Jennifer(room2grow)- Where is the zoo? Is there one in Pittsburg?

When we went to the zoo in April we had an "interesting" experience with the gorillas too. One of them was sitting right in front of the glass eating his poop!! He was catching it as it came out and eating it. EWWWW!!

Yay, Rachel! I've been perusing vacation sites trying to decide what we want to do... I think we've settled on renting a condo in San Juan for a week over Thanksgiving.

We haven't had a holiday (vacation) in 4 years (the year Dave was made redundant), so this year, we're going to use some of our savings to have a week's holiday in St. Ives, Cornwall (UK of course!). Cornwall is the most western county of the UK, down in the south-west corner.

We've found a nice little old fisherman's cottage just 5 minutes walk from 3 sandy beaches which is free the last week of June; it's granite, with a bright red front door, in a cobbled street, has 3 bedrooms and our dog is welcome too. It's 4 hours' drive from here, which isn't too bad either!

That looks gorgeous, Manda!!

We haven't booked anything yet, we are still trying to decide what/where we want to go. I wouldn't mind going somewhere within driving distance of my parents and having everyone come along, we would just book a couple days in a hotel on our own then :) But Micah wants to be able to snorkel, so it's looking like Belize or Puerto Rico since Mexico seems a bit unsafe for travel right now.

Manda, that looks like a beautiful area! That will be a nice vacation I'm excited for you guys! We've never had a real holiday. We've stayed at places close to home for up to 3 nights, but never an actual holiday. We're going to Victoria, BC in July. At first we were going to leave our dogs at home with my parents, but we decided that we would rather have them with us. If we left them for a week we'd both be sad. So we cancelled the English garden room that we were going to be staying in (it was a gorgeous room with a door out into the gardens) and will stay in a small cabin instead. It won't be fancy, but it will be fun and feel more like camping which will be nice. We need to book that right away! We'll be going away for 6 nights total. The drive is 12 hours or more so we will drive half way and stay in a hotel there and back. I'm excited! Our dogs will love coming with us rather than staying at home. I told Lorne that I am buying them new harnesses and collars for our trip. My parents are going to stay in our house and watch our pets. If they can't stay the whole time we'll ask a guy that Lorne works with to check on them.

Oh, and Lorne's Oma and Opa are paying for a holiday for the entire family to go to Mexico sometime this year or next year. It will be a week long trip and they are paying for absolutely everything! So now we are hoping it works out that someone can watch our pets. It's still a long ways away so I'm trying not to think about it too much yet. My mom already said that she could watch our pets if my dad can get the same week off so that's nice.

Nicole- That is a seriously cute bunny!! How many pets do you have now and how many of each kind?

David's eczema has gotten so bad. When he got up this morning the collar of his shirt was covered in blood from where it was rubbing on one of the patches. I felt so bad for him I cried. He has been scratching a lot and earlier today he made his tummy bleed even though his nails are cut really short and he had clothes on.

Nicole, you all might want to do some research on the current um... "climate"(not the weather) in Mexico right now. It's baaad. Not sure I would want to go there now, let alone next year.

Emily, what are you putting on his skin?

Emily, thanks! The owners sent me pictures of the bunnies and he and a pure black one were the cutest. He was my first choice so they saved him for me. We have 21 pets now. 2 dogs, 3 cats, 3 hamsters, 5 snakes, 2 mice, 2 gerbils, 2 guinea pigs, 1 rabbit and 1 bird. 4 of the 5 snakes are Lorne's and the small pets besides the rabbit are mine.

((((((((((( David)))))))))))) Poor baby! That is so terrible Emily. Is there something out there that can help him out? I have never heard of eczema being so bad.

Ryanne, I heard that it's bad in some areas, but would it be bad in Puerto Vallarta? I think that's where they want to go. I already told Lorne that if it doesn't feel safe I am NOT going. I'd rather just stay at home. I'm not interested in Mexico. I'd rather travel to New Zealand, Australia or England, but it's free. So really... if I don't get to go I won't be heart broken.

I put lotion on him 4 or 5 times a day. Sometimes I use Aveeno Baby lotion but I usually use the Arbonne baby lotion. I also put hydrocortisone cream on the really bad spots.

I'm mostly ready for daylight savings, but wish it was a week later, seeing as we have to be on the hihghway by 6am Sunday morning ... I guess I'll have to go to bed an hour early Saturday night.

Emily, Isaac's eczema is really bad in the winter and has been since he was a baby. It's always all over his trunk. I've found Gold Bond works the best on him (I've used the Aveeno, Arbonne and also hydrocortizone). Bless David's little heart!

I think I would go crazy with that many pets. I have 1 dog and she drives me bonkers!! LOL!! My sister on the other hand would LOVE to have all of those animals. The snakes would freak her out though. Do you have to feed them live mice? She still lives with my parents now so she only has a golden retriever, a yellow lab mix, and a chinchilla. She is planning to go to school to be a vet.

We're taking our dog with us, but will have to leave the cat in a cattery up the road, and find someone to come in and look after our 4 bunnies and 3 chickens! That's proving quite hard at the moment.

