Rachel- your cruise sounds great!! So summer when is that? Didn't you just have summer?

Lol! We are *almost* done with winter... maybe.

Summer is May-August, Fall is Aug-Oct, and Winter is November-March. Spring around here is only really April, although different places in the country have different season lengths.

David's eczema has gotten so bad. When he got up this morning the collar of his shirt was covered in blood from where it was rubbing on one of the patches. I felt so bad for him I cried. He has been scratching a lot and earlier today he made his tummy bleed even though his nails are cut really short and he had clothes on.

First, have you talked to his dr. about it? If not, you probably should.

Okay, second. My niece had/has pretty severe eczema due to her allergies (both food and environmental); and my kids have all had eczema in varying degrees. For the itching, sometimes drs recommend benadryl -- although you should probably talk to your dr. about that. For flare ups, hydrocortizone is an otc treatment (also, should be used with the drs permission). One of the other products that we have found helpful is Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream -- it's 'fragrance free' but it has a pretty strong smell, very 'green' smell. Also, one of the best things for it is sunlight.

Oh goodness! All this talk about Zoo's has me itching to get our zoo pass and be ready to go when the zoo opens in April! I absolutely love the zoo!

Nicole- michelle! I have a gerbil question but I'll PM you! My daughter has 2 little gerbil friends. We are having a problem with one of her critter friends.

DS is doing much better! His fever was back to normal as of early this morning so I think we'll send him back to school tomorrow.

STILL working on science fair projects! These are definitely more work for Mom and Dad then they are for the kids!

Brian is considering taking Ethan and Zoe to the school sponsered skating party tonight. I hope he does take them. I've always say no to these things in the past because he's been working those evenings and I didn't want to take all the kids on my own or the events have conflicted with other things.

Blessings,

Garsy

I love zoos! We were at the Anchorage Zoo last August, the Honolulu Zoo in December, and our very own Zoo in January, lol. Next zoo visit? We're visiting the Dublin, Ireland Zoo in May! (We've been to some aquariums in there, too!) I still think that the Buenos Aires and London and San Diego Zoos are my favorites, though. (Though the New Orleans Zoo was nice pre-Katrina!)

I have laundry in the wash that I need to get in the dryer .... keep forgetting to do that! Hmmm.... could it be some sort of spring fever? Or have I finally turned senile? I do have a birthday coming up in less than two weeks ... oh well!

Our summer starts May 1 and runs through Oct 1.... five months of H O T. We'll see at least 40 days over 100 and at least a week or so over 105 ... and usually that means 110-115. Ick.

Is the Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream the one with Pooh bear on it? IF so, we have some of that. It is really greasy and don't seem to make much difference either. The weather is supposed to be really nice tomorrow so we are going to go outside so he can get a little sun.

Emily, I think that you need something stronger than the lotions/creams at this point. I think that the Gentle Naturals has Pooh on it (mine doesn't, but I bought it a few years ago--and we don't use much of it).

Um, if he is scratching to the point of bleeding, he needs to be seen sooner. Can you talk to an advice nurse or something?

Emily- yes, Pittsburgh has a very nice zoo- if you go in and turn left, it is a loop and when you have seen everything, you are back at the beginning and don't have to go up *the* hill (there is one spot where there used to be a path that went.straight.up- but they redesigned that... it was fun to race up and beat the old folks, I mean, parents... Do you use fabric softener? That always seems to make the skin flare up worse. My brother also does much better since mom started using free and clear soaps too... Poor David...

Emily, that is a loooong wait to see a doctor. Maybe try Gold Bond? I dunno. I just hope you find something that can help him out. How upsetting for you.

Garsy, so glad to hear that your son is feeling better! Praise God! I mean... your lil fella I pm'd you back.

Have you tried eliminating dairy?

I have a question about presents. What do you say if the present someone gives you is not appropriate or you have it already? Like I am scared I will get more earings (someone has already given me some and I don't have them pierced) or a watch (my mother and sister have bought me one).

You could just thank them and give the gift to someone that has their ears pierced or whatever. That's what we did when our neighbor brought us a bottle of wine last weekend. We thanked her for the gift and then gave it to my parents later on. We don't know her so we didn't want to tell her that we don't drink. If we get to know her then she'll find out. We were just happy that she thought of us. If you think about it gifts aren't important. In all honestly no one really deserves gifts so they are just a bonus in life.

How about trying a new laundry soap? I can only use Purex After the Rain. All other soaps give me a terrible rash. I also do not use fabric softener and I buy scent free dryer sheets. I read that you could use the softest sheets and blankets for David. That could help soothe his dry skin

I am talking about a gift that is hundreds of dollars from family members that will expect you to wear them.... I think its different if it was just a cd or a book or something.

Same answer Nicole.

Or tell them thanks but no thanks and give it back.

Or wear it and deal with the hideousness that it entails.

Or don't wear it and deal with the questions.

Lots of choices.

Me? I'd give it away. It's a gift to you, not a conditional agreement set up in a blood pact oath to wear/use it all costs.

I use Charlie's Soap and no dryer sheets. I have tried other detergents, but haven't noticed a difference.

I can't eliminate dairy until I see his doctor. The only dairy he gets is formula and we get that through WIC. They cannot give us different formula until we get a doctor's note. I tried calling and having them write me a note but they said they can't until they see him.

There is no way I can get an earlier appointment. They said they would call me if they have a cancellation, but since I don't have a car I wouldn't be able to get there anyway.

Oh, bummer you can't get in right away, Emily. And don't be hard on yourself about not nursing -- I nursed Isaac and he still had eczema. A lot of it is probably hereditary, he might have your hubby's skin. The Gold Bond I use for Isaac is Ultimate Healing. It's in a pearly white bottle with blue letters. It made a noticeable difference almost immediately. I tried coconut oil, lanolin and straight olive oil (for weeks at a time) and it didn't help, either.

At the risk of stating the obvious, can't you just buy some non-dairy formula for him?

How much formula is he having btw? (By 8 months, mine were having 3 bottles per day.)

Or if you get offered an earlier appointment, maybe a member of your family or a friend from church could take you. Waiting over a month is an awfully long time to have to wait - do they realise that David is bleeding from the ezcema? If it was me, I'd keep calling twice a day till I got an earlier appointment.

Hey ladies.

If you could think of Aryn tonight I would appreciate it. She is dealing with the loss of a pet. Her pet gerbil Annie had a stroke sometime in the last 24 hours and died tonight. We are 95% sure it was a stroke as all the symptoms and signs were there. Annie died tonight. Aryn is miserable. When Aryn is miserable she bakes so she went to make these delicious bars and the mixer decides to die as well. She is just heartbroken. To top it off she has to go to school tomorrow as they are finishing up state testing AND she has a job interview for a unit they are working on for Social Studies.

Emily - My kid's pediatrician always sets aside several hours a week for situations like this. I've had to call in twice this week for emergency appointments for the boys and have never had any trouble. I have more trouble getting regular well child/physical appointments. I'm like Manda tho - If there is blood in the mix and I can't give him any relief, I'm calling til I get the help he needs!

Blessings,

Garsy
