommy sense started warning me that this was not the flu. It was nagging me enough that I called my mom who is a RN. She was not sure if he would start to show reactions this late but suggested an ER visit just to be safe. It was a Saturday of a holiday weekend and I cringed at the thought of taking my son out of bed to sit for hours and hours in a busy ER just to be told it is the flu go home. I told her I would give him til lunch and see how he is. By lunchtime he was complaining of a lot of pain and he was still throwing everything up. I called a neighbor about urgent care hoping that Jack could get seen sooner there. They suggested a hospital in a small town closer to us then Springfield. He said it was small so he should get in sooner. So we took him there. He did get in right away and although they kept a stomach virus as a possibility they did not think it was. Turns out he had pancreatitis from the pills he had been taking. All that time he was in a lot more pain then just a flu type pain. All night long and part of the next day he went through that and I did not take him in because I did not want to sit in a busy ER for hours and hours waiting. What really hurts is once they found out what was wrong they got him some pain medicine and stopped his vomiting. Withing a half hour he was comfortable again. I cannot tell you how bad I wish I had known it was not the flu. I wish I could go back and tell myself to listen to my mommy since that was telling me this is not the flu go to the ER. From what I read I do not think his pancreas is damaged but time will tell. He will go back for more tests on Friday to make sure his blood levels are back to normal.

Hindsight is always 20/20 -- you used your best judgment at the time and no one can ask for more. You did not stay home from the ER because you'd rather not be inconvenienced. You stayed home because you were reasonably steady in the opinion that the symptoms were not severe enough to warrant that response. When the symptoms changed your mind, you took appropriate action. Nothing horrible about that.

Not horrible, it's just so hard to know with kids. Even though your kids are older than mine, he couldn't quantify the pain for your or tell you it was more than the flu. I've gone to the doctor thinking there was something horribly wrong and it been nothing and felt silly...my dd had a giant welt that I thought was a nasty spider bite. I put a big bandaid on it (we had to be outside that morning and I didn't want to put sunscreen on it) and drove home from visiting at my dad's (2 hrs away) that afternoon to see our doctor - she took the bandaid off and whatever it was was totally gone. But my kids are hard to read, especially dd - she doesn't show pain! Any time I've gone thinking they had an ear infection, it was nothing. Anytime the doctor has caught an ear infection, it was when we were there for a check up or something else.

Your son is 16yo. He can tell you how bad he feels. Really, maybe to him it just felt like a really bad flu bug. Now, you wanna talk about guilt... ds2 broke his arm when he was 2yo. He was standing on a chair and fell. We took him to the ER where they x-rayed his wrist, which is where he said it hurt. No fractures were found. I kept telling to doctor that he was still hurting. TWO WEEKS LATER we were refered to a bone doctor who diagnosed a fracture--at his shoulder! So the kid ran around for two weeks with a broken arm!

Most of the time those symptoms are just the flu, so how could you have known? I would have done the same thing. Sometimes it is hard to weigh the benefit of seeing an ER or Urgent Care doctor against the time you have to sit there with a sick kid getting exposed to all kinds of other germs. Don't beat yourself up for this. You did what seemed logical at the time.

After we were at the hospital and he was feeling better I was telling him I was sorry and I thought it was just the flu. Then he tells me that he had a feeling it was not the flu especially by the next morning when he said he was feeling like it was getting worse not better. Well at least for that part I can say I really did not know since he did not tell me. It was a good learning experience for Jack though. I had a chance to tell him that he now knows what is sick enough to warrant and trip to the hospital. He can now tell me if he feels sick enough to go to the ER and I will know he knows the difference now.
