I don't think there is a normal. I was pumping after every feeding, starting about 30 minutes after she was done eating and would get very little. Granted, I had serious supply issues but I know women who can breastfeed for 18 months without supplementing and can't pump a drop.

For occasional pumping the Avent Isis worked well for me. It depends on how much you want to spend. The Avent Isis is a manual pump. I never was concerned with the baby being willing to take a bottle; if an issue arose where baby needed to take a bottle I figured it would be worked out when the time came. Dee

A few weeks back I wrote that breastfeeding was causing such a drop in estrogen for me that intimacy was painful. Well, I can report that the estrogen cream and special lubricant the doctor recommended has helped a lot, so that it no longer hurts. It's not pleasurable either, but at least it's not painful. This might get me into trouble but for me, breastfeeding and sex actually have something in common. I'm using my physical body to serve the needs of someone I love. Maybe that's not romantic but I don't think romance is all lingerie and chocolate roses. Serving someone with all that you have, down to your very body, is love, I think.

It's been like that to a degree here to, Ruth. Birth control, much like breastfeeding, totally kills my sex drive. The pill I'm on now is worse then any of the others I have used in the past. I'm glad the cream worked for you.

I agree too, Ruth. For one, breastfeeding and sex are closely related, IMO/E. That does sound weird to say, but they do both affect each other. And sometimes, both can be ways of serving those we love, even though we might not feel like it. So...yeah...makes sense to me. On a more bfing only note...I squirted Esther in the eye today on accident and it made her furious! LOL She is so distractable lately and will get the milk flowing and then unlatch and look around while it just runs and runs. So trying to get her latched back on, I sprayed her. I think it made her even more mad when I laughed. I swear she has baby ADHD though...she only nurses well when it is silent and dark now, which in this house pretty much never happens.

If you and hubby aren't bothered by the bleeding then I don't see why you couldn't have sex... We only waited 3 weeks.

ORIGINAL: thisistheday For occasional pumping the Avent Isis worked well for me. The Avent Isis is a manual pump. I never was concerned with the baby being willing to take a bottle; if an issue arose where baby needed to take a bottle I figured it would be worked out when the time came. I think along the same lines as Dee (and also Brandy). I bought an Avent Isis (manual) and it worked out just fine. THAT BEING SAID, I never pumped at all until the baby was 9.5 weeks old (to make sure my supply was strong). My son is currently 14.5 months old, still nursing, and I bet he's only had 10 bottles ever. The longest I have been away from him is for 5 hours ONE TIME when we went to a wedding reception and he did get a bottle for that (he was 7.5 months old then, I think that was his last bottle ever and he was feeding every 3 hours then). Agreeing with Brandy in that your husband will bond wonderfully with baby just by holding the little one. I am so glad that so many women posted here before I had my son. I learned so much about things but one thing that I really learned and have seen come true more than one time is that pumping can mess with your supply so if you don't HAVE TO, maybe DON'T. At least not for a while till your supply is established. (I always read 6 weeks here but I waited 9.5 just to be on the safe side.) My sister-in-law works outside the home several days a week so she pumps. I have seen her "lift weights" prior to pumping (using a soup can while at the in-laws' house) and then putting cold compresses on herself afterward. I'm not sure how all that factors in but I know KatMack, SweetLittleErin and some others here have been very dedicated and successful pumpers for work reasons and can probably shed way more light than I can. It's nice to see you posting here, Sharon. Jeanie

Christine, I would be tempted to start more around 10 weeks JUST IN CASE you need to work to bring your supply up to match the demand of both baby and pump. If you try for a week and need help you can start milk increasers and still have 2 weeks+ to get some milk to supply daycare with. I would be worried that with only 2 weeks you won't have enough time to get things working smooth enough to build up some for daycare.

Usually they say about 5 days, IIRC. (it's been awhile since I stored breastmilk, lol)

Different people say different things on how long breast milk will stay good in the refrigerator. 5 days is the least amount of time that I've found, so that's what we go by. Christine-- something to think about... Malcolm hated a bottle so much at first, that he would scream for litterally hours while a bottle (or two... or three) would go bad. It also took a few weeks to figure out how much milk to put into each bottle so he didn't finish it and still want more, or so he didn't leave an ounce and a half in the bottom of every bottle. My point is, you will probably need to pump a lot more milk than you would feed your baby directly, at least for the first few weeks. Even now, Mondays are hard on Malcolm and he'll sometimes let a bottle go bad or not eat well with my husband, and then nurse like crazy when I get home. He usually goes through an extra bottle on Mondays, even though he probably eats less those days. We also had a time when we forgot to take the milk out of my bag and put it in the refrigerator at night. I got up in the morning and realized that we had four warm bottles of milk in the bag and no bottles for Malcolm to drink It was also sooo sad to pour four bottles down the drain, after all that work!

Any tips for latching when I'm engorged? Poor girl is having a hard time getting ahold of the nipple because the breast is so hard. I forget what I should do.
