Hello Ladies! Well, I'm "officially" a member here I guess. LOL

Audrey's done really well with nursing! She latches fairly easily. The only problems we've had are 1) she wants to nurse just on the nipple; and 2) she chomps really hard at first and then starts sucking after several very painful chomps. I've almost fixed the nipple sucking (just relatching) but need help with what to do about the chomping. One nipple is cracked a little and bleeds just a tiny bit.

I've found that when mine do that I gently push down on their little chins to open their mouths wide enough to put my whole nipple in there...then they get used to having a proper suck.

I hope you're using loads of lanolin my friend.

Tammy ... you named yours Audrey too?? YAY!!!

I remember her latching just on the nipple. Those were rough days.

Yeah, Christine...we did! I honestly had forgotten you named your dear one Audrey. Hope you don't mind!! Her middle name is Elizabeth.

I think we're doing better. She seems to be better with having more in her mouth and I'm doing better with recognizing when she's slipped to just the nipple. It's the chomping we still need help on. Although, I must be toughening up a bit since it's not hurting like it did. I think she's just doing it until I let down.

Thanks Ladies!

Quick question.......I have heard of people putting a smidge of baby cereal in formula to make it more filling. Has anyone ever done that with breast milk?

We did it from 2 months on BUT that was due to acid reflux issues. If he had been on formula we'd have forked out the extra money for the special stuff instead but I was pumping exclusively at that point. I only did it because of the reflux and I don't think I would do it again even if our new one has it as well. I would never do it to try and fill them up!

Ditto. I wouldn't even do it with a severe reflux baby(which I had).

My MIL put cereal into my husband's formula bottle at 1 month old to get him to sleep through the night. It worked, but it was still a terrible thing to do to him.

I shouldn't have. It was an attempt to get him off Zantac. A misguided one. But I am a bit more feisty this time around and not as umm, open to suggestion. The ped did suggest it (not excusing - it was my call and I should have said no) and I figured it can't hurt and would be better than meds 2x a day. Not his ped by the way, the one we got stuck with for a sick call. She was very nice but old school. She retired earlier this year I believe - haven't seen her since Josh was 2 months old.

Yeah, Zantac was kind of a pain(and nasty tasting) but it did the trick. The most frustrating thing with it for me was how weight sensitive the dosing was and how often it needed to be changed.

definitely do NOT give a baby cereal or solids before 3 to 4 months (at least...personally...I wait longer...until they show a real interest in food or at least 6 months....)

As much as you want sleep.....giving them food they are not really ready to digest is NOT going to help them in the long run.

I don't think the idea is that every single baby will be harmed by it. But that it is risky and can cause real digestive issues for babies and possibly kick start allergy problems.

There are other ways to help a baby sleep. This one tips the scales as too risky for most.

Yes.

It won't kill a baby....but it really is not worth it..and can backfire and cause stomach upset that keeps them awake MORE.

One thing you can try, especially if nursing, is, instead of feeding a set number of minutes per breast...let them totally empty out a breast....they get more of the hind milk that way..and will often keep them satisfied a little bit longer. Just make sure that at the next feeding...you do the other breast. It really is not necessary to do both breasts at each feeding....even at first.

I always just nursed on one breast until he got fussy/unsatisfied then pushed away. Then I'd offer the other, though the usually didnt take any if much from it. I just made sure to start with the other breast the next time.
Now he chooses which side he wants!

AND to add to that, I have a child that is allergic to something because it was given to her too early (not by us, which is another topic of discontent of ours!). It is very real that giving something to a baby before their system is ready for it can cause them to be allergic to it for year or the rest of their lives. ESPECIALLY when you consider how often rice or wheat allergies come up with little ones.

yep...because their immune systems cannot yet tell what are germs and what are not germs...and the immune system will turn and and attack just about anything.

Well, this morning was our first attempt at supplementing with formula. I had milk in the girls...all ready for Derrek. But, the stubborne little man decided he was only going to eat from a bottle. After a 3 hour stand-off....I gave in and gave him some formula. He took it with no problem. But, as of this afternoon, he still has no interest at all in the breast. Loves the breast milk, just not directly from the source.

So, I'll keep pumping until I run dry and slowly move over to all formula as that happens. I'm a bit upset and frustrated, but I guess either way I'll have a healthy kid and he will have gotten some of the good stuff from the breast milk he has had so far.

do your best, that's all you can do.
Sharon,
I have 5 kids. All have had breast milk, some more, some less. One was formula fed from 5mo. You can't tell the difference, really.
You are good Momma.

Christine, coming in a bit late but look at up Dr. Jack Newman and his site. I'd post it but it has some breasts front and center on the page :D

He has GREAT tips with videos on hand pumping and helping your pumping. One thing that helped me was to pump and when it slowed but I knew there was more.. stand up, bend at waist and shake your milk makers a little.

Sharon, could it be possible that he is tongue-tied? I know with Matthew I wanted to BF with him, but he was TT and it hurt him to nurse, and my doctor didnt clip it until he was almost 2, but it caused Matthew not to want the breast.

((((Sharon)))) You're doing a great job!! I had to supplement with Josie and she's still healthy (as a matter of fact, she's a LOT less sick than my SIL's babies, who are exclusively breast fed).

Brandy, that's a great tip...I'll have to try that if I ever have to pump again (which I hope I NEVER have to do!!!).
