Ryanne MJ is in our media all over the place too, sometimes that's the first story of the night, and its like "seriously?". We have had 3 MJ specials, which were American made on this last week too....

Over MJ dying. Glad we aren't in LA anymore. The day it happened Jeremy wouldn't have gotten home in decent time because he worked around the corner from UCLA where it was all happening.

Ryanne, it saddens me too that there is so little press coverage around here for our troops. It's sickens me to elevate an abortion centers protection over the gunning down of our troops here on OUR SOIL. sick.

Mother Theresa was no saint in my book. She was actually pretty far from it if accounts I've read are true. She took the poverty vow a bit too far with those under her charge. I will agree that Princess Diana didn't need all the coverage.

Very skewed perceptions around this globe.

Ok.. in all honesty.. this site is AMERICAN based so why does TOS cover outside words so to speak? I've never understood that.. and yes, I know its the world wide web and all but I know where the company is based..

Well, we're not going to change tos to take away the word fanny. But I think the two B words are so offensive to those in Britain that we just don't allow it. That's just my guess, because when it's used, it's pretty much used in the same way it's used over there. (did that make sense?)

In fact, when I tried to look up one of the words in Encarta dictionary, I got a warning it was highly offensive, it's another way of saying F off.

(and just as an aside, the only time we can use terms such as F word or B word to imply the word itself is when we are discussing language. Otherwise, it is considered a TOS violation and will be written up as such. I didn't want anyone to think that because we can do it here while discussing vulgar language that it is acceptable in other parts of the community)

That doesn't really bother me to be honest, it's not something that I've picked up is used a lot in forums. I think the only time I've ever seen it used in in relation to fanny/bum bags.

I agree that it is sickening how little respect and coverage the military gets these days.

I never guessed that something I purchased at a Goodwill store would raise the eyebrows of those in other countries.

Honestly though, I'm not all that sure of what word y'all are talking about, so I probably should bow out of that part of the conversation.

The bag itself wouldn't raise eyebrows; just what you might call it would.

I find Canada's coverage of the military is fairly careful to follow deaths of servicemen, but sometimes for the wrong reasons. Most of our deployments are in Afghanistan and we don't normally send troops into such dangerous situations, so because our army is relatively small, each death is remarked upon. But then there's always a hue and cry about how we should pull out etc etc. So sometimes I think the coverage is thorough because those who think we should reduce our involvement want people to be horrified, which IMO cheapens their deaths.

Canada Day was great, thank you! I live in Ottawa (Canada's capital), so Canada Day is a real treat for us. I really think I'm blessed to live here.

DH and I went to church in the morning to set up; every year we give away water and invite people in to use our bathrooms (we're right downtown, close to all the events). Then we wandered around downtown, saw the Snowbirds fly by (a Canadian stunt-flying team), went to the Imax, and toured the Museum of Civilization. I love living in Ottawa. I can't think of the last time we had such a lovely, spur-of-the-moment day without being on vacation; it seems like when we're at home we're always busy with projects, so a day off from all that was great.

I was super-excited to see the Snowbirds properly for the first time. When I was in a choir that used to sing on the Hill for Canada Day, I always missed the Snowbirds because we couldn't see them from under the band shell. (Somehow I never minded--it's an acceptable tradeoff to sing for the Queen IMO! ) But this year we were on the bridge behind the Hill so we had an amazing view of them.

Fun fact: Canada was named a Dominion at Confederation in reference to Psalm 72:8, "He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth." I think we're still the only country that is still legally a Dominion.

George Stephanopolis(sp?) show on Sunday mornings always lists those who have died during the week. It's nice to see that kind of respect whether you agree with what's going on or not.

Fanny isn't so much a curse word or anything its just considered a little "rude" so I wouldn't take it out either. Just know that when you say it in Australia you will get sniggering

we get lots of local coverage, 'cause we're a huge military community in a small civilian community. The local news is always reporting on us.
The national news...don't get me started. I wouldn't even call mainstream media ''news'' anymore. It's pretty much national 'access hollywood'

This is a small town near me.

quote:

In the early 21st Century, fallen servicemen and women from the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places, having been repatriated to RAF Lyneham, usually pass through the town on their way to John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, in readiness for the coroner. Word is passed around the town, and as the cortege passes Wootton Bassett Town Hall and War Memorial, the townsfolk gather along the edge of the road in silent tribute. The mayor, councillors, town crier and service veterans are joined by shoppers and school children. A single bell tolls from the Parish Church, adding a suitably mournful and sombre note. Formalities have built around the event, and the cortege pauses for a moment to receive the town's tribute at the war memorial before moving on. On 12 October 2008, a parade was organised by the armed services to thank the town for their support

Whenever this happens, it is on the news ~ at least the local news ~ I don't always watch the national news.

Isn't that the truth. Ds said we shouldn't watch our the news because all they ever talk about is murder, rape and people getting "shanked.!" We've been watching alot of National Geographic and Discovery lately.

The news is shameful. I'm sad over the loss of life when celebrities die, but no more so than I am when anyone dies. I don't "get" all this celebrity worship. They're just people.

As for "bad language", not much bothers me. I don't like people calling other people names because it's disrespectful, or using words associated with God because, well, that's just blah... but other than that, not much offends me. I don't get replacement words. Especially since when you look them up in the dictionary, the "bad" word is the definition. I don't see words as "bad" or sinful. If anything is bad or sinful, it's the attitude in which they're used. Societies tend to make words bad when they weren't really. It's just all silly to me. I say a few choice words here and there, but not around children. And not around anyone, really, unless I know how they feel about it. People are so offended over anything these days.

So, the history channel has been showing some good documentaries on the American Revolution today. I love this period of our history, and I like the fact that the documentaries cop to the fact that the colonists were no angels, and the English were not demons. They were all just sinful humans.

One of my favorite moments was when John Adams decided to defend the British soldiers accused of the so-called "Boston Massacre", and for the most part Adams won the day. That was a tremendously gutsy and honorable move. But Adams had one heck of a wife advising him, so I'm sure that helped.

We did our good American deed and watched The Patriot last night! Do I dare admit that I now realize what the "right to bear arms" means. You saw it in the movie.

Was that a Mel Gibson movie? If it's the one I'm thinking of, that was a good movie.

It's good but gory.

Since the weather was way to yucky for fireworks last night we stayed home and watched movies. We watched Mary Poppins and Old Yeller. How's that for patriotism?

The Patriot is one of my most favorite movies, ever. I rewatched i again a few days ago and am thinking of doing so again tonight. (Yes, I love it that much.)

Do you mind explaining what you mean by that, exactly?

There's a scene where the towns men are gathering to form a Militia and that's when it hit me. It isn't about the right to own a handgun at all, BUT I really don't want to argue about it.

Would have been hard to form a militia without any arms to bear

DH was just talking this weekend about how a lot of people are predicting that another revolution will happen in our country at some point. Doesn't seem to far fetched considering the ignorance(especially in regards to Cap&Trade) coming out of the capitol right now.
