Plus St. John's isn't recommended for nursing women, or so I heard. Trust me, I'd be pretty careful before I actually took anything.

Ruth

Sorry if you've said this already, but have they checked your thyroid since you had Beth - and, if so, what were the results like, compared to your previous ones?

I don't know if you're aware, but I take special supplements, as well as my thyroxine. Some of what's in those is for adrenal support, as the adrenal system is often quite stressed when you're hypothyroid.

Do NOT take St.Johns wort while on birth control. It will render it ineffective. Ask me how I know
Omega 3 and flax are good natural additions to anything else you decide to take.

Yes, my thyroid levels have been checked recently and they're good. Thank you for asking.

I may try the fishy tablets, Sandy. Greg is taking them now for his good cholestrol levels.

Poor Beth woke at 5:15am and is just now crashed in my arms. She wouldn't go back to sleep and was tired (so is mama), but we're doing ok here.

You're welcome. Just curious - how do they compare with your previous results, numbers-wise?

I don't exactly remember, but the numbers are well within the normal range, so it can't be that drastic a change.

Ruth, I couldn't remember the definition of homeopathy so I looked it up on wikipedia ... it sounds quite kooky to me. I have occasionally used a homeopathic preparation for UTIs but with mixed results.

quote:

Homeopathy is a form of alternative medicine, first expounded by German physician Samuel Hahnemann in 1796, that treats patients with heavily diluted preparations which are thought to cause effects similar to the symptoms presented. Homeopathic remedies are prepared by serial dilution with shaking by forceful striking ("succussing") after each dilution under the assumption that this increases the effect of the treatment; this process is referred to as "potentization". Dilution often continues until none of the original substance remains.[1]

Apart from the symptoms of the disease, homeopaths use aspects of the patient's physical and psychological state in recommending remedies.[2] Homeopathic reference books known as repertories are then consulted, and a remedy is selected based on the index of symptoms. Homeopathic remedies are generally considered safe, with rare exceptions.[3] However, some homeopaths have been criticized for putting patients at risk with advice to avoid conventional medicine, such as vaccinations,[4] anti-malarial drugs,[5] and antibiotics.[6] In many countries, the laws that govern the regulation and testing of conventional drugs do not apply to homeopathic remedies.[7]

Claims of homeopathy's efficacy beyond the placebo effect are unsupported by the collective weight of scientific and clinical evidence.[8][9][10][11] Supporters claim that studies published in reputable journals support the efficacy of homeopathy; however, there are only a handful of them, they are not definitive, and they have not been replicated.[12] Several high-quality studies exist showing no evidence for any effect from homeopathy, and the few positive studies of homeopathic remedies have generally been shown to have problems that prevent them from being considered unambiguous evidence for homeopathy's efficacy.[8][10][11][13][14]

Homeopathic remedies generally contain few or no pharmacologically active ingredients,[15] and for such remedies to have pharmacological effect would violate fundamental principles of science.[16][17] Modern homeopaths have proposed that water has a memory that allows homeopathic preparations to work without any of the original substance; however, the physics of water are well understood, and no known mechanism permits such a memory.[17][18] The lack of convincing scientific evidence supporting homeopathy's efficacy[19] and its use of remedies lacking active ingredients have caused homeopathy to be described as pseudoscience[20] and quackery.

I used a "gripe water" remedy that was suggested to me for Aaron's "colic" that really seemed to work, and he really really loved it and would just suck it down out of the syringe (it had fennel in it and I thought it smelled awful!). Then I really read the ingredients and realized it had a LOT of alcohol in it. . . . oops No wonder he loved it.

I'm getting ready to go get my sleepy head out of his crib. He just woke up at 9:15am! Must be the trauma of losing all his hair I wish I knew how to post a pic on here just so you guys could commiserate with me!

Gripe water has lots of alcohol?? Oh ho that's bad! I mean, in a rather funny way ...

We want to see the poor little fellow's hairdo! What I did to post pics was create a photobucket.com account and upload the shot there then put the link in a post. Do it!

I shaved my boys' heads this year. I started Wes last year and decided to include Isaiah this year too. I think it's cute. I do it once and then they're done for the whole summer LOL.
I think a pic would be great

Ok, here it is. . . the first picture is him yesterday before the haircut, and the second is this morning.

