Quick question.... ...I know that through the breastmilk, babies eat what mommy eats. With that in mind, I plan to start back to a work out routine tomorrow and would like to also add back protein shakes. My husband bought some powder that is a combo of protein from milk and soy. It does not have a lot of other "stuff" in it like some other powders do. Do you think having a protein shake is safe for baby? Has anyone else used them while breastfeeding? What kind did you use?

ORIGINAL: sharonjef2007 With that in mind, I plan to start back to a work out routine tomorrow Sharon, what kind of work-out routine? Has your doctor approved it? Because it's REALLY early to be considering this after having a C-section (it's usual to wait *at least* until your six week check. Your abdominal wall has been cut and the muscles have been sewn back together. You really do need to be very careful). If you want, we can talk about this in the Post Partum thread.

Yep, I am cleared for everything EXCEPT abdominal wall exercises. I'm not planning to jump back to what I was doing before I was pregnant, but I want to start gradually with cardio and strength training. But really, I'm interested in hearing about the protein powders and its effect on breastfeeding.

Soy is a common allergen, so if it was me I'd be concerned about that. Is the milk part of the shake whey protein or something else?

It should be fine, Sharon. I took them while nursing, it didn't have any detrimental effect on my milk. It shouldn't, really.

When I was breastfeeding my ds, lots of things seemed to affect my milk. I guess it perhaps just varies from person to person, even from baby to baby.

Sharon, I think that if it is the straight protein/whey powder it is ok. I'd stay away from any mega formulations (even if just protein) and anything with "stuff" added to it. Personally my preference would be to make smoothies with a lot of plain greek yogurt and some fruit. That stuff has a pretty high protein content and stay away from the powders altogether though. Have you checked the box? Mark has some that specifically says it is not for pregnant/nursing women. This is the first place I have ever heard of rice allergies. I know 3 children IRL who have severe food allergies and/or intolerances. Two are siblings who together are allergic/intolerant of over 15 foods (including seeds, spices, oils, dairy, wheat, corn, soy). The third doesn't process dairy normally and is gluten intolerant too. All 3 can eat rice and have been encouraged to do so by their specialists. Kris

A normal whey protein powder should effect things anymore then drinking milk does, in theory anyway. Soy is no more risky then whey, so if you aren't avoiding one I wouldn't bother avoiding the other, kwim? Really though, you can get enough protein without a shake. It just requires eating a couple eggs or a bit more chicken breast.

Do you nurse from both sides each time or just one? Is she sleeping, or just sucking lazy while awake?

Donna, I nurse from both sides. One day I tried nursing from only one side for 20-25 minutes each time but was miserable...then the LC told me I should have pumped the other side afterwards to avoid that. I may try that again. Something else she's doing is after the fast flowing milk is gone, she pops off several times during the next 5-8 minutes. Sometimes when I try to latch her back on, she won't latch and she'll even fuss some. I know I've breastfed before but it was a TOTALLY different situation so I feel like a newbie!! I guess I thought once they were latched, that was it for the nursing session. But Audrey has to be relatched several times. I'm honestly not sure if she's falling asleep or just lazily sucking...probably just lazily sucking.

How old is the little lady again? If you're not going to follow up with formula I'd be checking her weight very carefully.

Well, Audrey lost two ounces in one week so the doctor told me to nurse and then top her off with an ounce or two of formula. I decided to pump for 10 minutes after each nursing session and give that to her and then give some formula. Sounds very reasonable to me. If you don't want to introduce a bottle then maybe using a syringe or SNS would work better? Or is there a lactation clinic with a milk scale where you can weight her before and after feeding to see how much she is eating? Having had a FTT infant I have no issues with supplementing as needed. One secret though, try and feed her in the waiting room before you go back for the weight check

ORIGINAL: Tea-Tea While 2 ounces isn't a big loss, when you consider she should have gained several ounces in a week but lost 2, that's a pretty big deal in my eyes. Well, I know this is the breast feeding "support" thread, but I agree with you. That would worry me, too, and I completely understand why would supplement. Just remember you are NOT a failure. A lot of this really isn't under your control. It's not your fault, and whatever breast milk you can give her is a big deal. Breastfeeding is not even close to being some sure-fire way of producing a happy, healthy child.

