Couple questions: 1. Has anybody here given their (over one year old) baby goat's milk as a substitute for cow's milk? 2. Ryanne, it was mentioned to me that possibly you gave your daughter diluted yogurt as a substitute for cow's milk? If that is indeed the case, could you tell me a little about that? The reason I ask is that our son is now 12 months old and we're looking to add some [non-cow's milk] dairy into his system. Just for our own reasons we don't want him on cow's milk just yet so we are looking for alternatives and my husband and I are very curious to find out what some women here have possibly added instead. Just wondering. FYI, he still nurses many times a day (I'm not sure how many, I don't count -- it used to be 6 or 7 but now I bet some days it's more like 8 times a day -- he's teething so he wakes up once, sometimes twice a night and he is legitimately hungry). Last week we started giving him watered down, organic yogurt. He loves it. This has us thinking more about milk alternatives, and I don't think we're willing to do soy milk at this point. Just wondering. (I already said that, huh?) Thanks for any info you have to share, Jeanie

We do watered down whole milk yogurt for Gabby, she gets maybe 15ish ounces a day? We aren't fans of milk or soy milk(I'm anti any soy except for fermented) and goat's milk is GROSS. Seriously, it's awful. Maybe if you can get fresh it wouldn't be so bad but I would rather drink breastmilk, no joke. I have been making our own yogurt since we go through so much of it, I add a small squirt of agave nectar and either vanilla or maple flavoring since plain yogurt is kind of tart. Seedless berry jams are also a good alternative that we have used on occasion but it's hard to find seedless ones that aren't full of HFCS. Oh, and I pour a pint of cream into Gabby's crockpot of yogurt. So it's about 1/2 gallon of milk + 1 pint of cream. It's about equal nutritionally to the whole milk, cream top yogurt we had been purchasing. So far we are very happy with the results and she hasn't had any GI issues like she does with straight milk(that my MIL has given her). Oh, and we use growth hormone free, but not organic milk. I don't know if that makes any difference to ya... If you want to know how to make the yogurt then let me know, it's super easy. Oh, and our ped who is exceptionally natural minded(you would probably adore him, Jeanie) said that what we are doing is perfect and he's glad we aren't doing straight milk

Why no soy, Ryanne? Allergies?

Partly allergies, and partly because of it's estrogenic properties. I've seen in my own body how soy affects my menstrual cycle and a lot of other studies have suggested that it can cause problems with the thyroid(especially for those that are already on synthroid or who are genetically prone to issues) and since I have thyroid nodules already... It's also used to treat symptoms of menopause, which suggests to me that it's estrogenic properties are stronger then some people would like us to think. Fermented soy, however, does not seem to cause as many of those problems.

I would love the yogurt recipe, if you don't mind. Adam LOVES yogurt.....he's only had it for a week but goodness he gets bummed out when it's gone. (Tonight he was bummed out when his sweet potatoes were gone - loves those, too.) We did buy Goat's Milk last night from Whole Foods. It is from a farm here in Minnesota and is pasteurized but fresh. I tried it first and it tasted just fine to me, to be honest. Now, cow's milk makes my nose run so I don't drink it anymore (but I love milk!) and when I did drink it I was drinking skim, but I will drink 1% or 2% or skim on a rare occasion - maybe half a glass. So the goat's milk seemed to be like 2% to me in thickness but really -- what we had was NOT bad. And guess what? Adam LOVED it! He was making the FUNNIEST noises of approval and then, honest to goodness, he did one of those "Ahhhhh" sounds with his lips - DH and I were cracking up. He was bummed out, too, when it was done, so maybe we just have a really good provider of it in this local brand? Anyhow, we had good luck with it and I was prepared to dump the whole thing out if it were nasty (which I was expecting). We'll go slowly with it but so far, so good. Rambling again, but thanks for the info and send me the recipe! Jeanie

I'd like the recipe too! So, you feed her the watered down yogurt instead of milk? That's her liquid?

Hmm. I'll have to track down some fresh Goat's milk and see if it tastes better, I tried the Meyenberg brand which is actually what I drank as an infant/toddler. It was the whole milk version, perhaps that added to the ick factor, lol. THESE are the directions I used, it's really easy. - I add 1 pint of heavy cream to Gabby's(although you don't have to do this) - Micah likes his thick, so I add about 1/2-3/4 of a cup powdered milk - I like mine Greek style, so I strain it through a coffee filter(I make mine and Micah's from the same batch, Gabby's is separate because of the cream) It really has been great making our own yogurt because we all like it different ways. It's also been much more cost effective then buying organic yogurt and especially better then buying Greek yogurt which can run $4.50 for less then a quart. Oh, and without the powdered milk it does turn out pretty runny, I don't even need to water it down for Gabby, which is good because then she gets maximum calories and nutrition. She also likes it mixed with granola for breakfast. Janine, I don't really *feed* it to her, I just put it in her sippy cup like milk. She gets about 15-20oz a day of yogurt and everything else is water.

