If you are a teacher would you make friends with the parents of your students? Is there a school law against it?

None that I know of. It could get sticky if not handled right though. Favoritism is a cuss word you know. God Bless

My kids teachers are my friends on Facebook. Several teachers at my kids' school have kids in my kids' classes so I'm more friendly with them on kinda two different levels. I play bunco from time to time with several teachers and lots of moms. The teacher/moms at my kids' school try to get into social groups where they can also be "______'s Mom" and not just "Mrs. _______" I can't imagine a "school law" against it.

I"m not a teacher but I work at a school. The school is not very big. If the the parents couldn't be friends with their kids' teachers they couldn't be friends with their co-workers. My mom teaches there and some of her best friends are parents of former students. In a few years my dd may have her grandma as a teacher as well as a woman who I've known since she was in about 9th grade and in my brother's class.

I work at a school and all of my daughter's teachers are my coworkers. I'm sure there is no school law against being friends with your child's teacher. It does have its awkward moments though; especially if there is a problem with one of them.

Although you have to be careful of favoritism, some shared history is important dealing with parents. It makes it easier to work together if there is some level of friendship with the parents. They don't have to be best buddies but to know them as a bit more than just Mr or Ms so-in-so is a great idea. Working together in the PTA, bake sale, chaperons, friendly notes home, even mentioning a new haircut, are some little idea.

Thanks everyone. Yeah, I know it could get sticky sometimes and it is easier to deal with the same gender parent as own self and be friends with them than the different gender parent. Dealing with a different gender parent could even get stickier.

I am a new middle school teacher (used to teacher elementary) and I don't think I will become friends with students parents and its not that I am opposed to it but I don't see it happening in the future. First of all, I have over 120 kids that I teach and I am just barely getting to know some of the parents. Second, most of my students are from different cultures and speak languages that I am not fluent in. A lot of my parent communication is done through interpreters. Third, my students move so often its really amazing. Just this week, I had 6 students move out of the area and 5 students enroll. Its hard to build relationships with students and parents when there is that much moving going on. On a positive note, I am working on getting to know my students that will probably stick around this year.
