"The Steel Remains" by Richard K. Morgan.
I had previously read all of his other books, and found them to be top notch science fiction. They all dealt in some way with dark twists in humanity's future, whether in the corporate setting or genetic manipulation, highlighting society's tendency towards self destruction and the good / bad sides of human nature.
This latest novel from him, however, is an entirely different story. Literally.
In "The Steel Remains", Morgan goes the route of a middle ages type fantasy setting. Right off the bat we are introduced to the main character, who we are vaguely introduced as a heroic warrior from some past war or conflict. Oh, and by the way, he is not only gay, but prefers younger teenage boys.
Wait - it gets better...
Apparently it seems that nearly every character introduced into the story is some kind of sexual deviant, with preferences that range from young girls and boys all the way to torture rape fetishes (that one was a shaman priest).
Now, ... I am a very tolerant person. There is a lot that I can stand when it comes to movies, books and art. But there are some things I just don't think need to be put into a story. And believe me, you don't want to know about the things that eventually made me stop reading the book (worse than what I have already listed above). Not to mention the fact that I got over 160 pages into it, and I still had no idea of where the story was going, other than I was probably going to find another kind of perversion on the next page.
Bottom line, you can read anything else written by Richard K. Morgan, as they are terrific novels. But "The Steel Remains"? I don't know what he was thinking. Don't even pick it up. It is a waste of paper and library shelf space.

The Tommyknockers, by Stephen King. I'm a huge King fan, but this one bored me to tears. Took 1,000 pages to tell a 500 page story.
Anything else by him, though, I'd say go for it. ...Well, there's still five or six books of his I haven't read, so I can't say anything, but so far I've enjoyed them all.

So true Mr. Fribbles. I think he refers to those as those as his 'just living through alcoholism' novels. Cujo is another one.
There are probably a lot of novels I would not recommend. Some I like but I don't think they're for everyone. The trouble is remembering what they are and being fair to novels I never finished.

THEN WHY DID YOU TELL ME TO COME AND SEE THE FIREWORKS??? Or in other words, why did you write a book you didn't intend to have an ending???

That's the best part! It still leaves you wanting. 
I would have to say the Eragon series....BIG yawn.

I wouldnt recommend Jane Green's books, i picked them up just for some light beach reading but shes just a bad writer and its really hard to get invested in the characters...

A Year by the Sea by Joan Anderson
Smug non-fiction about a woman separating from her husband of 30 years to 'find herself.' Frankly, I could deal with that if what she found wasn't so boring and shallow. I didn't feel for her much and it was excruciating to read each little detail of her new life as if it should matter to me.
The things you read to be in a book club.

Sammy_S - Obviously you do not like books written by ministers. Have you read any of their books or just making an overall judgment?
What about Charles Stanley? Anne Graham Lotz? Billy Graham? If you haven't read their books, you are missing some great reading, IMO.

No Gail, those authors he mentioned are advocating flipped out theology which is running rampant in these church these days and passed as gospel. People like Greg Laurie, Anne Graham Lotz and Billy Graham is bibically based and they are good authors.
I'm sure he is endorcing those writers instead of those authors and others who are promoting whacked out theology.

and I agree about not recommending anything from Joel and Victoria Osteen.
I'm still on the fence about Rob Bell and the emergent guys. I read Blue Like Jazz and I actually liked it.
John Eldredge's books are weak in theology. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone though most of his books are in my library because I actually understand him.

Heh. I read The Late Great Planet Earth. I was in 9th grade.
Maybe that's why I avoided Left Behind?