Did she grow any in that week (length-wise)? Just wondering cause the Dr freaked out when my son was still 2 oz under birth weight at 2-weeks old but then she measured him and he had grown over 1 1/2". Is it possible any/all the food she was getting went to length rather than weight that week? If you can hand-express more; could you just put an empty bottle under to catch that? That worked quite often when a friend and I were nursing.

ORIGINAL: Tea-Tea I don't think it's a supply problem because I can hand express more milk after she's nursed and I *think* I still feel like there's milk in my breasts. However, I can't seem to pump much (usually just a teaspoon total) after nursing...but I can still hand express some milk. *sigh* My SIL can feed her baby and then pump 8 ounces. Maybe it's just me, but I never had good luck pumping right after a feeding. It seemed like once I had letdown during the feeding, it just wasn't gonna happen again for a pumping. So, I would usually take a break and then come back a little later and try again. It still never worked great for me. Not that this information will help you with your situation and needing to top Audrey off, but I wasn't ever able to pump much after a feeding either. ~~~ Lydia has not nursed for almost 4 days. We have been slowly weaning since her birthday. A few days ago, with her sleep schedule and my work schedule, it ended up being 24 hours since she had nursed. So, I went with it. She hasn't asked for it, and somewhat to my surprise, I'm doing fine with it. Emotionally anyway...the physical discomfort I could do without.

Well, there have been a few feedings where I haven't topped her off because she seemed to eat really well at the breast and then promptly fell asleep (like this morning, for instance). I've decided to call today to make an appointment to see the breastfeeding doctor (it's about 1 1/2 hours away but well worth it!). I have so many questions and I know she could help me work through some things. I'm pretty sure I can't see her this week but perhaps next week. We'll see!

Tammy, I would think that 2 oz was pretty big, too. My youngest had problems with weight, too. One of the things that I tried to do was to hold her as much as possible, so that if she was hungry, I could feed her right then. I also did some other things (that were not necessarily things that the LC or dr would have recommended). What does her feeding 'schedule' look like? (not that you have her on a schedule, just her own times that she eats) -- just wondering how often and much she eats and whatnot...

Sorry...I posted in haste yesterday and didn't thank you ladies who've responded. I really appreciate your thoughts!! Ryanne, I don't hand express while pumping because I tend to pop my breast out of the cup when I do. I must not be doing something right! Purejoy, I'll try waiting a little while before pumping...thanks for the input! Betterisoneday, I didn't even think of her growing length-wise! I think if we have anymore issues, I'll insist they measure her length. Thanks! Sarah, what you're saying (about plateauing and then growing at 3 weeks) makes sense in this situation. And I agree...I think it's a hindmilk issue. A lot of times I'll change her diaper after nursing one side and before goingn to the other...that seems to wake her up a bit. Myka, she pretty much eats every 3 hours. However, before I started supplimenting (and once since), she would cluster feed in the evenings (eating about 2-3 times in 2-3 hours). At night she sleeps about 4 hours (I feed around 9:30 or 10:30), then she's up for another feeding, then sleeps 2-4 more hours. Since she's a super laid-back baby, when she's fussy it pretty much means she's hungry so I feed her. Sometimes when I feed her when it's only been an hour or two, she will only nurse on one side and then falls fast asleep (I can't seem to wake her enough to nurse the other side). I'm going this afternoon to the breastfeeding doctor. I feel like she can help me work through some things. I really wish I had thought about it last Thursday and tried to get in with her on Friday. *sigh* My mom and Josie are going with me. It's 1 1/2 hours away. I'll post an update tomorrow.
