Having never been to a paediatric office, I don't know!

I can understand that ~ the problem is that they're going to be causing other people to be sick too, not to mention if they have flu (any sort) or something serious, they're not going to be able to do their job properly.

Often times they start getting in trouble with their employers because they've used up what sick time, if any, they have because they've had to stay home with sick children.

There are a few that try to be heroic and go to work when they are obviously sick.
A few may be classed as heroic, many will be selfish though.

So they go into work and pass their flu (or whatever) onto someone else ~ perhaps someone who is already sick through an underlying condtion and they become really sick (ie requiring hospitalisation) and can't afford the bills ~ or perhaps even die, leaving some child without a parent...

Are all the pretty birds still hanging around?

Haven't seen the parakeet for a few days, but the sun conure is still around. And two days ago there was an Oriole on my hummingbird feeder. Three days ago an eagle swooped down and nabbed a squirrel (eeeeeek) ... which was pretty in sort of a "wild kingdom" sort of way, I suppose.

I think if this upcoming fall/winter is an especially bad flu season, more employers will be setting stricter policies about coming to work sick ... clearly telling people to stay home if they are sick. I know that one local employer here has already amended their employee handbook to make "coming to work sick" an offense for which an employee can be disciplined.

If the flu gets bad around here, my plan is to pretty much just stay home all the time and avoid people to the extent that I can (because of my compromised immune system!) This will be a bit more of a challenge when my wonderful DH is deployed or otherwise gone for months, but I can certainly work to limit my trips out ... and to shop at less busy times.

This is pretty much my plan too.

While I am sympathetic to those who don't have an income if they don't show up at work, I have more sympathy with those they will probably infect.

My wonderful DH and I just made an appt for 2:15pm on Tues Sep 1 for the "regular" flu shot from a local pharmacy for $25 each. If we wanted to get insurance to pay for it, we'd have to wait about a month until our doctor's office got them in, and we'd rather be protected earlier given my health situation. (We ended up paying privately every year for this reason.... oh well)

(THe H1N1 shots aren't available, yet.)

Wow that's quick, I can't get a flu shot until October. I just go to Kroger and get one.

My hubby doesn't have a choice of whether to go in to work or not. I fhe is sick he has to show up for them to say he can go to the dr...then the dr has to say he is sick enough to stay home. They never say that unless you are pretty shot...as in high fever. Usually they just give you meds (headache/fever) and send you back to work.

The majority of people who have flu have a high fever.

Wow! I've never seen an eagle.

I guess there is a website that tracks the H1N1 by state and county.
http://flutracker.rhizalabs.com/

This link gets you to the US interactive map.

This one is by country.

No. In fact, our pediatrician is in the same office as a cardiologist and two family doctors. There are a LOT of older people there too. The pedi patients do have their own exam rooms.

No one is getting the H1N1 vaccine in our house. Mark and Josh will get the regular flu shot and I probably will as well. I am going to be pretty much house bound come late Oct. due to being unable to fit comfortably behind the steering wheel (short arms and legs don't mix well with a pregnant belly) and Mark's busy schedule will not allow him to take us to play dates or story times during the week or out much some weekends. We'll just be extra careful about washing hands etc. after coming home if the H1N1 gets bad in our area.

I agree that employees should stay home if they are sick. However, many employers don't see it that way. That may be changing some with the H1N1 scare, but it's not changing all that much.

Josh's ped office does not have separate waiting areas or exam rooms. They also don't have many toys so that probably cuts down on spreading germs to an extent. One thing that they do that I think is nice is that the first 2-4 appts. (depending on how many docs are in that day) are held for newborns and infants under 6 months. You don't have to take them in that early but they encourage it. And they will give the appts. to others if no one is scheduled a day or two ahead. I had to change one of Josh's appts. at the last minute and got to sneak into one of the early slots.
