Well, my 5 year old girl told once "I'm tired of doing what you say! I am not going to be your daughter anymore..."

This isn't really a funny/cute thing, but I think it is so special.

Background: On Friday (May 15) we had to put down our old horse--36 years old. He had colic'd and developed pneumonia.... I'd had the horse for 34 years. My son was riding this horse from the time he was old enough to sit in the saddle, first with me leading then on his own from the time he was 3 or 4 (supervised, of course).

When I came back in the house after the vet left my son (age 8) was on the sofa crying his eyes out. I asked him if he wanted to plan a memorial for the horse. He said yes, and he wanted to invite friends over. Then he said he wanted me to write down a poem about the horse that we could read at the memorial. This is what he dictated:

Red was such a good horse,
He was living for so many years.
But on this day he passed away
He really broke our hearts

Oh, Creation, that is sad and sweet. I'm sorry for the loss of your dear horse.

When she was two, our youngest was spied playing with a tape measure. She carefully explained, "I am pretending that I am measuring something big and invisible."

getting ready for church one evening I asked my son to pick out some jewelry to go with my dress. He showed up with a necklace and a pair of "cobra" (as in snake--date back to my early college years) earrings. I told him I wasn't sure the earrings were appropriate for church...he said I had to wear them because

"They'll make you look like an Egyptian princess."

I wore the earrings.

My daughter sang, "Jesus loves the little children, all the children of the world--red, brown, yellow, black and white--and purple!"

Another daughter, almost 3, brought me a cricket. "This is a friend cricket," she said, and then, noting the long antennae, said, "He has antlers!"

My husband recently shaved off his beard (he does this every spring/summer)....when he came to breakfast the next morning, my 6 year old son said "Oh no...Daddy's face is bald!"

DS on Mother's Day: He gives me 4 plastic cups. I just smile and thank him but am trying to figure out why he gave me that. There were 2 big ones for DD1 and I and 2 smaller ones for dd2 and him and he even selected the colors especially for each of us.

Eventually I asked my mom about it since she took him shopping. She said that he had the idea in his head that we needed cups/glasses and since it wasn't something totally junky she let him do it because he was so insistent that that was what I needed. Now, the only reason I can think that he had this idea in his head is that occasionally I will tell them all that there are no cups in the cupboard...but that's because they take a drink to bed with them and all have 3-4 glasses at the side of their bed. It's not that we don't have enough.

This isn't cute or funny, but my oldest daughter Angelface (who is 18) wrote her dad a poem for Father's Day since she had to leave on a mission trip the day before..and is leaving for college in August (she will be 1700 miles away!)....she made herself cry when she wrote it, it made me cry when I read it, and my hubby, who never cries, almost cried (swallowed hard a LOT) when he got it on Father's Day......

Here it is:

To my Dad

I have so many things for which to be glad
One of the noblest is my dad.
Beyond all compare is his love for me,
For I am his only firstborn you see.

Cradled safe in the crook of his arm,
I have never had to truly fear harm.
Dancing on his toes I've twirled,
He is my daddy, and I am his girl.

I'm going away, the distance won't be small,
But I know that I need only to call
To hear his voice and feel a little less sad.
I sure do love you. Happy Father's Day, Dad.

Love,
Angelface.

W.O.F. that is so sweet.

Yesterday, 2 of the grandkids found a toad in front of the apartment. I thought they turned it loose and never said anything about it.
This morning, I asked gs what they did with the toad. He went outside and came back in a few minutes later.
He said "Do you know where the toad was Grandma? It was in your cooler!" Guess I forgot to bring the cooler inside.

ETA, the toad was still alive so I made sure it was released in a safe place this time!