Aaron Before His Haircut

Aaron's First Haircut

A friend of mine stopped by to pick her son up (he spent the night with my 12-year old) and she laughed and laughed and said it was sooo cute - it kind of made me look at it with a better view. I'm over being sad now, lol.

I used to keep all my boys heads buzzed. It costs a fortune for 4 (including dh) haircuts at the same time, and it really doesn't look any different to me, but now they are older and they fussed so much about it that I gave up. Now they go around looking like ragamuffins because they think it's "cool" to have long hair as a boy. Ugh, I hate it though. My hubby tells me to lighten up on them, it's only hair, but honestly I have a hard time with that. I think I might be a control freak.

Eh, you might be, but none of us is perfect. Some men look quite handsome with long-ish hair.

Aaron's cut looks just fine.

I greatly prefer my boys to have short Army-style haircuts. My 13 year old nephew has longish hair though, and is very cute with it. I am afraid of the day that my boys decide they want longer hair though.

Both of my children can have long hair when they are old enough to take care of it themselves. It wouldn't bother me if Nathan had shoulder length hair, so long as he kept it neatly. I'm not actually a fan of buzz cuts, though I understand the practicality of them. My dad had long hair as a teen, so he'd probably love for Nathan to go long. My brother never wanted a longer cut, and my dad was always a little bummed.

Jennleigh, I think he's so cute with that little buzz cut ... and he DOES look happier in the after photo than the before photo!

lol. My kids completely change looks about every 4-6 months. One day they're all wooly-headed, the next day they're nearly shaved.

They're watching Horton Hears a Whoo right now. I need to go fix dinner but I'm a bit fixated by the movie.

We're going to buy Josiah's plane tickets this evening (**freak out aaaahhhh!**). More things are coming up that make it important that he go. His family is *very* hungry right now. :( We can send money but he was explaining to me that because of the culture, even if he tells them it's for them only, it always ends up being begged by people around them. Much of the community is extended family. And culturally, if you have money, and someone needs something, you can't refuse, especially family. And of course, everybody knows he's in America and thinks he's rich, so his family's under a lot of pressure.
<Deep breath> I need to stop venting.

We have had such a nice day. The last couple of days have been gorgeous and I've been able to take the kids for nearly an hour to play at the park while I walk. That's such a great start to the day!! Love it!

Wow, being here and from here, it is hard to imagine people being hungry! Is Josiah safe there? Will people aggressively pursue him for money??

(((Maggie))) that would be so hard. How does Josiah cope knowing his family are hungry and having his hands tied in some respects?

Jenn I think the hair is just fine.

My son has curly hair so its not long, but it has some length. I don't like long hair on boys like to their shoulders etc, but Nath's hair goes to the base of his neck I guess, but he looks so adorable

All my boys have kinda longish hair, well, except for Aaron now LOL. One of the main reasons I don't like it is because me and the boys have very different ideas about what it means to "take care of it". My 11-year old always looks cute with long hair, as his hair is slightly wavy and thick. My oldest . . . well that's for another thread but he is obsessive about his hair and uses a straight iron to achieve the "anime" characters' look, which just looks to me like 80's punk hair. My 12-year old is just at the stage where he brushes it all forward and when it grows out it looks like he hasn't seen a brush in his life!

Thanks everyone for the kind words about Aaron's hair. I'm over the mourning of it. It really does look cute, and makes him look like a "baby" again to me, which I love.

Maggie, I'm sorry for all that you and your family are going through right now. I can't imagine the stress of it - my hubby was always just a few hours a way if anything major happened, he could come home in an emergency. I'm praying for you!!!

Alright ladies, I'm off to use up some of the calories I've been saving all day for my dinner out :)

I think Josiah can take care of himself there. I'm sure people will ask for money but he's great at saying "No" and he could care less about cultural "musts" of any kind, so he doesn't feel obligated to dole out money. But I can see it's frustrating to him that there isn't a way that his family can support themselves, or at the very least keep from having the money just kind of "disappear".

Let's see, tomorrow I have *nowhere* to go. Yay!!!!!! Take an early walk, do some cleaning, and then maybe enjoy the sunshine in the yard with our boys. We actually have a few piddly little beans and peas and tomatoes growing. Lots of fun to watch.

Maggie, I think your husband is blessed to have such a capable, strong woman taking care of his children and estate while he is away. You're a great asset to Josiah, and I'm sure he's relieved that you've "got his back".
