Maybe it's because LOTR was never intended to be a "Christian themed" anything. Tolkien repeatedly stressed this fact. Just because it's good vs. evil doesn't make it Christian themed.

Huh? This is news to me.

I guess the whole thing with Gandalf sacrificing his life for his friends and returning as the White Wizard threw me. Oh, and Frodo travelling to the Undying Lands (Heaven?) after completing the task he was given. That threw me, too.

What are your favorite Christian themed movies and what do you love about them, what makes them your favorite?

Hard Core, an R-rated remake of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, with a Calvinist perspective.

John Candy's Delirious, a meditation on the incarnation that amusingly demonstrates God's wisdom in having Jesus play a cameo role in his time.

the apostle is another good movie. i didn't like bruce almighty. the things jim carrey did with God's powers were really unimaginative. i think it would have worked better as a book, so you could expand the possibilities more.

Seconded, thirded, and more.
I like the way this movie tells the gospel story by showing its effect on the life of the centurion. It's not preachy, and it went into different territory where dozens of other movies had already covered the life of Christ. This movie was one that impacted my walk more than any other. Sure, JCS was cool, and the biblical epics were dramatic, but this was somehow more realistic, and well though-out.
Also, for you movie history buffs, it was also the first movie to use Technicolor.
To this day, Jay Robinson is the only actor I can picture as Caligula.
This movie is an Easter tradition in my household now, and has been for the last 18 years.

I always enjoyed the Thief In The Night series, just for their pure cheesiness. A Thief In The Night has my favorite cheesy line of all time. A preacher is trying to talk about the rapture and tribulation to a bunch of uninterested 70's youths. One of them tells a girl he's dating that she can't go in the rapture because he says so and he's the anti-christ. She replies with "I've always been a sucker for beasts." Classic cheese.

I am not a fan of Christian themed movie as most of them are just poorly done. But there is one that still is considered by non christians and christians alike on of the greatest films of all time.

1. BEN HUR . . . . nothing comes close, nothing.

2. Evan Almighty

3. The LOTR Trilogy, folks who try to take away from the Christian themes of Tolkein's works are akin to folks who would try to Christianize Quientin Tarantino's works.

I don't think so. Abuse them for his own selfish purposes is what we would do with GOD'S power, I know I would. I think that point was shown and the failure of it. GOD'S power has consequences.

Fireproof, Facing the Giants, and Flywheel. They were all filmed by the same church and the actors in them are members of that church so a lot of the actors for those three movies are in all three. Kirk Cameron from Growing Pains was the lead in Fireproof.

Does Saved! count? Well, I say it counts. One of my favorite movies ever.

Otherwise... every Christian movie I have seen is terrible. Although that silly end-times movie with Mr T is highly amusing from a pure unintended comedy standpoint. Totally blanking on the title of it. But it is Mr T. Gotta be amusing.

"Amazing Grace" was really good.

I thought "The Wager" wasn't that great, actually. I enjoyed the book, but not the movie. Same with "The Visitation". The book was awesome, but the movie was terrible. I did like "Three", though. T

The Passion of the Christ, Fireproof, The Wager, One Night With the King, and The Second Chance. Saving Sarah Cain is made by Christians but I don't know if you would call it Christian themed.