What kind of Gold Bond? I just looked on their website and there are a lot of different kinds.

Do you know what triggers his eczema? Is it an allergy? I think David's might be a dairy allergy. It started around the time I started giving him formula. I feel so bad about not trying harder to nurse. Now my little boy has to suffer through this eczema because I couldn't deal with the pain and keep trying to nurse.

Chris had really severe eczema too, but his mom says he grew out of it when he was 5 or 6.

Oh wow... so he has it pretty bad. That's so sad. I looked up baby eczema to see how common it is for babies. It sounds pretty common from mild to severe. Are there any specific lotions for babies to help with eczema? I know that a lot of adults get it and nothing will help them. Do you think a humidifier in his room would help? We have a built in humidifier in this place and I've noticed that my skin doesn't get near as dry now.

Look at the ingredients in both of those, I would stop using them. Use straight olive oil or coconut oil, Lanolin is also good and you probably already have that at home. I like the California Baby Calendula balm for my eczema, and it's almost entirely natural(unlike Aveeno or Arbonne- advertising scams on both their parts).

The California Baby body wash, lotion, and balm all seem to make him worse. I have tried the coconut oil, but it didn't work any better than the lotions. All the lanolin did was stain things, it didn't help either. I really just want to find out what is causing it so I can eliminate that from his diet or environment.

My mom has one dog and one cat and goes crazy with them. You have to be a pet lover with lots of patience to own the amount of pets that we do. Pets are my passion. I love them and love to take care of them. Believe it or not, but cleaning their cages is relaxing. I just turn the TV on and clean. It's cute to see a small animal act all excited to get new shavings, food and water! If I'm having a bad day I always feel better when one of our pets is given something that makes it happy. We feed our snakes frozen and thawed mice only. We would never be able to feed them live mice. That would kill us. My 2 mice were rescued from being food. I'm planning on breeding mice or hamsters sometime this year. I've been reading about it a lot and want to try it at least once. My mom wants me to breed hamsters so I can give her one and Lorne wants me to breed mice because he isn't scared of mice and wants his own.

Some cat kennels are just awesome looking! We're lucky cuz our cats have their own area under the front entrance hallway and stairs. It's set up with cat houses, blankets and a ton of toys. So we would only need someone to check on them 3 times while we're gone. Our guinea pigs and other small pets can be given extra shavings and food and water and be checked on about 3 times in a week too. If my parents can't stay another guy will watch them. But yes, it's so hard to find someone to look after our pets. We knew it would be hard, but for us we'd rather have a lot of pets all year long than to be able to go away maybe once every couple of years. We love pets too much and try our best to make holiday's work out. I hope you find someone to look after your bunnies and chickens! I had no clue you had those. Cool!

mmmm California Baby Calendula. I LOVE IT. I used it on my face when we went to Denver and I got super dried out. GREAT stuff Emily.

Slather, sit and let it soak in.

With my kids, I use a cool mist humidifier and SpectroKids Eczema Care wash and lotion. It helps minimize the redness and itching. I assume you can get it in the US as well, since things like that seem to be released there before they come to Canada.

I had a lot of hamsters when I was little. My sister and I would both get one at the same time and hers would die after a few weeks and mine would live forever. Snowball lived for 5 years!! We also had a few bunnies. I was always scared the hamsters and bunnies would bite me, but they never did. I did have a hermit crab pinch me one time. That HURT!!

Chatty people in here today!

got everything almost set for the party. Some friends and I will go set up tomorrow morning. I am trying to watch my calories today and through the day tomorrow so I don't put on a stack of weight with just one night of eating!!

I don't like daylight savings, no matter when it is, with kids it never works out for your benefit as they are used to waking up at a certain time. Its ok once they are old enough to get up and sit and do their own thing.

Emily-poor David!

Rachel- your cruise sounds great!! So summer when is that? Didn't you just have summer?

I would love to go down the Great Ocean Road in victoria for a holiday but I don't see that happening any time soon I really wanted it to be our honeymoon we never had and get away and have some good quality time with one another.

I always had hamsters too! My brother always had a hamster or fish. We usually had one dog, one cat, a bird, a bunny and then a couple hamsters growing up. I was the only one that played with them all the time.

Lorne and I joke that when we have kids that are old enough to get their own pets they will be sad because they won't be able to think of anything to get that we don't already have. Wow!!! I've never had a hamster live for more than 3 years. 5 years is awesome! I always thought my hamsters would bite me, but none of them have. Actually the only pets of ours that bite are my gerbils. We were told that gerbils don't bite, but they both do. They don't bite hard, but it's annoying enough for us to not be able to hold them. I'm hoping they outgrow it. I had to separate them right after I got them because they started to fight. They're sisters so I don't know why they hate each other so much. LOL about the hermit crab pinch. I had 2 hermit crabs and always wondered if they'd try to pinch me or not. I'm thinking about maybe getting another hermit crab. I would only get one since the last ones were gross. The one came out of its shell in the middle of the night and before it could get into a larger shell the other one shredded it. It was so gross!
