The ones I went to with the dog before smart dog were younger guys who ran a huge operation. The assistants would come in ahead of the vet with a huge laminated menu of services and then try to either guilt you or hard sell you into all kinds of crazy tests and procedures like EKG's just b/c the dog was over a certain age.
I hate it when vets do that........how is smart dog doing?

He is getting very tired, he is still coming to work with me and he will not sleep here at work. I guess he thinks he'll miss something. Otherwise he is alright but still wearing his bandage and after a conversation with the vet I found out he needs to wear it even longer than I thought. So I will be looking for the horse tape Pruned talked about. Blueeyeedgirl2 suggested a different method of wrapping his foot which has worked a lot better but think I need to find something that will stay on for 24 hours since he will need to wear a bandage for 10 more days.

Could you see about getting a mild sedative or something for him, to help him relax and possibly nap while he's at work with you? We have to do this to one of my mum's dogs when they come to my house. He doesn't sleep well when my mum is not around so when I have them he takes a mild sedative and sleeps through the night.

I've cried like a river and moved my precious to a family member.

Once I just said "Thank God!" He got custody of the cat. I got custody of the son. I preferred the son.

it seems i need to find a new home for my callie.

the mum won't put up with her for another two years.

if i could find someone to babysit her for a week so she could get fixed then we'd just let her be outdoors...but since mum won't check up on her that means we've got to get rid of her...a pretty lame thing if you ask me. but that's the way it is.

Linus may be in liver failure from his meds ... he has been going downhill again, rather quickly. It's so hard to know what to do. I could not take off work to get him to the vet, but will bring him when I get off. The thing I am afraid of is I will not be able to afford the treatment which means ... I am very sad right now. Came back to check on him and he was doing a little better ... but I need to go back to work.

Oh, Karen, I'm so sorry. Is he in any pain? What's his prognosis? Even if he had the treatment, what would his quality of life be like? I think these are things you need to ask the vet.

Praying for you and Linus, Karen: Father, You know how dear Linus is to our sweet sister. We trust on her behalf that You are guiding her to make the best decision for him. And we know that You are her comfort, her strength, her wisdom. Thank You for how You provide. Thank You for what You are doing in this situation. Thank You for what You will do. And thank You for how You sweetly minister to us through Karen. And if it be Your will that Linus be healed and live here longer, we would be so glad for Karen and so grateful to You!

Thank y'all for the prayers. I took him for a complete neuro evaluation today and they believe he has a degenerative polyneuropathy disease where his immune system is attacking the myelin in his nerves. It is similar to Multiple Sclerosis and ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in humans. There is no cure for it, and they really do not know much about it as there is very little research. Most dogs deteriorate much faster than Linus has ... and he seems to go into remissions often. He is doing much better today, but is tuckered out from the 2 1/2 hour exam. They have a very well known Neuro specialist on staff and I was in the brainstorming session (it is a teaching hospital ... was only $42) ... it was kinda like an episode on house ... but the patient was a dog and the doctors were vets … and the expert was much kinder. I thought that was what it might be ... the only way to truly confirm it is to put him through a battery of painful tests with the end result telling me there is no cure.

So we will continue as is for now. The meds for his epilepsy (which does not seem to be related and is still not controlled) contribute somewhat and we will be looking into alternative medicines. It is tricky because whenever you lessen the dose of an anti-seizure medication, you run the risk of having a fatal seizure … so the new ones need to be in place as we bring the old ones down … which means he could have issues with having too many medications at some point as we change them. In the meantime I am searching God’s word about dogs and other animals being with us in heaven … I saw a teaching once that used scripture in a very convincing way for that argument … but I want to know what it really says. It is not a decision I need to make today, which I am very grateful.

Karen, I'm glad that you and Linus were treated with such care. I'm glad he's doing better today.
