Okay, so NONE of our horror fans have seen or care to comment on the F13 remake? I saw it Saturday night, and what can I say....the FRIDAY formula still works almost 30 years later. It actually serves as a remake of the first three FRIDAY films, utilizing elements of all.... I would place the remake as light years better than sequels 3 through whatever the last one was, but not quite as good as the original or F13 PART 2 (which was the first one to feature Jason as the killer). My only gripe...the new F13 was directed by Marcus Nispel, who also directed the TEXAS CHAINSAW remake.....and it shows. The final fifteen minutes are literally lifted from TCM, which was a disappointing climax. If you're a fan of the mad slasher subgenre, or FRIDAY films in general, you'll enjoy this one. If not, then you can safely skip it and be none the worse for wear. And please, no "how on earth can a Christian watch that stuff?" posts. This is for Christian horror fans to comment on this movie, not for a discussion on horror films' spiritual worth...

I like horror movies as much as anyone, but I've always thought the Friday the 13th series was the epitome of everything that is awful about horror films. The entire series is just the same movie remade over and over and over again with all the same things happening over and over and over again. My reaction to them has never been moral outrage, just extreme boredom. So, yeah, I wasn't all that excited when I heard they were reviving the franchise. Although it was a massive success, so you can bet that there will be sequels to it, along with a host of remade 1980s horror films (Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, etc, etc, etc). I love horror films, but it's so rare that a good one comes out anymore as they are all either sequels or lazy rehashes of stuff from decades ago. The last good horror film I saw was "Let the Right One In," but before that, I'd have to go all the way back to "The Decent" (which is 2 or 3 years old now) to find anything worth seeing.

You're right, it mostly was teh same movie over and over, but I think the first two are actually pretty solid little horror flicks. Beginning with part 3, though, they began their descent into self parody. The later films are best enjoyed as black comedies, not real horror films...

My husband and I saw it at the drive-in last weekend. My husband appreciated being able to recognize several scenes that they redid from the earlier movies. I did notice that the remake had Jason being a bit more violent and tortureous than the 80's Jason was. And we thought it was funny that he was running in one scene, which he never did in the original movies. Overall, it was a good remake and a good horror/slasher movie. It certainly reminded me of the fun of watching those as a teen with all my friends, althought I won't be letting my teen watch it. She has seen one of the originals (#2 I think) and wasn't all that impressed. Kids!!!

Actually, Jason ran quite a bit in PART 2, when he was still a recognizeably human character. He also ran in several scenes in PART 3. He didn't become the slow, deliberate, lumbering zombie until FINAL CHAPTER and beyond...
