I don't use b**ch to describe anyone, but I sometimes say "b**tching and moaning". Not around the kids though.

We don't cuss in our house but they hear plenty of it from other places. We just tell them certain words are "grown-up" words and are inappropriate for kids their age to be using.

You have to be careful with Yiddish though. There are some common Yiddish words that have specific anatomical meanings. When I was in college our director let people who were uncomfortable with swearing use Yiddish but not the Yiddish words for certain male organs, etc.

I don't use the b word unless I'm using it correctly to describe a female dog. I find that word insulting otherwise because it specifically targets women and equates them with an uncontrollable animal (the association with a hormonal female dog in heat/pregnant/protecting her babies). I'm insulted by that.

It's a fallen world. I must admit that more than once the verb usage of the word (as in 'complaining') has flashed into my mind when I'm in conversation but I'd rather take a moment and find a better word.

This doesn't mean that my language is perfect. There are other words where I don't understand the big deal.

I don't much care for the b-word either. I really really really try hard not to swear...but I swore like a sailor for so many years, it can creep in before I know it.
I say the d-word sometimes. And ''my'' swear is the c-word that rhymes with wrap .

Absolutely!

Funny story; I had a friend who was a lovely Christian woman from a Franco-Quebecois background. She swore like a sailor. A friend once, very politely, mentioned to her that English-speaking Christians would consider her language rather... ah... blue. She was dismayed and explained that all the English swear words are the "no big deal" swear words to French speakers (ie similar to "darn" in severity), and the really bad swear words were the church-based ones. (In Quebec there's a whole string of swear words related to part of a church building, or objects. It's a leftover from a society which was very firmly rooted in Catholicism years ago.) She made an effort from that time on not to use the English swear words either, but it was an uphill battle which she found quite challenging.

I actually find I swear a bit more now that I'm married. DH's workplace has no issues with colourful language, so some rather choice words occasionally slip from DH's lips; now I find they slip from mine more often. We've both managed to get our tongues under control; now it's just my brain I need to control!

Yeah, I used to have a real potty mouth too. Sometimes those words pop out of my mouth before I know they are coming. I try to cram them back in, but they don't go back in all that easily.
Fortunately it is getting more and more rare that those words will pop into my head or out of my mouth.

Yes, that one's fairly common around here. Dh taught me that. I don't think I ever thought about it until after we were married and it started to bother me that it was sneaking into my usage.

The funny thing is that I have no problem with it now and dh is attempting to eradicate it from our children.

Makes me think of a scene in The Phantom Tollbooth where there's a big dinner and everybody has to eat their words. The people who know what's going on say things like "Steak! Potato salad! Cherries!" and the ones who don't say things like "Dear guests, I am most honoured to be invited, blah blah blah," only to find out those words don't taste so good.

Kylie I agree with you there, things like "bugger" and "bloody" are part of the Australian culture, they aren't really used as a swear word and I use them sometimes. I think each culture has its own words that are kind of taboo.

While it may be fine in our individual cultures, it is worth considering an other culture that we happen to be in and curbing our tounge so that we don't cause offense ~ and give a bad reflection of our faith and our nationality.

Agreed Aga, I wouldn't use it around certain cultures. I think everyone here knows that and agrees with that.

Eg: while living in Belgium, my husband learned why they're called "bum bags" in English-speaking Europe, rather than "fanny packs". You never know whose toes you will tread on with an inadvertent word, but it's always wise to try to be circumspect when you can.

hahaha at fanny. Here its considered sort of "rude" to say that word, it means something else. So I remember when the Nanny came on and they say "fanny" in it, me and my sister used to giggle and mum would tell us off!

Now that's interesting, I wonder how the 2 cultures divided that up.

I recently got a TOS violation for using a curse word in England, and here in America I didn't know I was being rude at all.... basically a different version of "buzz off".

I suspect that I know what it is ~ and given the meaning (in that context) it is rude. That's part of the reason I don't like the word being used in any context.

All the alternatives that I can think of were not allowed to be said when I was growing up, lol.

Well, like I said I can't think of any alternatives for "buzz off" that I would consider appropriate so maybe it also offensive here?

You know, lately I have really been a bit um... peeved at our main stream media and even a bit with Obama for the lack of recognition of/for our servicemen and women.

Michael Jackson's death was talked about, is being talked about and will continue to be talked about. Did you know that a Marine Corps fighter pilot died just a few days before MJ? He was 89 and had flown 253 missions combined in 3 different wars. He was a hero. And yet, not a stinking mention of his death in the MSM.

quote:

And when the last mournful drone of the bagpipes faded, they said goodbye to Col. Kenneth L. Reusser of Milwaukie, the most decorated U.S. Marine Corps aviator in history.

"He was the finest gentleman I've ever met," said Harley Wedel of Fairview, a fellow Korean War veteran. "I'm really going to miss him."

Reusser flew an amazing 253 combat missions in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was shot down in all three wars -- five times in all. He earned two Navy Crosses, four Purple Hearts and two Legions of Merit among his 59 medals.

When Dr. Tiller was shot it overshadowed the death of a soldier here on US soil, he and another solider were gunned down in Little Rock, Arkansas by a Muslim extremist. Obama made a statement about Tiller's death and the Attorney General sent US Marshall's to protect abortion centers and doctors yet no one was sent to protect our soldiers. Obama didn't even make a statement about the incident until TWO DAYS later. Two freaking days, yet he could make a statement about the death of an abortion doctor after only 5 hours.

It's just stinking disgusting.

Micah and I volunteer at benefit for an organization called TAPS, this year was the 3rd year that we have participated in some capacity. TAPS does 24/7/365 support for the friends and family of fallen military men and women. We hugged and cried Saturday with the wives and children of men who have passed away. They died defending our freedom, whether you agree or not with the war in Iraq. They aren't the first, and I'm sure they won't be the last but it's shameful to me that these men and women are being over shadowed by celebrities and an abortion doctor.

American based, but not American exclusive. There's a food here that is filtered out because it's deemed to be a 'bad' word. I agree that in some context it is, but in the context of food, it isn't and the food was around long before the term was used about.

Ryanne, I agree with you. I think Mother Theresa did so much but her death was overshodowed by the death a few days earlier of the Princess of Wales. I know that neither is the same thing as Col. Reusser but the media tend to go for one person because...

It is not right.

I've found some good websites where I get a lot more military related news, and more on the economy and current events from some different (more conservative) perspective: www.freerepublic.com .... and www.Drudgereport.com .... both had several articles on the Colonel's death, for example. If interested, you might check them out.