Caden loves yogurt too. He's had small amounts of milk that have been cooked (like in cream of wheat). We don't do it often, but cooking it does break down those proteins so it helps. Well, I know this topic comes up every so often in here, so I hope you don't mind it coming up again... Biting. Grrr. He's started biting me while nursing the last week or so. He used to do it only very rarely. I would immediately take him off, tell him "don't bite" and set him on the floor. Well, now that he is crawling, the floor thing doesn't work, so I just hold him in my lap and won't let him nurse for a minute. I think maybe he's getting a bit better, but my let-down is slower b/c I'm so nervous and that makes him want to bite even more. Anyway, any suggestion on how to stop the biting quickly?

Lily - good luck. The older Jadon's gotten the worse the biting is. The thumping worked for a while, but now he just cries like he's been hurt if I thump, flinch, gasp in pain, or tell him no sternly. He's gotten really sensitive.

You should take him off *EVERYTIME* he bites you and tell him no more milk. Put your breast away and tell him he can have it back when he won't bite you. If he bites again when you put him back do the same thing. Consistency is the key with all forms of discipline.

It doesn't take hard flick, as you found out. It is merely the fact that it is a deliberate response that is negative. Hopefully you won't need to use it again.

Question: My sister's baby girl is now 4 days old. She was delivered vaginally and with some drugs given to my sister during delivery but nothing unusual. The baby is very sleepy and is having a hard time waking up to nurse, even when my sister gives her a squirt of milk. They've tried nursing her while she wears only a diaper, squirting milk into baby's mouth for a taste, making sure my sister's milk has letdown before baby gets to the breast (baby is impatient)... Any other ideas? My sister is struggling with this. The hospital, of course, ran to her aid with a bottle of formula. My sister is tired from the delivery and newness (first baby) and wants to nurse but needs to know what else to try. My mom had 8 of us kids and nursed us all so she is right there helping with this, I have given her tons of advice, our other sister that has nursed babies has called from out of state with advice. I would love some advice from you ladies for her on what works/worked for you with a sleepy newborn. As you know, time is of the essence in getting this nursing relationship back on track. (I would also so very much appreciate your prayers. My sister's name is Jessie and her baby girl is Hayley.) Thank you! Jeanie

Is she jaundiced? Gabby was sooo sleepy, I would change her diaper, wipe her with a wet washcloth, or hold her in front of the freezer. She was *very* jaundiced(had a NICU stay for it, even) and that contributed to her sleepiness.

Beth was such a sleepy head. We had trouble the first few days as well. Honestly the only thing that worked at first was to strip her down to her diaper and run a cold cloth over her body. Sounds kinda mean, but we had to do it. She grew out of it. By two months old she was a very chubby baby, stayed awake most of the day and slept the night (usually).

Beth was slightly jaundiced, but never enough to worry the doctors. She did loose over 10% of her body weight, though, enough to worry the docs. Hard to believe she used to have such skinny, stick-like legs.

Malcolm wouldn't wake up to eat in the hospital, either. I had 2 LC and 3 nurses try to help me and they all gave up (muttering "well, this usually works" as they left the room ) He was jaundiced and lost a lot of weight, so the doctor had us give him 2 oz. of formula (an ounce at a time, several hours apart) to get his weight up while we waited for my milk to come in. By a week old, he was back to his birth weight and by nine weeks old, he'd doubled his birth weight, so obviously he figured out the whole eating thing. It just took him a while. It was scary, though, and I felt like such a horrible mom when I'd look at the scale and see that he'd lost even more weight

Yeah, I supplemented with formula a little bit in the hospital, and it didn't destroy our breastfeeding relationship either... so it's not the end of the world. I did pump after every feeding while in the hospital, and I believe it helped my milk to come in, but I was a cold c-section (no labor), so milk was a little slow. She was more then a pound over her birth weight by 3 weeks, and today at 3 months she has more then doubled her birth weight of 8lbs 1oz. We're in 9 month clothes and size 3 diapers. Girl has no trouble breastfeeding now!

I havent read all the responses yet so this may be redundant but....falling asleep during eating is a common problem with preemies. It was one of Isaac's biggest setbacks on coming home, eating. We would frequently stop during feeding (with a bottle) and burping, and sometimes tossel him, rub his feet, etc. to wake him back up. Also, we were told not to hold him comfortably when feeding him. Granted this was with a bottle but we did not hold him in the crook of our arm as he WOULD go to sleep. We held him out, sitting up, in front of us. Maybe she could do the same and try different nursing positions. Also, we DID NOT rock while feeding, nothing put him to sleep faster. We were encouraged to talk to him while he was eating to try to keep him awake. Of course we never tried the cool cloth because we were also working on keeping body temp up, but I've heard it works.
